I have an infected knee (the clinic doctor thinks) so I've been taking antibiotics for the infection. About 3 days after I started the antibiotics I started to get sick. Unless being sick is directly related to the antibiotics, I shouldn't be getting sick, right? Or am I wrong about what antibiotics do?

Sabine answered Saturday January 6 2007, 11:06 pm: What do you mean by sick? Are you getting an upset stomach? Some antibiotics are hard on your stomach. Most of the penacillamines, such as Augmentin, can give you abdominal pain, nausea, and sometimes vomiting. Rather than going back to the clinic, however, please call and leave a message for your doctor. S/He may be able to say over the phone whether you should continue that antibiotic, stop it, or switch to another. If, by "sick" you mean you're getting diarrhea, go to your pharmacy and ask for the acidophillus that's kept in the refrigerator. It will help with diarrhea, gas, bloating, etc. The dry tablets are of little to no help. Antibiotics are able to kill only specific bacteria and some bacteria are resistant. You may be getting a bacterial infection which is not affected by the antibiotic your doctor prescribed. You may also be getting a viral infection. Antibiotics are no help against viruses. We just have to fight most of those off by ourselves. Call your doctor right away, night or day, if you see red streaks going up your leg. This could be a sign the infection is entering your blood stream.

It is POSSIBLE that you just happened to get sick right after starting to take antibiotics, but it is much more likely that you are sick as a result of the medicine. I reccomend going back to the doctor who perscribed those antibiotics and explaining your symptoms to him/her. It might be nothing, but it might be something important. I'm sure that the doctor will be able to answer your questions better than anyone here. Also, if it is a result of the antibiotics, then they should be able to perscribe a new, safer, medication for you. Hope I was able to help.
