Ok, I have been having this problem with my PC and it seems to be getting a bit worse.
From time to time my computer randomly shuts down. It seemed to be caused primarily by graphics and video applications (e.g. games). In recent days however, it managed to do it with nothing running but Windows. That’s when it really bothered since it can interfere with my work.
Now, the odd thing is, it doesn’t fully shut down. The monitor goes to sleep, and there is no response from keyboard/ mouse, but I can hear that part of it is still running. The fan is still on for example.
Oh and just before shutting down it makes a short, stuttered noise.
I went online to try to sort this out and people generally pointed towards overheating issues. I monitored the temperature and that does not seem to be the problem. I am even running it wihout a cabinet as someone advised, but its hard to find a pattern to the crashes.
Any input will be much appreciated :)
Oh, I run a 2200 Athlon PC with 1GB Ram and an Nvidia 6600 graphics card if this makes any difference at all…

Sadly, the symptoms you describe could be caused by just about anything. With this in mind I will tell you the TOP THREE things I have encountered over the years that caused the exact scenario you described:
Power supply failure. Everything seems fine, but as the voltage regulators slip further off the mark, things get progressively worse.
I have had this happen to me personally as well as client workstations.
There is a power supply tester you can acquire to check this out, but if you aren't in the habit of doing this, it would be just as well to go ahead and buy another power supply.

If you are planning on upgrading your system components beyond what you have, I would step up to one of the Antec power supplies they offer.
Second thing that has caused this specific error scenario: Corrupt swapfile (Virtual memory) or a failing hard drive.
The system will go to access the disk, and when it hits the magic bit that simply can't be read, the system did what you described.
Third thing: Something else modified a file your video drivers depend on for reliable operation.
Theymos already suggested that you remove and re-install the drivers. That is a good call, and should be the first thing tried, not the last thing.
Also worth a mention is an oddly corrupted registry file. I have only seen this cause your issue once, but I figured you should have the info in hand, just in case.
There are other possible culprits... many of them, in fact, but I would look first and foremost at the power supply.

my boy friend is living in louisiana right now with his family.. he cant work because he was born with a fatal heart condition but they keep denying disbaility to him. they are on food stamps. they just got a forclosure notice today from their laywer. are they going to be homeless? they cant really stay with family they all live out of the country, all his friends have families and are stuggeling anyways.. are there any organizations or anything to help? im scared he will be homeless and i cant get him home right now.. or anytime soon because my dad wont let him stay with me (even though im 18). so anything anybody is there anything they can do??? thanks so much (link)

There is so much that can be done, it is almost unbelievable.
The first thing I would do would be to get the SSI Disability business taken care of. If they denied him, there is a reason, and that reason is something that they are, as far as I am aware, required to tell you.
There is an appeal process for denied claims. He needs to use this. If he doesn't know how, he should get ahold of one of the MANY attorneys that specialize in SSI cases.
If his disability is medically verifiable, then there is NO reason he should have been denied.
As for help, I would call your local Salvation Army headquarters and see if they have someone that can help. Call the main office, not the thrift store places.
You would be surprised how helpful they can be.
Assisted (low income, section 8) housing is available to low income families. If he is on foodstamps, he almost certainly qualifies for this. The same office he gets his foodstamps from can point him in the right direction, if they can't help directly.
If they attend a local church, they should let them know that they are struggling and ask for whatever help they can give. Being a Christian was originally intended to be about helping people, so you may find a few real Christians there, you never know.
There may be a local food pantry which can help stretch their foodstamp budget into something they can really live on.
I wish you and them the absolute best, and hope to hear someday soon that all is on the upswing in every way.

Sometimes a question will have either no subject at all, or a single word subject which offers little insight into the question.
In case either of those are true, the system will create a synthetic subject from the first x characters of the question body.
Not the best system, but the only way I know of to automate that job.

Not a big name by any means, but for an existing Primus fan, you really should check FingersMoran.
Now, it is just two guys, brothers in fact, but the amount of funk they bring in a couple songs featuring a six-string bass would make George Clinton back up and say: "Damn!"

As with most people who create music of their own, well, as time goes by inspiration isn't what it once was. The two I feel best represent FingersMoran are: "Six Strings of Fury", and: "The Red Bull." Judge for yourself.
It also feels, to me, like the six-string stuff is FAR more inspired than the rest. I would be curious to know if you agree after you have taken time to ingest it all.
Oh, and that is another thing about FingersMoran's music: You have to listen all the way through each tune at least once. They frequently change from a tune that doesn't suit your taste to one that does.

Ok the computer has a total of 256MB of Ram which is standard now it has two sockets now what is the maximum that you can put on the computer can you get 1GB or can you only put 512MB. If you could please help me that would be great and where would the best place to buy it online. Thanks! (link)

The Toshiba Satellite 1415-S105 laptop computer can accept another 256MB module. That is it, from what I can find.

ok i drive a '97 mustang. the console in my car basically looks like this [[ http://www.yellowmustangregistry.com/reviews/husky/Before_Console.jpg ]] where the cd unit & radio are separate. i got the radio/cassette thingy taken out and a new in-dash CD deck put in it's spot at Best Buy, but they left the car's actual cd player in at the bottom. i want to get that taken out and just have a little compartment put in so i can put my phone or CDs or whatever in there. does anyone know around how much this would cost and where i could get it done at? Best Buy charged me over $75 to get my cd player installed so im kind of afraid to go back there ha. any ideas ? (link)

Any car audio shop should be able to do this. It is a very simple operation, an probably wouldn't have cost you a thing if you told the installer he could keep the factory CD player in question.
Now that that is done and over, I would simply call best buy and ask them why they didn't finish the job they started.
If you asked them to remove the factory sound system, then they only did half the job. A "half-DIN" (the size of that space) empt compartment would probably cost you between $15 and $25 plus installation if you went elsewhere.
I would show up and best buy, and tell them a guy you, know who used to own his own car audio business, wanted to know why they only did half the job?
If they say "why doesn't he do it?" tell them he now lives on the other side of the country.
This shouldn't be a big deal.
Side note: $75 for an install is not the least bit out of line if it was done professionally. I would have charged you twice that. ;-)

Hi DN, it is former xobrittxo. I know that you know what happened, and I just wanted to explain to you what went on. I am a triplet, and I have a sister Courtney who was Understatement of the year x3. I have another sister (the other 2/3) and she created the WoahThereBabe2 column. Courtney and I take this seriously (just look at our columns,) but she does not, and I am really really sad that I was penalized for it. I just wanted to know, how did we get connected if we have different emails? I mean, we do share a laptop, but it makes no sense. I am sorry for what she did too, and she feels bad about it also, I think it is more that she got our columns taken away. Is there anything I can do to get my column (and Courtneys) back? Some users have the ability to bump a neglected question up in time. Lately, we have discovered people who have a habit of deleting questions they really shouldn't, so we have been going back and making sure that they see the light of day.
