about

I have worked in nursing and/or healthcare management positions for 24 years. Primarily OB, Neonatal, Mental Health, Occupational Health and Geriatrics. In Jan 2008 I started my own business to board horses and do equine/human education. I am also a certified dog trainer.
I've been around the block so to speak and seem to be always helping others. I've been told that the reason people seek me out for advice is that I am approachable and caring. But on the same token even though I consider the person's feelings. I tell it like I see it. I've dealt with people in trouble with the law, dysfunctional families such as those with abuse & marriage problems. Not to mention problems with employees and employers.
I don't ever claim to know it all, and always keep an open mind.

I'm 19 years old, and have been dealing with depression since I was eight. I don't have insurance or anything, and I know that I need medication for it. So, can anyone tell me how much depression medication will be without insurance?
And how I can get insurance now that I'm at least 18 years of age. thank you.
If you are able to work full time, consider positions that have benefits that include a prescription plan. Then you will typically pay a co-pay on certain medications. The employer can give you a list of medications that are covered and you can take that to your physician. If you cannot work because of the 'depression' and/or your household income is limited you can speak with social services in your county and see what assistance is available for your particular situation. They are there to help, and everyone needs some kind of help from time to time, so don't feel bad asking.
Most pysicians understand that people have a difficult time paying for prescriptions and perhaps would work with you on this. There are now many kinds of medications for depression, the older drugs are likely to cost less. It will also depend on what type of depression you have, as there are several types--and due to several causes. So the cost would be too wide of a range for us on here to guess, anywhere from $30-$500.00 per month..huge difference.
Many drug companies offer a discount or assistance program for those with limited income or without insurance.
Here's a place to check that out:

i only get direct sun rays in my room between 7 & 8 AM. it's sort of sad because on weekdays, i'm at school at that time, and on weekends, i'm sleeping at that time.
so i was wondering. what could i do to make my room a little more bright? not necessarily in terms of lighting (trust me, i have three lamps in my room already). it also gets sort of awkward when it's 5 pm, still a little bit of sunlight that isn't going into my room, and i have all my lamps on.
any advice?
Try to position mirrors so the lamps will reflect in them..or even behind a lamp. A big mirror really lightens up the room and makes it look airy much like a window would do
Some girl that I know has had many fights with her boyfriend over some serious things. These thing include him not showing much love as he used to; lying that he was going to do something important mean while he was going to hangout with his friend/s; saying he didn't have a break at work so he wouldn't have to even call her on his break; and acting really busy so he wouldn't see her so much (which she wanted to see him a lot). They had several fights regarding what I just mentioned but for the past week or week and a half he seems to have been there for her a lot and not disappointed her. So...if there was to be another fight...in how long do think it'll happen? Or do you think it's either impossible to tell or by now there's proof that there might not be another fight between them?
Sounds like the girl might be smothering the boyfriend. He apparently doesn't want to hurt her, but also wants some space. If she can give him some breathing room, they might not fight as much..and maybe not for weeks! If she continues to worry about where he is and when he is going to call, I'd give it 24 hours before another fight breaks out.
Ok, so 15/f...
I get along with pretty much everyone in my class. But, there's this one girl who just goes out of her way to bother me =( It's like effecting my self esteem. I don't understand why she acts this way. Like, I'll just be sitting there and she'll say something funny so I'll laugh and next thing I know she's all like "Did I tell you you could laugh?!" Ugh I hate her. But I can't just ignore her because I feel so totally stupid and self-conscious because of the way she calls me out in front of everyone =(
Any advice?
Ohhh I wrote a long answer to this and my connection went down, so let's try again and I will shorten it up.
A girl like this will only understand sarcasm..she is the type that can dish it out and not take it. But if you continue to take her abuse she will continue to dish it out.
Come up with some coy and cunning comebacks..make a list of them and that way you will be prepared to say something that insults her right back. I'd only say one thing at a time, and just simply smile and turn away if she challenges you. She will look like more the fool that she is.
For example, If she says "Did I tell you I could laugh?" say "Well, whenever I look at your face the laughter just takes over" Or "Since when do I ever listen to what YOU tell me to do"..then end it with silence. It will make her really uncomfortable...and that's your goal.
Any tips for getting rid of that fishy smell that seems to stay on them FOREVER?
I've tried cleaning the rocks in a colander with some soap and hot water, but the smell is still there. I hate that whenever I change my fish's water, I can clean those rocks over and over, but they still smell!
HELP!
I would agree not to use chemicals like soap or anything with ammonia. I am guessing that so far you have rinsed them well enough not to harm the fish, but it's probably risky.
Of course you wouldn't be able to put them back right away, but after you rinse and drain all the water you can, if you spread the rocks out on several layers of newspaper and allow them to dry out in the sun for several hours. I bet this would help.
hi, l have a car thats every time it rains water keeps getting in and they are soaked what can l do or can l buy a machine to suck up the water any ideas. pauline
what a pain..I would agree that it would be best to fix the problem. If water is leaking in the windows you can buy a silicone sealer and try to fix that yourself. Otherwise yes, many shop-vacs can be used on wet or dry and they will suck up the water, or most carpet shampoo machines would, just use it without the solution.
my brother just got a cold and i really really dont want it, the cold has been airborn for about 3 days, and i dont think i have it yet. Is there any way to prevent me from catching it??
Thanks:)
While you may still catch his "cold" prevention is a good idea. Encourage him to cough or sneeze into a kleenex, then throw it away and wash his hands. You should also wash your hands often, and try to avoid touching your face, especially your eyes, nose and mouth. Most germs are transmitted this way. Also frequently spray areas where he spends a lot of time with Lysol, and the door knobs, faucet handles, toilet. Don't share towels and washclothes, and disenfect the computer keyboard, mouse, telephone and pens before you use them--or after he does. Also, one more thing, drink plenty of water, this will keep the respiratory passages moist and able to clear the germs better.
i keep getting bronchitis. i got it 3 times last year over a span of 6 months, and then this year ive already had it 3 times over a span of 4 months. is this something to be alarmed about and should i go to the doctor? will this cause me to get my tonsils out?
If your bronchitis always happens after a case of tonsilitis, then perhaps a surgeon may consider removing your tonsils, otherwise most likely not. It would be a good idea to see your doctor yes, because you may have something that is chronic going on that could be controlled with the right medication.
Hi i'm 17 years old and prom is in a few weeks and I heard that if you eat certain healthy foods it helps clear your skin so I was wondering what specific foods would help?
A healthy diet is good for the hair and skin, the best things to eat are a lot of fruits and vegetables, especially those higher in vitamin C.(like the citrus fruits-melons-brocolli) Also higher protien foods, like lean meat and fish. Stay away from caffine and sugar.
Also drink plenty of water to help flush those toxins out of your system.
Here's a good article:

I have this really big problem. My ex-best friend has this boyfriend who makes fun of me and threatened me yesterday. And she doesn't even care. So after he threatened me I was really shaky and I started feeling like I was going to throw up... so my step-dad picked me up from school. Anyway, I dont feel safe at school, so before I left school me and my step-dad went to the principal and vice principle and told them that i have been recieving threats. Even if he was kidding; 1.) you dont joke about that 2.) how could I tell if he was going to actually kill me or not? anyway back to the story. So now that I told on him everyone is against me. Please help
Hi,
The thing is, you are right you don't know what this boy will do, if he is serious nor not, or what he is capable of. So in the mean time the threats have to be taken seriously. You should not have to leave this school or change your routine to feel safe. That is just not right! Your stepdad did the right thing, however he needs to be persistant in getting the school to deal with this. There are several things you and your parents can do, one is of course to go to the police and/or request a meeting with the school board or go to the state board of education. If other students harrass you or retaliate against you for being so bold and 'telling' on the boy, then they should be dealt with too, and if not, you may have a legal case against the school. But what I would say to them is "Hey, this is my LIFE we are talking about, school violence happens all the time" "Open your eyes".
I wish you well....
My son is soon to be 16 months old. He is very intelligent, and understands most of everything I say. He knows 6 body parts, and can retrieve anything I ask of him..i.e coat, socks, shoes, cup, diaper etc. However, he did not babble much as a small baby, does not call us mom or dad (sometimes says it but doesnt seem to be directed towards us). He does not try to answer questions with words and communicates by grunting and pointing. He sort of says "kitty" (zizzy) and his word for truck is the sound it makes. that is the extent of his vocab. all other children his age I see are saying at least a few words and try to talk. I have read that he could have a speech disability because he is not talking yet..but some people say he is just a late talker. I am very worried.
Hi, I know this is an old question, but I just had to respond. Have you had his ears checked? My niece was the very same way..but little did we know she was picking up on non-verbal cues so well, it seemed like she heard everything. It turned out that she had fluid behind her eardrum, had tubes put in her ears, and almost immediatly she starting talking a lot! If you've already considered that and had his ears checked, I'd say that there is nothing to worry about at this stage. He may just be focusing on other skills first. It makes it difficult for us parents when we compare our own to other children and they all don't do things at the same age.
Is it common for your period to be late after having sex??
It was protected and there were definately no holes in the condom afterwards, i checked. But my period is still late.
Im not worrying like "OMG OMG AM I PREGNANT AM I PREGNANT?" Im simply just enquiring :)
Common no, can it happen? Yes. Worrying about it may not help. The best thing to do is take a home pregnancy test, and if it is negative I bet you will start in a day or two.
ok so my little 4 month old puppy has worms i dont have enough money to take her to a vet...im 16 i told my rents but there not doing anything about it.. and everynight like she sleeps with me and i wake up and on my bed were like.. little things that looked like red rice??? what are those they wernt moving and they dont look like worms but i know there coming from her what are they?
When pets have tapeworm, the segments are passed and they do look like rice, but are usually white. However once dry they could be darker. I so not think hookworm larva can be seen with the human eye, but hookworms do suck blood from the intestines, so they might be red. If it is a parasite and it's not moving, that is because it didn't locate a new host and died off.
Humans can be infected from animals though. As a rule all puppies have worms. You can buy over the counter dewormer which is better than nothing, but I have never had much luck with it. The vet could tell by a stool sample what this is exactly. Hopefully your parents will change their minds.
My uncle got 200 hundred ducklings, and 30 died in like 3 days!
We have heat, insulation, food, water, and other crap.
Does anyone have advice on having the ducklings live????
we have five things to hold the ducks, they are organized by type of duck and age of duck.
PLEASE HELP!!!
I have ducklings now too, so I have researched this a bit.
http://www.howtodothings.com/pets-and-animals/a3229-how-to-care-for-and-feed-baby-ducks.html
I am wondering if any were ill before your uncle got them? If you are doing everything right, that could be a possiblity. It seems with every clutch that hatches a few will die. I guess it's survival of the fittest. Are the ducks in big containers? Maybe they trample each other, chicks do that, not sure if ducks will, but they might.

i have known this girl since elementary school, and we have been "best friends" (i've had other best friends in between until i realized it's pointless to have just ONE best friend).
i've never really had many classes with her throughout middle school, but this year, my freshman year of high school, she's in virtually all my classes.
now at first, we were both elated! we finally got to see each other more often.
but that soon turned around. by december, i knew that i was ready to burst. it hit me. she was absolutely perfect. but the ONE little tiny thing that just made me scream and caused nights of crying myself to sleep was the fact that: every. single. grade. in every. single. one of our mutual classes. she ALWAYS gets the same or (more often) BETTER grade than me on EVERYTHING. homework, tests, quizzes, projects, you name it. and it made me want to vomit. i tried SO HARD. i even bought a new desk to get myself motivated enough to do my homework and really really study.
no one has any idea i feel this way about her. i hate her more than anyone on the face of the planet, pretending to be her best friend. everytime i look at her i just want to slap her. that's all. just give her one hard slap and give her brain cells a little ride so she'll stop getting less than 110% on EVERYTHING.
and what makes it worse? besides the fact that she's always trying to ask me what's wrong and comfort me when she's the problem, after several tests we've taken, she's CONVINCED. like ABSOLUTELY FUCKING CONVINCED. that she failed. and like usually i HATE being like, "oh that wasn't so bad" cause i don't get a 100. but she was CONVINCED. we both get our tests back the day after, and she got an A and i got a B. and i was BEYOND irate.
i'm naturally an extremely jealous person, but she is in 203849023 clubs and she's always saying how she never has anytime to do anything yet she finds the time to do better than ME and i barely do one club.
someone has to help me. i'm seriously losing it. i try so HARD on everything and she reads a packet once and gets a 100 and i read it 20 times, highlight, and outline and get a 95. she's ALWAYS better than me. and i severely need advice on how the hell do deal with this situation. and it's not like i can just go upto her and be like, "dude, i hate you. you're too perfect." and i've TRIED studying WITH her but it makes me want to puke being near her. i tried, i tried. it does no good. i try to get away from her as much as possible and not talk to her but it's hard. it's not that she's a really nosy person, she actually cares about me. it's not that she's a bad person either, i just want to look at my report card and be proud. and i can't. i want to cry.
in conclusion, help me stop being so jealous of this girl's grades and / or life to the point of violent thoughts taking over my brain.
It might help to think of it this way. Your friend/classmate sounds like a perfectionist. She is actually harder on herself than you are on her--I mean sweating it out thinking that she failed when she never does. She has no self confidence.
Don't sweat it that you are not like her, everyone and I mean everyone has some kind of talent and something that they are good at. If you try the hardest you can and do the best you can that is reason enough to be proud. Think of all the people with a sucky attitude that don't even try!
If you can, try to switch modes until it becomes a habit. Congratulate her on a job well done, build her up, all that positive energy will return to you. Karma..it has a strange way of working. You will then soon find something that you can do better than her.
While good grades are nice, there are plenty of average people in this world that become very successful!
I am going to give you kudos for caring about your grades...that says a lot, but don't ruin friendships over it.
.........
Note: Left after feedback: Wow! Actually if you read my answer, it does give you tips to not be jealous. Change your approach and it will become habit. When someone is bitter and hateful it will be more difficult, but you can change! the "get a grip" was probably better advice. Have a good day!
Ok, So I've been crushing on this boy for about a year now. We got pretty close as friends, and he's very religious and all cause his dads a preacher. But I'm not really that religious, I don't care what religion anyone is, that's their choice. But to the point; I finally asked him out this one Tuesday, he told me that he'd get back to me and such, so I waited. Then he finally tells me no that Friday. The next Tuesday that he's moving away. Later I asked him if he would if he didn't have to move away, and he said probably yes. He keeps acting like he likes me and when I ask for a hug he'll give me one. He's extremely kind and I can't help but want to hang around with him as much as possible; which I do. I don't know what to do, I keep falling more and more in love with him. I think I should tell him, but I'm really not sure at all...and I really really really want to go out with him, so I don't know if I should push that issue...I mean, if I did he might say yes. And he's only moving a hour away from my place, but...I can't drive for about 2 more years. And he's only a month and two days older then me..so he's in the same boat. But I'd get to see him 1 time each year till then at least...I don't know what to do...I really want to be his girlfriend and I don't want to lose him because he's became my entire world..I'm so lost and confused..please help, I'm running out of time...I have 2 more months with him.... ='[
and this Friday we were outside for science class and it was freezing to the point are hands were unable to feel. He kept saying how he couldn't feel his hand so I was like "give your hand to me" and I held it and warmed it up. he then said "that helped a little" then a little while later he started complaining about the cold again so I told him to give his hand to me but this time I held it with the sleeve of my jacket and when he let go he's like "that didn't help that much" which is probably true but I don't know.
then today, Easter, he sent me a happy Easter e-mail which he only sent to one other person, his best friend Robert I'm guessing..I don't know the e-mail address.
but yeah, what should I do about this all?
and how could I flirt with him? or convince him to go out with me?
I have an idea..perhaps you can try very hard not to push the issue of dating, and be good friends with this young man. Back off a little and take time to develop his trust and once that happens you will know when it is time to ask him out again. If he is moving that does not mean he cannot stay in touch via email and phone. If you are at least friends, there is a very valid reason to see each other in the future. If you push for more and he cuts you off...you may never see him again. Just my thoughts. Best of luck he sounds like a nice young man.
well my mum noticed a lump on my chest when she was rubbing vopor-rub onto it, and decided that i should see a doctor. i went and he said it seems like a fracture, so i have an x-ray in 8days. i recently stopped smoking and was wondering if they will be able to see that i smoked (my mum will be there, dont want her to know). thanks:)
It would depend on several things..how long you have smoked, how much and how long ago it was that you quit smoking. It is quite possible some density from smoking could show up on the chest x-ray, although at this stage it would be difficult to determine the exact cause. Certain respiratory infections could show similar findings. Keep in mind those exposed to just a little second hand smoke can have findings on a chest x-ray. I know someone who hadn't smoked for 50 years...and had changes on a chest x-ray. Amazing!
i'm 14 and a freshman in high school. this winter, i have been sleeping a ton like i come home from school at 2:30 and by 3 most days im sleeping most days until dinner and some days i sleep through dinner and i just eat after i wake up. last night i went to bed at about 11 and i slept till 9 this morning and now its noon and i could fall asleep right now. i dont like sleeping so much!!! im always grouchy cause when i wake up im kinda out of it and im not the nicest person
The same thing happened to me when I was your age, and I can remember my family called me lazy! I was not lazy..I was so very tired! Eventually I got really sick and it turned out that I had mono, probably had it for a long time, but because I was usually very healthy it took a while for the major symptoms to appear. Another time as an adult..I was also that tired, I could barely get out of my car and make it into the house after work. I went to the Dr and had a hemaglobin done and I was anemic. My best advice, from experience.. would be to go to the Dr and tell him how much you are sleeping. Perhaps he will do some tests. If everything is okay, then you can work on something such as getting into a good routine, but best to rule out health causes first.
Monthly/Yearly?
Hay and feed prices vary throughout the US so it would depend on where you live. Are you keeping the horse on your own property? I just read somewhere that the average cost per year, per horse is about $4,000. However, horses seem to crop up with emergencies frequently..one colic surgery could cost that much easily, so it would be best to have savings for those types of things.
Parelli
Pros and Cons?
Is it any good?
How long does it take to see results?
Thankss
The how long it takes to see positive results would depend on the horse handler, and the horse. However his plan of building a good relationship with the horse is a good one, and with most horses I have found I notice results almost immediatly with any of the natural horsemanship methods. (especially on a long line or at liberty in a round pen) Most trainers are accomplishing the same thing there, just coin it a bit differently.
Pros: Parelli takes each horse into consideration--if you do the horsinality test on his site you will know where your horse is and how they learn best. Then he gives methods to train a horse with that specific horsinality--or personality. I don't see many other trainers that do that. So that is a plus. His method of "play-to-learn" is also good and the horses like it.
Cons: could be that he talks to much and does little demonstration, and that his program is way too expensive.
