Primus

Question Posted Tuesday March 25 2008, 8:41 pm

Anyone know any bands similar to Primus? They don't have to be strange, just something with unique time signatures and strange changes in rhythm.

Unique time signatures and odd shifts in rhythm...

Not a big name by any means, but for an existing Primus fan, you really should check FingersMoran.

Now, it is just two guys, brothers in fact, but the amount of funk they bring in a couple songs featuring a six-string bass would make George Clinton back up and say: "Damn!"

Originally putting themselves out there on YouTube suggests to me that the best way to introduce you to them is the way I met them:

Now, if you consider this is a couple guys in PJs jamming on headphones in an apartment, it is amazing. Listen to it while minimized and you will be amazed at the sound without the visuals.

Another where they are practicing to play live is very interesting:

In some of these you want to watch for absolutely flawless use of a loop pedal.

I will let you find those yourself. :-)

Here is perhaps my favorite FingersMoran tune:

To see how well they play together, you really have to see them play live:

First show together... drummer's first ever:

They get better:

As with most people who create music of their own, well, as time goes by inspiration isn't what it once was. The two I feel best represent FingersMoran are: "Six Strings of Fury", and: "The Red Bull." Judge for yourself.

It also feels, to me, like the six-string stuff is FAR more inspired than the rest. I would be curious to know if you agree after you have taken time to ingest it all.

Oh, and that is another thing about FingersMoran's music: You have to listen all the way through each tune at least once. They frequently change from a tune that doesn't suit your taste to one that does.

Last bits of info:

The MySpace:

... which contains songs the the YouTube channel:

... does not, and vice versa.

There is also a website of their own:

If you feel like getting a higher quality version of any of the FingersMoran tunes they have been accepted by and are available on iTunes, among others.

Enjoy.

Hmmm... you want the weirdness, go with Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention. Ol' Frank was a frustrated classical composer, and a lot of his music has weird time signatures and odd rhythmical change-ups. Soundgarden also did some unusual time signatures: "Rusty Cage" is something like 16/7, and "Spoonman" is 7/4. Look to the early albums like Screaming Life, Ultramega OK and Badmotorfinger. Rush also has a lot of polyrhythmic stuff in their earlier catalogue ("YYZ" is a perfect example.)

Hope this helps.
