How come fashion models can only be tall?

Question Posted Thursday January 4 2007, 7:56 pm

It seems like all fashion models are tall, and when watching Americas Next Top Model on tv, there was this one girl (bre i think) and they said she was like almost too short to be a model, and she wasnt even that short! I'm only 13/f right now, but when i grow older i want to try to be a model, but i'm extremely short, so i was wondering if there is any modeling careers out there that let shorter people model (right now i'm only like almost five foot)

Yes, you can do petite modeling. Many agencies offer this type of modeling, like Ford Models. And you're only thirteen, so you will probably grow more. I'm only a year older than you, and I've grown taller since I was thirteen. I was 5'7" when I was thirteen (still considered tall, in my opinion, the same height as Bre) and now I'm almost 5'9" So really, you have nothing to worry about your height. Because there is petite modeling, commercial modeling, hair modeling, hand/foot modeling, etc. Good luck! :)

If you're only 13, you still have some time to grow, so don't sweat it. ;) I myself am an ANTM junkie, and I actually heard Tyra say that it is a myth that models have to be 6 foot tall to do runway- generally, they are 5'9" to 5'11". But that's not to say you can't be a little shorter. Also, there are other types of modeling out there besides just runway- there is also commercial modeling, which is more magazines, cataloges, advertisements, and commercials. You may want to look into those as well! Good luck. :)

Don't forget that there are petite-sized models who are 5'4" and under. They are not walking in the mainstream shows at Milan, but they can make a living modeling for catalogues, etc. The average American woman is 5'4" and 140 lb. Some women can be absolutely gorgous, but will never be fashion models because they don't fit into that 2% of the population that's over 5'10" and less than 110 lb. It's an unrealistic body type and if you're not born with it, you simply don't have much chance as a mainstream fashion model. Did your parents tell you you could be anything you wanted to be when you grew up? Well, it's not true. :) But you have other options. Just look for them.

Depends on what type of modeling career you choose or want to be. I use to act and model in Chicago but they said I was too short to do runway. Now I am 16 and 5'5'' but they need tall women to be able to do that top see more stuff and they are picky I know. YOu may be able to model for like magazines and commercials though and what not but if you are not tall enough they won't let you do runway you usually have to be aroun 5'6 5'7

There might be but I doubt it. All fashion models have to be really tall, like at least 5'7 if you want to be on the runway like the models in America's Next Top Model. You're only 13 though so you have lots of time to grow. You could possibly become a model sometime later on or model in a magazine.
