Not today could mean wrong time to ask, or he's not interested, or he probably just had a upseting break up. Maybe the best thing to do is ask him what does it mean. Dont let it get to you.

I would think he doesn't really want to go out with you. Sometimes guys just feel uncomfortable when girls are too agressive, and then, he may just not feel the same way about you that you feel about him.
If he literally meant "not today," as in "maybe tomorrow," he would have said something, I think.

Maybe he wanted to ask you out or maybe he likes you but not ready to date.

Not today probably means just that, 'Not today.' Most guys really aren't into the whole "I'm going to use certain words so you'll have to listen carefully to my sentence so I can mess with your mind" sort of thing. Unlike us girls. ;)

It just means not today, so ask him out again. He didn't turn you down he just didn't tell you why he couldn't go so generally he was busy he weasn't pushing you aside. Ask him out again for a better time.

It means he's not really interested in you...because if he was he would say yes or if he really can't because his schedule doesn't permit him, he would set up another date where you two can go out. Let this be a lesson to you that you should wait for a guy to ask you out if you're not sure that he likes you.

It probably means he doesn't feel ready for a relationship.
How old is he? For that matter, how old are you? I wouldn't take it to much to heart, and I expect you are at the begining of your life so there will be plenty of other guys for you. Its not worth getting that upset over.
