#1 - There are several types and regimens of chemotherapy. Some of them are weak enough they don't even cause significant hair loss. Others, especially combinations of several strong drugs, make you lose EVERY hair, including the hairs in your nose and ears, your eyebrows, eyelashes, pubes, toe hairs, everything. Some of them are strong enough to cause the hair cells inside your inner ears to die, causing deafness. Chemotherapy prevents rapidly-dividing tissues, like our hair and the lining of our guts, from growing. That's also why it makes us puke a lot and why it kills babies in the uterus.
#2 - The hours in daylight savings? Well, what we call time is just the subjective measurement of the objective reality of time. We can measure it in hours, but just because we say it's 2:00 doesn't make it so. It's just our shorthand. In the spring, we skip an hour so at 2:00, we say it's 3:00. Then in the fall, we repeat 2:00 to get back on schedule. We could accomplish the same thing by saying that we're all going to work from 7-4 instead of 8-5 from April to October. We can't make time either appear or disappear. The same applies for Leap Day, when we add an extra day to our calendar to adjust for the fact that a year is not truly exactly 365 days long. It's off by a few hours, which we save up and take once every 4 years (with exceptions). We change our clocks with Daylight Savings Time so that we are awake and doing business during more of the time when the sun is up. That is supposed to prevent accidents and save money and energy on lighting.
#3 - I asked Xenolan about this one. He says night vision goggles work on a different wavelength of light. They give off this light which we can't see unaided. If you looked in the mirror with nightgoggles, you would likely see the glare of the special light being reflected back at you. It might shine a little on your face, but you may not be able to see your face in the mirror.
#4 - A baby doesn't feel the umbilical cord being cut. The umbilical cord has two veins and an artery, but no nerves. It is part of the placenta's tissue, not the baby's tissue. Like hair, it is human tissue, but lacks pain sensors. Now, the umbilical cord attaches to the baby's belly button (umbilicus), but once the blood supply from the placenta to the umbilical cord is cut, the cord dies, turns black, dries up, and falls off after approximately 10-14 days. Sometimes there's a little bleeding where the cord was attached to the baby's belly. I don't think it hurts, but maybe it's like pulling a scab. I've only seen a couple of them fall off and the babies didn't seem to notice at all. Of course, they're only a couple of weeks old at that time and they don't tend to say "Yo. There's something funky going on right there."
#5 - Why can't liquor freeze? Well, it can. It depends on the content of ethyl alcohol. The higher the alcohol content, the lower the freezing point is. It just has a lower freezing point than water does. It's molecules are not as close together as the molecules in water. Pure ethyl alcohol will freeze at approximately -114 degrees C. Household freezers are about -10 degrees C.
I hope I helped!

hey,
Alot of guys tell me that they think I am hot, and that is great. but...im affriad that once people see me like in a bathing suit or when I have sex with someone they wont think that anymore because I am kinda hairy. Like i have some on my stomach too!
My question is...this is kinda gross....but I have hair like in my butt and around the hole and stuff....does anyone else have this? Is it possible to get rid of it? cause i mean...shaving might be painful. Thank you so much! (link)
|
You probably are hot! Yes, we all have unwanted hair. There's the linea negra, or "pleasure trail" which is a line of fine, slightly dark hair leading from our navels to our pubic lines. We get hairs around our nipples sometimes and in our armpits amd legs. We get it in our pubic regions, spreading to the inner thighs sometimes. I have a few errant hairs about halfway down my inner thighs which I pluck out with tweezers. Have you ever heard of a Brazillian Wax? I have never had one, but according to an article I read, they spread your butt cheeks and put the wax all the way up your crack, around your anus, and all over your labia. It's pretty extreme. We all have little hairs around our anuses. I have worked in the medical field for so long, I know it's normal. You can get rid of it. I don't know how old you are, but if your Mom still has a say, you probably shouldn't do anything yet. When you're old enough, you can shave it, wax it, or use Nair. It might be itchy when it grows back. When you have sex with someone, don't worry, he'll probably be hairier than you and he will likely have better things to think about than your body hair. :)
Hope it helps.

I have an infected knee (the clinic doctor thinks) so I've been taking antibiotics for the infection. About 3 days after I started the antibiotics I started to get sick. Unless being sick is directly related to the antibiotics, I shouldn't be getting sick, right? Or am I wrong about what antibiotics do? (link)
|
What do you mean by sick? Are you getting an upset stomach? Some antibiotics are hard on your stomach. Most of the penacillamines, such as Augmentin, can give you abdominal pain, nausea, and sometimes vomiting. Rather than going back to the clinic, however, please call and leave a message for your doctor. S/He may be able to say over the phone whether you should continue that antibiotic, stop it, or switch to another. If, by "sick" you mean you're getting diarrhea, go to your pharmacy and ask for the acidophillus that's kept in the refrigerator. It will help with diarrhea, gas, bloating, etc. The dry tablets are of little to no help. Antibiotics are able to kill only specific bacteria and some bacteria are resistant. You may be getting a bacterial infection which is not affected by the antibiotic your doctor prescribed. You may also be getting a viral infection. Antibiotics are no help against viruses. We just have to fight most of those off by ourselves. Call your doctor right away, night or day, if you see red streaks going up your leg. This could be a sign the infection is entering your blood stream.
I hope you feel better.

why are the scented kind of tampons bad for you? (link)
|
The other two were right. The doctors I used to work for advised against using them simply because they were saturated with perfumes, which can cause irritation and lead to discomfort, bleeding, and infections in sensitive people. Some people find they work okay without any irritation. Be aware that you can develop allergies, as well, so sometimes something won't bother you at first, but can become a problem later on.

i know there are alot of these questions, but im 16 and me and my boyfriend had sex and it was my first time. i dunno if im just really paranoid, or that since it was my first time, I was ignorant and naive. before having sex we did some stuff he didn't go all the way in because he didn't have a condom, but im wondering if thats what could get me pregante. I'm showing symtoms like my chest hurts and i have insane cravings in the middle of the night, also im having cramps and im no where near my period, could i be pregnate?? Also, our relationship is kinda dying, it's getting more and more boring and little things are starting to bug me. when we first started dating everything was so exciting and never boring but now its just kinda blahh... but i love him, and i dont wanna break up with him, but i want the realationship to get better... how should i tell him that im bored and what should i do about it?? (link)
|
Eesh...
Okay, you can get pregnant from incomplete insertion of the penis into the vagina. All it takes is one sperm getting into your fallopian tube at the right time to make you pregnant. Even the pre-cum which collects on the head of the penis when the man is erect (has a hard-on) can have sperm and can cause pregnancy. Putting his penile discharge anywhere near your vagina is dangerous. If you don't want to be pregnant, do not let him put his penis even at the opening of your vagina without protection. You say you're nowhere near your period. That means you probably are not pregnant, but experiencing PMS. People usually are most fertile about 14 days after the start of their period, so you may have missed it. Most people experience no symptoms of pregnancy, either, until after they have already missed a period.
Regarding keeping the relationship fresh, I suggest that you think about what attracted you to him in the first place. You must have common interests or experiences. Try to find something to talk about and do with him.

i've been on the pill for almost a year.. and i got my period when im not supposed to. what does this mean? could it mean im pregnant?? (link)
|
I agree and disagree with previous advice. You can be pregnant and on the pill and have bleeding that looks like a period, but which is actually not uncommon in early pregnancy. Chances are, though, you are NOT pregnant. You should talk to your doctor because breakthrough bleeding could mean that the balance of hormones, estrogen and progesterone, are not working well for your body. Take a drug store pregnancy test or go to Planned Parenthood if you need to relieve your mind.
Hope it gets better.

Ok, my freind wanted me to ask what you guys think about masterbation. Is masterbation healthy, perverted or what? Why? (link)
|
It's normal and healthy. It's not perverted, though some people might think that whatever you fantasize about is perverted. I think a fantasy is just that and if it doesn't hurt anyone, who cares? I think that masturbation releases sexual tension, allows people to meet their own needs, and makes a person a better lover by making them aware of what feels good to themselves and comfortable with their bodies. Futher, I think it may help save lives because we should all be aware of what our bodies feel like so we notice unusual lumps in breast or testicle tissues. Tell your friend to just be sure to lock the door to avoid embarassment. :)

Okay, I'm not having a miscarriage or anything. So chillax. Haha but I do want to know what exactly are miscarriages? What are the cause of them and how do you know if you have one and what happens after or during a miscarriage? What happens to the baby..fetus, whatever? Does it hurt or something? (link)
|
A miscarriage is the spontaneous, natural ending of a pregnancy through death of the fetus (baby if you prefer). The medical term for it is spontaneous abortion, as opposed to elective abortion or therapeutic abortion. The term miscarriage is most commonly used when the fetal death takes place before the age of viability, when the baby could survive outside the womb. That's generally considered around 20-23 weeks after the start of the mother's last menstrual period. After that time, the child is generally considered a stillborn baby. Miscarriages are caused by a few things, among them birth defects (the fetus has health problems, such as a problem in developing the heart, which cause it to die in the womb), problems with the mother's uterus or placenta, causing the fetus either to lose oxygen or food or to be expelled from the uterus too early, or trauma, such as a blow to the woman's abdomen or use of medications which either kill the fetus in the womb or cause a problem with the uterus or placenta.
What happens during a miscarriage depends on the cause, but the fetus dies and is either expelled naturally through cramps and bleeding or is retained in the mother's uterus. If it's retained, the mother might need a D&C, where the doctor opens up her cervix and uses a tool to scrape out the dead fetus, placenta, and uterine lining. It's usually painful for the mother and often emotionally and physically traumatic. She can lose a lot of blood. We're not sure what the fetus feels, though we think it has no capacity for pain up until about the 20th week of gestation, when neurons migrate to the areas of the brain which may allow a fetus to feel pain. We still don't know when exactly that happens. If the fetus is expelled at home, the mother can choose to save it and bury it or take it to a doctor to find out why it died, etc. If it is expelled or surgically removed at a hospital or clinic, it is disposed of as medical waste after any requested testing. I'm not sure at what point a woman can request that the fetus be returned to her for burial as a stillborn baby rather than burned as medical waste. It probably depends on the hospital.
How do you know if you have had one? First, you may have known you were pregnant, with fatigue, morning sickness, and breast tenderness, along with lack of menstruation. If it was still early, you might have cramping which starts slight, but which builds to severe. You may have continuous spotting, which escalates to bleeding. Then you would expell a small amount of tissue, which you may not even notice, along with clots and blood. A 6-week gestation fetus is only a few millimeters long. An early miscarriage sometimes is mistaken for a harsh period. It probably happens more often than we know. Estimates are that, for one reason or another, 50% of pregnancies end up in miscarriage. Human life is fragile.
I hope you never have to find out first-hand. I also found this link, if you're still curious:

I have this really cool thing. Its like a plastic thing with gel stuff inside and it heats up when when you do summat with this metal bit. Does anyone know what it is or how to use one?? (link)
|
Sounds like an instant heat pack I've used with patients. You tweak a metal disc in a gel pack and the gel heats up and becomes a solid. It's some chemical reaction you're causing which makes the gel become supersaturated, releasing heat and causing consolidation of the gel. After the chemical reaction is over, you usually boil it for 10 minutes or so and it's reset and ready for the next use. They're great things to have, in my opinion. Is there a manufacturer's name on it? I'd bet they have instructions for how to use it. Meanwhile, enjoy having warm hands! :)

ok i have over axcess ear wax and do you know of anything that i can use to dissolve it i need all the help i can get i already tried q-tips it only makes it worse please help (link)
|
Please ignore any advice which tells you to stick anything in your ear. It's dangerous! You could burst your eardrum, causing scarring and permanent hearing loss. I have been in the medical profession for many years and have done earwashes professionally. Here is what you need to do. Go to Walmart, etc., and get an over-the-counter product called Debrox. Use that according to the package instructions. That will soften up the earwax. Then you use a bulb syringe, which you can also find at Walmart. Using WARM water, gently squirt the water into your ear to wash the wax out. You can use Q-tips only on the outside of your ear canal. If this does not help your problem, bring it up with your doctor. A DOCTOR and ONLY A DOCTOR can use tools to dig ear wax out safely.
Good luck.

It seems like all fashion models are tall, and when watching Americas Next Top Model on tv, there was this one girl (bre i think) and they said she was like almost too short to be a model, and she wasnt even that short! I'm only 13/f right now, but when i grow older i want to try to be a model, but i'm extremely short, so i was wondering if there is any modeling careers out there that let shorter people model (right now i'm only like almost five foot) (link)
|
Don't forget that there are petite-sized models who are 5'4" and under. They are not walking in the mainstream shows at Milan, but they can make a living modeling for catalogues, etc. The average American woman is 5'4" and 140 lb. Some women can be absolutely gorgous, but will never be fashion models because they don't fit into that 2% of the population that's over 5'10" and less than 110 lb. It's an unrealistic body type and if you're not born with it, you simply don't have much chance as a mainstream fashion model. Did your parents tell you you could be anything you wanted to be when you grew up? Well, it's not true. :) But you have other options. Just look for them.

Im a 14 year old girl. i just recently [about a month ago] tried to commit suicide. but before i could my friend steped in a took my to my school counciler. from there my mom was called in and she was crying.. blah blah. mk well i was fine after that. me and my sister got back on track with each other. about two weeks later i started to cut myslef. in one night i had cut all the way up to my elbow. after that night i stoped. the next day i was happy. i dont get why all of this is happening. i am happy one day then i feel like slicing someone open and i have all this anger. no one ses this side of me. only my family and i am so mean to them its un real. but i hate that after the fact. after screaming my head off and wishing they would die i feel so low; so horrible. i write my feelings down in poems and other ways. i hate when i am in this mood but i dont kno how to ask for help. i tried once and they blew it off like teenage hormons and i let them. now im afride that one night i will have no control and go that extra mile. which i dont want to kill myslef but when i get in that mood i have lost all control and another me is showing... i am never this way with my friends just with my family; when the littlest thing ticks me off. i want so badly to totaly forget my family and leave. let me put it this way; i would rather be put in a mental intitution instead of live in this house. [i dont get betten i just dont conect w/ any family member]
please someone; how can i ask for help without directly asking for it. no one sees me hurting becuase i get this way when i am alone and i feel so emberrsed when i get this way. i dont kno what to do. im so confused. (link)
|
You have already asked for help when you confided in your friend that you were going to commit suicide. You should go back to that counselor and tell him/her exactly what you told us. If you can't say it, write it down or show him/her this site. Your life can get much better, dear, but you need help to get there. Don't put this off, please. Ask for the help you need now before you hurt yourself again.

does anybody know how much they cost & if it hurts & stuff like that? i definitely dont need one im just curious. (link)
|
Let's see. When I had one (the fetus was not viable) in 1995, it cost $300 cash at a local gynecologist's office on an outpatient basis. I was less than 12 weeks gestation, so it was early. I believe that the price of an abortion depends on how far along you are and which specific procedure you need to have (whether it's the Mifeprex pill, a simple dilation and curretage, or D&C, or whether they have to do something more). It also could cost more if you have complications, such as bleeding or an infection following the procedure.
This is what I pulled up on my local Planned Parenhood site:
************************************
Prices as of November 1, 2004:
Medication Abortion (availability determined by PPSTSCHS ultrasound, you must be under 56 days/8 weeks) $450
Surgical Abortion
10 days to 4.6 weeks - $595
5 weeks to 9.6 weeks - $395
10 weeks to 11.6 weeks - $450
12 weeks to 13.6 weeks - $595
14 weeks to 15.6 weeks - $850
ultrasound only - $280
Price includes everything, no additional charges. Payment may be made by MasterCard/VISA, Discover, Amercian Express, cash, check, or money order.
**************************************
It's not a comfortable thing and you may end up feeling sad about it for a while even if you are absolutely sure it's the right decision. I have a friend who's had 2 abortions and she says she was given medication and it was not painful.
I hope you never really need to know!

i got my period like a few months ago
and i still wear pads
but i really want to wear tampons
but everytime i go to put it in i dont do it right and im pretty sure im doing it right i just dont know how to get it in all the way
(link)
|
Is it possible that you can't insert it all the way because your hymen (a membrane which partially covers the opening of the vagina, mostly in sexually inexperienced girls) is not allowing the tampon inside? Some girls have a problem with that. If that's the case, you will have to either choose to force it, possibly breaking your hymen, or use pads.
Good luck,

okay well i started my period 2 days ago on new years eve and it has been pretty heavy but i am sooooo itchy [down there] and i dont know if that is normal but i can't stand and i am scared to go back to school have to scratch all the time :\ and is it bad if the blood gets on the place where you pee out of?
and how long do 1st periods start?
thanks in advance! (link)
|
First periods are unpredictable. There's no way of telling, but it's usually between 3 and 5 days, according to what I've read. They can be itchy. Additionally, you may have a hard time getting used to the feeling of a pad or tampon down there and the menstrual fluid can cause itching. Change your pad or tampon often (every 1-4 hours). You can use some over-the-counter Vagisil wipes, which help greatly with the itching. They come individually wrapped in packets, so they're discreet. Your parent, sister, friend, aunt, etc. may buy these for you if you are embarrassed. Make sure to keep your labia clean and wipe from front to back. Shower every day and use a water-moistened cloth at night. DO NOT USE SOAP ON YOUR VAGINAL AREA. Yes, it's a little bad to get the blood in your urinary meatus (the hole where the pee comes out) because the menstrual fluid has bacteria in it and the bacteria can travel up the urethra, which is the tube leading from your bladder to the outside of your body. Once there, the bacteria can cause a bladder infection, which is very uncomfortable and rarely develops into a kidney infection.
It'll get better, dear. Hang in there!

If you shave your vagina
is it better to use cold or hot or warm water?
thank s (link)
|
Use warm water. Preferrably, you should soak in a tub. It will make the hair a little less 'wiry' and easier to cut. You can shave in the tub, under the water, easily. I would also use Skintastic or some other female shaving cream.

Many people say they need to burn calories, carbs, and fat but how come it's in three categories but when you burn them it's still burning fat? Is it only one that's actually making you fat? My friend is fat and does EXTREME excercing for a year! Walking 3 km a day, and many excercises one hour a day and even eats healthy but she hasn't even gone skinny. Any advice for her? And which excercises would workl to burn fat, caloires, and carbs and which one of these three are actually making you fat? (link)
|
Okay. Calories are units of energy. When we eat food, we take in three primary kinds of nutrients. The first is protein. The second is carbohydrates. The third is fat. Carbohydrates and proteins have about 4 calories per gram of food. Fat has 9 calories per gram. It gives much more energy per equivalent sized piece than either carbs or proteins. However, when we eat, our bodies are efficient at getting all of the calories out of our foods and storing what we won't use right away. Those stored calories (whether from proteins, carbs, or fats) are usually stored in our bodies as fat (adipose tissue) which we can see. The carbs are used mostly for short-term energy needs, but they can be converted to cholesterol and stored as fat. The proteins are usually broken up into amino acids and used to build or repair cells. These are all very important nutrients. You cannot survive without any of those three. Fats and proteins are found in animal and plant sources (meat and beans, dairy, etc.). Carbohydrates are usually vegetable or grain-derived.
The bottom line is that your friend should watch her intake of all three components, but that she should watch her intake of fats because they are particularly calorie-dense (and remember, whatever calories we don't use right away are deposited on our rear-ends). She would be careful about carbohydrates, including starches and sugars as well as alcohol, because those can be converted to fat. She should be careful with her protein intake because protein and fats are almost always coupled together. So, the carbs and the fats and the proteins are the foods which, in our bodies are converted into body fat.
The only way to lose weight is this: burn more calories than you are taking in. There are some places, such as diet centers, who claim to be able to measure your metabolism (see how quickly your body burns energy, since we all burn it at a different rate). Those may be able to help her figure out how long it takes her, personally, to burn off one cupcake. Since you seem to be in Europe (metric references), I don't know where your friend shoud go to get this measurement done.
In any case, she should not cut out any one food. We need all kinds of foods. She should be aware of quantity and balance between the three groups.
The advice you were given before is also true. There are many studies out now which indicate that at least some of us carry genetically slow metabolisms. Our bodies are naturally efficient at storing calories and we burn our calories much more slowly than others. Your friend may have to come to the conclusion that sometimes a person can be big or 'fat' and also healthy. She should continue her exercising and know that she is in shape and healthy.
Didn't mean to write a book. Sorry. :)

So here's the scenerio, I got a set of proactive skin care for christmas and started using it that morning. It was working really well and my skin was looking better...
But.. the day after Christmas I left for a snowboarding trip with some friends. Now, I've heard from several sources that Proactive dries out your skin a BUNCH when you first start it, but it was only a day or so after we'd gotten there (and me continuing to use the proactive twice a day, once in the morning and night) that my skin got so dry it started to flake.
I used it once or twice more and then stopped, thinking it was just making my skin worse and worse. So I just started putting moisturizer on my face, hoping to repair it. It's been a week and my skin is still kind of flakey and dry and I don't know how to fix it or if I should start up my proactive again.
I'm also wondering if it was just the proactive that caused this intense reaction of my skin. I'm guessing that it might have been a mixture of the intensely dry air in our cabin from a fire, and the intense cold, plus the proactive..
And as an added bonus, my skin started to break out again today with zits. Should I start the proactive back up? Or should I wait for my face to completely heal again and then start it back up? And how do I heal it effectively? Has anyone else had this happen to them, and what's your experience with proactive skin products? :/
If you need more detail just indicate so and I'll send you another message in your inbox. :] Thank you!

Hey, Sarah.
Proactiv is a drying solution. You should first try exfoliating your skin. Get a minimally abrasive exfoliant (one I like is St. Ives apricot scrub for sensitive skin) or just use a warm, wet washcloth to take the flakes off of your skin. While it's still warm and wet, use a non-comedogenic moisturizer (one that doesn't contain oils to clog pores) to keep the moisture in. Then, call the customer service number for Proactiv. I bet you can find it either on your packaging or on the internet. Doesn't it have a money-back guarantee? Ask what they think you should do. I believe they have a sensitive skin formula. Maybe they would exchange it for you or give you or the gift-giver a refund.
Another tip for break-out prone skin is to use Biore strips. Those things will get rid of zits before they show up and make a nuisance of themselves. There are hundreds of products out there and you have to find the right ones for you. Some of my friends swear by the Basic line. Some like Proactiv. I do best with Neutrogena and Biore.
Good luck.

You should do three things. First, make sure you have enough lube. Second, insert your finger to try to find out where the blood is coming from. If it's coming from the entrance to the vagina, it's probably a friction issue. If it's coming from the cervix, there could be a problem. The third thing to do is see your gynecologist, armed with as much information as possible about how much blood and where it's coming from and whether it's on the condom, if applicable, and what brands of birth control, spermicide, etc. you use. Good luck.
