I am pretty actively involved in musical theater and have an audition coming up soon! For my audition, I need 2 sing a song, but the problem is, I am having trouble finding a good song 4 my voice. Does any1 have any song suggestions for an alto girl? (Broadway or Disney songs are preferred most by the directors, but I'm willing 4 other suggestions 2!) Thanks all!!
andrealovesjazz answered Friday December 10 2004, 11:50 pm: If you are auditioning for a musical, try to stay away from Disney songs. They are often overdone and are not in the Broadway style directors want. Try some low belty songs like "Aquarius" from the musical Hair and "Money, Money, Money" from the musical Mama Mia! with songs by ABBA. UWishUHadMyHemi answered Saturday October 16 2004, 3:48 pm: As a fellow alto, I know how hard it is to find a good song, especially solos! Most alto songs are harmony in a duet with soprano. Try "When your good to Mama" from Chicago, or "The Worst Thing I Could Do" from Grease. These have some higher notes, but not to high. With a little practice, an alto could easily sing these notes. Have fun and goodluck! [ UWishUHadMyHemi's advice column | Ask UWishUHadMyHemi A Question ]

It's a good song because it can really be sang in anny key.
I can sing it in most keys (I play the piano so I can alter it)
Firefly answered Sunday September 19 2004, 8:00 pm: Ohhhh, get something from Wicked. Definately. Wicked has the most fantastic music ever. If you think that might be too hard for you, though, go for a song from the Cinderella musical. Like "Ten Minutes ago" or something simple like that. Siren_Cytherea answered Thursday August 5 2004, 1:21 am: If you're looking for broadway songs...
"On My Own" from Les Mis is great for an alto. Eponine sings it, if that means anything.
Also, I reccomend "I Dreamed a Dream" Fantine sings that.
That musical has a lot of good songs for altos.
Let's see...Hmm...Jekyll and Hyde - I reccomend "A new life" or whatever it's called...If you're actively involved, you probably know what I'm talking about. Lol
You could probably get away with singing something from Rent, too, if you want something with a more rock feel.
Get a musical theater anthology - anywhere they sell music, they should sell that kind of thing.
I hope this helped - good luck with your audition!

xHeartxOfxGoldx answered Thursday August 5 2004, 1:14 am: Hey Im an Alto singer too. :).. and in the coming year or so I know that i will have many new auditions.. I say Choose a song that you are comfortable with and that shows off your personality and voice at its best. Most directors prefer that you not sing a song from the show you are auditioning for, but are happy to hear you sing a song that is similar in tone or style to the show. Any song will do, and many first-time auditioners choose something like "Happy Birthday" or "Take Me Out to the Ball game." Practice your song as if you were singing it on stage. Sing your song in a loud, on pitch voice with good articulation Make sure that if your singing a song that you choose one that stays in your range... the worst thing is cracking in your voice at an audition. Some good songs that I can suggest are basically country songs.. because they show alot of range...some of the artists that you can check out are
Celine Dion
Faith Hill
Reba McIntyre
Shania Twain
Jewel etc.
SammyPie answered Thursday August 5 2004, 12:51 am: I have been active in musical theatre for quite a long time. And picking a song to sing for an audition is always the hardest part of pre-audition prep. However you can do one of two things:
1. A lot of directors like to hear their auditionees sing a song from the production that is going up. It gives them a more outright view of their choices for leads and whatever.
2. You can choose a song that is similar to the music that is in the show that you are auditioning for.
Since I do not know what show you are doing.. I can't give you a name for a song yet. Leave me a message and I will get back to you with it... If not, then break a leg at your auditions. [ SammyPie's advice column | Ask SammyPie A Question ]
