hey, guitars are definetly NOT just for boys!!i'm a girl and i play guitar. do you know any girls who play the guitar? point them out to your mom, and you maybe can use famous people too. if she lets you, practice and work hard so she knows she's not wasting her time or money.
Good luck!!

Tell your mom that you'd really appreciate it if she supported you playing guitar. Tell her even though you want to play the guitar it doesn't mean you'll be a boy. Tell her lots a girld that are famous play the guitar and give her examples. Tell her that if she loved you she would appreciate what you want to do and tell her to do it in respect!

i play guitar. my mom was a little shocked when i told her i wanted to play, but after i told her how bad i wanted to do this and how much i would practice and how it would be worth it, she let me. so just make sure your mom understands how you feel about playing guitar

MFS answered Monday July 12 2004, 4:13 pm:
That isn't quite right, is it? The guitar is not a man's plaything. Music is music, regardless of the instrument - there are no barriers that way you cannot play guitar:

Look at Joni Mitchell and Judy Collins from the late 60s... look at Nancy Wilson of Heart who still plays like a bad-ass... look at Lita Ford of the 80s hair band craze... look at the Bangles, the Go-Gos, the Runaways, the Pretenders, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Vixen... there's a long, long list, and they come from many eras and generations... women CAN and DO play guitar.

Dig through music your mom listens to and find bands with women playing guitars... I bet you'll find several... possibly one's I listed here.

Beyond all that, inform you mother that the guitar is a wonderful instrument to learn, a great tool for song writing, and an even better medium to learn to express yourself.

Good Luck!

Try showing her bands thats girls play the guitar in and tell her to watch Freaky Friday (The new one with Lindsey Lohan .. she plays the guitar). Just try talking to her one more time saying that its different these days that girls and boys play the guitar and you really want to play it. Just tell her why you want to and tell her you're in a band and you have to have an instrument in order to actually play in the band lol. Good luck!!!

I'm a girl, but since both my parents know guitar, they taught me. Which isn't helpful at all, really. Just tell her that times are changing and you'd like to take a few lessons to see if you like it
...and sit down to watch Freaky Friday with her XD.
<3 that guitar bit.

Guitars aren't only for boys. Your mother must be a little old fashioned. Try to raise the money yourself to get lessons. Get lessons before you actually buy a guitar though. Try to do this one thing by yourself so she will think that it gave you a little self confidence to do better.
