about

I've been away for a while due to a serious illness and subsequent health issues.

Favourite quotes of the moment:

The children of Israel wandered the desert for 40 years - Even in biblical times men wouldn't ask for directions!

Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. whatever we do to the thread, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect. - Chief Seattle.

We spend the first 12 months of a child's life teaching them to walk and talk. We spend the next 12 years telling them to sit down and shut up!

As you slide down the bannisters of life, may the splinters never be pointing the wrong way.

May you be in Heaven half an hour before the devil knows you're dead.

I've been very happily married since August 1980 to a wonderful man and have beautiful twin girls, now aged 31. Both are married to wonderful young men and one of our girls has recently made us grandparents to a beautiful, smart and feisty granddaughter. I studied geology with the Open University. I am retired from being a manager in a large UK based insurance company which I actually quite enjoyed. (How sad is that?). I love anything to do with the environment and wildlife and try to do my bit for preservation and conservation. I would like there to be a decent world for our grandchildren to inherit. I also have CFS so find life a bit of a challenge at times but always hope for better health in the future.

I have a deep interest in the spiritual and the paranormal worlds, having experienced several incidents myself, and have been involved in meditation groups and groups that (safely) explore the paranormal. There is more to this life than we would normally credit, so an open mind is always the best option. You're not so likely to get caught by surprise!

I have a deep fascination for anything to do with Ancient Egypt, as you can probably tell by my name. I have statues and paintings all around the house. As my hubby has a similar interest in Native Americans, we tend to have a lot of unusual wall decorations, like a tomahawk.

I love cars, especially vintage ones, but my all time favourite has to be the Bugatti Chiron, what a car!

I have had a lot to do with animals over the years. I have fostered many, helped to set up a wildlife charitable hospital and raised a diverse range of young animals from bats to fox cubs and different species of birds, even a baby deer! I have had great pleasure in sharing my life and home with a number of animals over the years, most of them rescues. I am currently sponsoring an Amur Tiger, they are such beautiful cats and desperately need help, there are so few of them left. I was lucky enough a couple of years ago to meet some Aye-Aye's and Livingstone's Bats, a truly wonderful experience. We now have three cats, Oliver and Mollie, a brother and sister, he's a ginger and she's a tortoiseshell and a black and white called Daisy. She arrived in a taxi and was left on our doorstep in a cat carrier with the message that 'they knew we loved cats and would be good to her'. She has settled down well and gets on wonderfully with the other two.

If you have a pet that is showing ANY signs of illness or distress, please, please, please take it to a vet! Even if finance is an issue, work that out later. It is cruel to leave an animal suffering for any reason. Most animals do not show signs of illness until they have been ill for some time, basic instinct tells them it is a display of vulnerability, and certain death in the wild. Their instincts have not caught up with domesticity.

I do feel that we should all treat others as we would wish to be treated. Bad karma comes back to haunt us.

advice

You recently answered a question about a girl who took a lot of deep breaths and had a heart murmur when she was little. The exact same thing happens to me. When ever I think about it I feel like i have to take deep breathes, until I yawn...then it goes away. I also had a heart murmur when I was a baby but it fixed itself. You seemed very knowledgable and i wanted to ask you... Is this a coincidence or should I be worried?

If your heart fixed itself and the doctors were happy you needed no further treatment, you should be fine, however, as with any health concerns, it is always better to see your doctor and get it checked out properly. If you are experiencing other symptoms like fatigue, difficulty in exercising or chest pain, you really do need to see your doctor.
It does sound though, as if you have some residual fear of the condition you had as a baby. When you think about it, it could cause stress hormones to kick in, this can mean that without realising it, your breathing becomes more shallow. As your body is then becoming deprived of sufficient oxygen, you then feel the need to take several deeper breaths in order to remedy this. Yawning is the most proficient way the body has of getting oxygen quickly. This is why people yawn when they are tired. Their breathing gets more shallow as the body is preparing to wind down to sleep, but trying to stay awake means the body then needs more oxygen, so they yawn.
I am not a heart specialist and can only go on what I know, so I would urge you to see your doctor just to confirm that everything is still fine. There is no reason to take chances with your health, it's the best asset you'll ever have. If you are still concerned, let me know and I will do what I can.
I hope that helps and good luck to you.

i eat way to much all the time. like im not overweight or anything but i know it will cetch up to me sooner or later so i jsut need ways to stop eating so much & thinking about food all the time.

Try using a smaller plate for your food, it fools your brain into thinking there is more there than there actually is. Drink a glass of water before each meal as it will make you feel fuller quicker. Eat 6 small meals a day, this should stop you from getting so hungry that it's hard to stop when you have eaten enough. It also speeds up your metabolism so that fat gets burnt up quicker.
If you're eating too much from boredom, find a hobby, preferably one that occupies your hands, this will stop you thinking about food all the time and if your hands are busy, they won't automatically reach for snacks etc. (Unless of course you take up cooking, which would not be a good idea at the moment). Make sure you have prepared snacks at the ready, like carrot or celery sticks, or low fat/low cal snacks. Promise yourself a treat at the weekend if you have been good all week. A small bar of chocolate etc is a good reward to look forward and may help to keep you focused.
Hope that helps and good luck.

I have a problem with my cat eating wet food. She won't eat it, but she will lick the juice/sauce up from it. However she has no problem eating dry food. She'll eat 1/2 cup of it within a day. But I want to know why she will not eat her wet food. I have tried just every kind of wet food out there. But nothing worked. What could I do to solve this or fix this? Or should I just forget it and leave her with just dry food?

But just a note I really want her to eat wet food because it's nutritious and has important ingredients in there that aren't contained in dry food.

And because of this my cat is pretty skinny -- only three pounds.

If it helps, my cat is approximately 7 months old (older kitten).

Thanks in advance!

If you're using a good quality dry cat food it should in fact be better nutritionally for your cat than the usual wet food. It also has the advantage of helping to scrape the teeth of tarter build up. You just need to ensure she has constant access to water as she would need to drink more. If you want her to put on some weight, there are a variety of dry foods geared to dietary requirements. Hills Science Plan is a good one and so is James Wellbeloved. You would need to use one for kittens until she is a year old. Then change to adult, when she is 7 you would need to put her on the senior diet.
If you want her to have the occasional wet food as a treat, she may not like 'lumps' in her food. I know my cats, although they mainly eat the dry diet, will not eat lumpy wet food. They too, will just lick the gravy. I have to either buy pate or mash the lumps in any other wet food.
Hope that helps and good luck.

this might be gross but i really need you help. i have a bladder condition. its uncontrollable and when i go to the bathroom, 5 minutes later if im with friends, they probably would say something funny and i would pee my pants. i use all of my pad that i use for my peirod in my underwear when i am with my friends. its too embarrassing to tell my mom because she never notices. i can't go to my doctor because im too young and can't drive yet. idk what to do please help.

There really is nothing to be embarrassed about, it is far more common that you would think. If you don't want to use medication, you could try something called pelvic floor exercises.
When you have to pee normally, try to stop half way, the muscles you use to do this are the ones you need to exercise. You can do this anywhere as no one will see what you are doing. Try to do this several times a day for the rest of your life and you should be able to build them up so that this does not happen again. Also if they are strong and at some point in the future you want children, it will make it easier to recover strength in that area, as it is usually affected by pregnancy and labour.
It is hard to do this and to have the discipline to continue but it is worth it and you should see the results of it in a month or two.
Hope that helps and good luck.

Once you have an abortion is it not possible to have a baby again?

It is possible to have a baby after an abortion but sometimes it can make it more difficult to conceive. Occasionally there are complications during the procedure that cause lasting damge and problems.
Hope that helps.

does anybody know if Chinchillas make good pets?
and does anybody know about taking care of them:
grooming
diet
etc.

thanks!

Chinchillas can make good pets but like any other they need care and attention. They also need a good strong cage, and if let lose they will gnaw on any wooden furniture.
I have included a couple of web sites to give you more information.

My hands keep having this "tingling" sensation several times a day. My dad said it could possibly be from high cholesterol, and/or lack of exercise. Although I exercise often. It may be diet but I am not exactly sure. It even randomly comes up in my hands. It's also pretty annoying. I can run around and it'll act up again. What could be some possible explanations for this? And what could I do to treat it or prevent it?

Do you do a lot of typing on a computer? It could be RSI, (Repetitive Strain Injury), Carpel Tunnel Syndrome etc.
If you do type or do anything else that has a repetitive motion both of these are a possible.
You really should see your doctor to get this checked out. There may be another cause but the sooner you are diagnosed the sooner you should hopefully start to recover.
Hope that helps and good luck.

is spaying and neutering a pet wrong?

Spaying and neutering is a good idea for cats and dogs for several reasons.
Firstly, there are so many strays that are in need of loving homes, there is no call to let pets reproduce. It doesn't bother them, they don't miss having kittens/puppies, it's only sentiment on our part that thinks that they may.
Secondly, it stops male dogs getting over excited and humping anything that stays still long enough, and the females do not have to be guarded on walks from said over excited dogs. Male cats are less likely to stray or fight, and female cats will not disappear in search of a male.
Thirdly, the males of both species cannot then develop testicular cancer, which is quite common in un-neutered older dogs, and the females of both cannot develop uterine cancer, which is again, quite common in the older animal.
It also means that you are not left with hard decision whether to part with them or not and finding suitable homes.
Hope that helps.

can u make perfume stay on longer

Answer below is correct but if you have coloured or dry hair you should take care as perfume can affect it. Also, spraying it onto clothes can mark some fabrics, so you should try a test area first.
Some perfumes do last longer than others, so go to a perfume shop, try a few samples and see which ones last the longest.
Perfumes react with your skin chemistry is why some smell better than others and some will not last very long.
Hope that helps and good luck.

Alright, so you know how there are things you spray in your hair before you straighten it to protect it from the heat? Like, the products that come in spray bottles (VO5 miracle mist, tresemme heat tamer, etc.) Well, the directions say that you should spray it in your hair before you straighten it; but my question is, should I let the spray dry? Because the directions say nothing about letting product dry and then straightening it, but when I don't let it dry and I straighten my hair, it makes a sizzling sound and it gets all smoky and stuff and I've heard before that you're not supposed to straighten your hair while it's wet or it will get fried. So yeah, is straightening my hair while the product is in okay, or should I just let it dry? Thanks.

It should be a light misting only. Not enough to dampen the hair so that you get the sizzling. You do not have to wait for it to dry if you do this.
You're right, straightening damp hair can cause damage over time so just use a little, it will last longer as well.
Hope that helps, good luck.

my friend whos a guy called his girlfriend a prude..
what does a prude mean?

A prude is a person who is overly modest or prim and proper. It is generally not a positive thing to say to a person.
It depends on why he called her a prude. Does he want her to do something she is not comfortable doing, or is she lacking a sense of humour, or unable to let go in a social situation and enjoy herself?
Hope that helps.

How about holding a house warming party? Invite all your neighbours and ask them to bring one friend each. In that crowd you should be able to find a few new friends.
Hope that helps and good luck, it's never easy starting again.

I didn't know what category to put this in sorry..
but anyway.. sometimes out of random, I'll just be like breathing normally, then suddenly I'll feel like I have to take a really deep breath. I've noticed this a lot when I'm laying in my bed too. I think half of it is just me thinking about it though, because when I'm laying in my bed and like zone off into a little world, it doesn't bother me. But the more I think about it, the more I'm like breathing really deep. Also I've found out that when I yawn, it goes away. lol. This sounds so stupid but it's happening a lot now and I don't know why. I don't know if this has anything to do with it.. but my parents said when I was born I had a heart murmur.. but it closed up.. What exactly is a heart murmur and could it of opened up again and possibly be causing this? Also, I think my dad has asthma, could it be that? Why wouldn't I have known I had asthma before though [I'm 14]. I'm not overweight. I don't get much exercise however, especially since it's summer, I'm usually on the computer. Does anybody have any clue why this is happening? Sometimes when I'm lying in my bed too, when I take a deep breath in, it sounds like something cracks or something.. lol not like bad but like if you cracked your knuckles, like a sound like that. Ahh, what's wrong with me??? Sorry it was so longg. Please help. thank youu

If you're coughing at night so that it wakes you up, it is possible you have inherited your dad's asthma. You would need to see a doctor to get this checked out.
The occasional deep breath may be nothing to worry about. It could be boredom, the lack of exercise, you may just sometimes not be taking in enough oxygen etc.
I always say that if you are concerned about your health, talk to your parents and then see a doctor, they are the ones qualified to answer your queries and calm your fears.
As to the heart murmur, lots of children are born with them, in the majority of cases it sorts itself out in time and has no effect on the childs health.
Briefly, the heart is divided into 4 chambers, 2 are on the the left side of the heart and 2 on the right. The blood returning from the body is pumped to the lungs to be oxygenated, then it is pumped through the arteries to the rest of the body. After this oxygen has been used, the blood returns to the heart through the veins and the cycle starts again.
The word murmur describes a sort of swishing sound that is made as the blood flows through any of the heart's chambers or valves, or even through a hole within the heart (not so common). Murmurs are rated on a scale of 1-6. 1 is barely audible and 6 is very loud. Depending on the type of noise, a doctor should be able to tell where in the heart it is. If the doctor then considers further treatment to be necessary, a child would be referred to a cardiologist.
The most common type of heart murmur is a functional or innocent murmur. It is produced by a normal, healthy heart and generally goes away as the child gets older and poses no threat.
This sounds as though it could be the type you had if you're fine now. If you're still concerned, ask your parents and/or doctor for more information about it.
Hope that helps and good luck.

I'm soo incredibly confused. Ok, so if it were 12:00 PM (lunchtime), what time would it be in France? Like, how many hours ahead/behind are they?

It really does depend on where you are. I have given a web site that lists the different current time zones, so if you go to the Europe page it will give you the current time for France. It will also give you the current times for places all over the world.

I am overweight by about 40-50 pounds. Up until 2 days ago, I could take out a 2 liter of soda like it wasnt nothing. I've started drink water (for the first time in ages) and am trying to kick the soda habit. My back hurts constantly, to the point where it consumes all my thoughts. I need help. I'm also a 38DDD cup size. Someone tell me what to do I cant take this back pain ANYMORE! I also smoke. Yea I know I'm destroying myself! Right now I'm willing to do anything. I'd rather not quit smoking right now though because I suspect I need to lose the weight and stuff and I can't kick everything at once! I rate!!

It's great that you've taken the first step by cutting down on soda and drinking water instead.
Further things you can do to help is to eat 6 small well balanced meals a day instead of one. Your body will then stop the primeval instinct of storing fat, as one meal a day makes it think there is a famine, it will also increase your metabolism. Try not to lose weight too quickly as the faster it comes off the more likely you are to put it back on again. Try to eat 5 portions of fruit and veg a day, cut back on fatty food and carbs, if you feel hungry, snack on low fat/low cal things or carrot or celery sticks. Try swimming for exercise as this will support your back, just be careful what strokes you use. You will need to be very careful what exercise you do, your doctor will be able to advise you further on this.
You do need to see your doctor about your back pain, as it is entirely possible that unless you have hurt it, it is heavy breasts causing the pain. You may be able to get a breast reduction if they are affecting your health and well being. With weight loss, they should shrink a little but probably not enough to make you feel much more comfortable. Have you got a decent supportive bra? These can help with back pain caused by large breasts but they won't solve the whole problem.
I'm not surprised you're smoking with all this going on, and whilst I am not a fan of smoking, I'm inclined to agree that trying to give this up as well as dealing with everything else may be a little too much at the moment.
Once you have the diet under control and you have seen the doctor about your back, you could try some of the many options available that help you over this final hurdle. These range from hypnotherapy and acupuncture to over the counter aids like patches and gum.
I hope this helps and wish you the best of luck.

I have been taking my birth control pills for about 2 weeks and this is my third week taking them and i had unprotective sex on monday night. what are my chances of getting pregnant? Please help me and please no 13 or 14 year old give me advice.!!! thanks in advance

Well you have put yourself at risk as you have not been taking the pill long enough for it to fully kick in. The other problem is that having left it until now, you're probably too late for the morning after pill. You could go to the pharmacy/doctor and see if there is still time.
If it is too late, they will be able to advise you of your options. You will need to take a pregnancy test within the next few days to check the situation.
I hope this helps and that the result is the one you want it to be, good luck.

Guys, my dog is an inside puppy, hes about 10 weeks old, and we leave him outside sometimes, like when we have to leave, and when he was out there today, he found out how to open one of the ant poison things, AND ate everything in it!!!!
Does anybody know fi thats strong enough to kill him?! PLEASE HELP ME

He needs to see the vet asap. Ant poison isn't as bad as rat poison, but can still be dangerous for small dogs.
If this is likely to happen again, you can get animal friendly ant powder.
Hope he's going to be ok, best of luck.

I got a perm about a week ago and they burnt my neck with the chemicals. My mom told me to put lotion on it...but that isn't really helping much, it's peeling like a sunburn and it has scabs on it. I'm not pickingat it either. Anyway, I have a pool party i'm going to tomorrow and i'm going to have to put my hair up so everyone is going to see that gross thing at the back of my neck. if anyone has has this happen to them....how did you get it to go away quickly????? Please answer right away!!! Thanks in advance i will rate.

A pharmacist should be able to recommend something to soothe and help to heal it. They will also be able to advise if chlorine is going to make it worse.
You should, however, complain to the salon that caused this, chemicals should be handled with caution and can cause scarring if not done correctly. They need to know there is a problem.
Hope that helps and you enjoy your party.

what is morning breath how did i get it and how do i get rid of it

I guess morning breath is the equivalent of a musty room that no one has used in a while. During the day we are usually talking so our mouths get an airing, and we eat and drink so that it's like using air freshener. If you shut your room up with something that is going to leave a bad odour, like garlic, it's going to smell worse when you open up again.
Enough with the analogies, hope that helps though.

Alright, This is really gross. but the last 3 days,i've had like, diarrhea, but its reddish, like, blood. but i'm not on my period for another 2 weeks, somebody please tell me whats wrong with me??

The redder the blood the closer to the exit it originated, so if you have diarrhoea as well, the chances are that the large bowel is upset for some reason. You really need to see a doctor to get this sorted out, especially if there is a lot of blood and it's been going on for a while. There are many things that could cause this and only a doctor will be able to correctly diagnose you.
In the meantime, make sure you drink a lot of water to replace the fluids your body is losing.
Hope that helps and good luck.
