i have an older laptop, i just got it its somewhere from '85 to '92 and I accidently deleted some files and now it wont even let me get on the computer. it wont let me get to microsoft windows. how do I get on there and undelete the files if possible? it keeps saying error.... (link)
|
If your laptop is really that old, that'd be a low-end 486 processor anyway. Is it really worth it to keep it alive at this point? It likely might be that the harddrive inside it is dying. A laptop from 1985-1992 era would have great difficulty running Windows 95, must less Windows 3/3.11/etc.

how do you get inbox? and why don't i have any? and what is inbox? i rate high no stupid answers please (link)
|
The inbox is where you'd get any questions asked directly to you, as opposed to question asked to the site as a whole. People are able to ask each other questions directly.

I know your specialty probably isn't either, but I wanted an intelligent opinion. I'm asking my favorite columnists and the pool this question in hopes of finding a "light-shining" answer.
I've had this crush on this girl for quite some time. It's gotten to the point where I'll buy stuff I don't really need, nor do I really want, just to talk to her. She always seems happy to see me and always gives me a big hug before I leave. The problem is I have no idea how old she is. I'm not the type of guy who judges people who date younger or older people, but it seems to worry my when I'm involved. I'm 20, what if she's only 15 or 16. She looks and kind of acts young, so I'm worried. What do you think the dating age limit should be for someone like myself?
The other problem. Earlier today, I saw scars and cuts on her rist. It doesn't look like something an accident would have caused. I know she can't really die from cuts on arm, but the scars aren't exactly good for her either. How should I go about asking her where they're from? Is it even my business to ask such a question? What if she obviously lies to me about the scar's origins? Should I just drop it then or what? (link)
|
Well, it certainly can't hurt to talk to her. Beyond that, I'm not sure how to devine her age - you could cut her in half and count the rings, but I think there are laws or something that prohibit that... you could attempt context clues with small-talk about school? Just a thought. If it turns out that she is 15-16, the age difference at that level is huge, and you'd be treading dangerous waters - I'd recommend against it. 18-19 would not be a big deal, but below that the age difference can be too much (not even considering the legal ramifications)...
About the cuts? You can ask, but I'll guess that she'd likely lie. Mind you, a girl I knew would give you her whole suicide-attention story if one asked about her scars, but I think she was "rare" (and thank god for that). Cutting is such a strange thing to me - I simply cannot grasp it, nor do I think I want to.

QUICK!! does anyone know what the two little theater masks are called? (link)
|
It is called the "comedy/tragedy" symbol. This comes from the ancient Greeks, as they pretty much originated what we know of as theater - and pretty much wrote either tragedies or comedies.

heyy, i started guitar a few months ago and im havin sum truble gettin the really fast, like quarter knotes and 1/2 quarter knotes down i just cant get my hand to go that fast! lol any1 hav any addvice?? (link)
|
To get fast, you have to start slow. If you don't have a metronome, I highly recommend you get one. Play slowly and controlled, keeping your notes regular. I suggest a starting beat of 90 (beats per minute). This is nauseatingly slow, and will drive you nuts - but I guarantee you'll find it well worth the effort. You do this until you can keep the rate of your notes constant and smooth - then you speed it up, maybe to 100... and you repeat. This is not something that you'll do overnight - but you could do it over a week or so. Just give yourself enough time and you'll get it down.
If you aren't familiar with them, I highly recommend you do this exercise with the Segovia exercizes. You perform the following patterns on all strings, then move up a fret and go to the next pattern: 1234, 1243, 1324, 1342, 1423, 1432; 2134, 2143, 2314, 2341, 2413, 2431; 3124, 3142, 3214, 3241, 3412, 3421; 4123, 4132, 4213, 4231, 4312, 4321.

i was borne in wilmar, minnesota and i live in california and like i was wondering if anyone new of a sight that gave you your birth records
*needed baby records*
(link)
|
You must get those from the hospital in which you were born. Having those open on a website would be a HUGE breach of privacy and cause yet another way people could perform identity theft. You'll have to find out the name of the hospital you were born at and then contact that hospital.

That's not much of a "best friend forever" then, are they? Find a friend who is less shallow.

Ok so I write a lot of poetry and I gave advice to someone about making a poem into a song but the poetry I write is very depressing and isn't really the song type. How do I come up with song lyrics of my own, and how do I put music to it (like acctually write out sheet music, idk where all the notes go)? (link)
|
I actually write the music and words at the same time. I find that they compliment each other better that way. Often, I will get a line or phrase in my head, and apply some melody to it. I build from there. Usually, I compose much of the song in my head, write down the lyrics, then hash out the music on keyboard, guitar, or bass.
Since it would appear you know little to no music theory, writing out the notes verbatim is not going to be very helpful for you. You are better off getting someone who can annotate sheet music to help you, or record the things you come up with, even if just on a computer microphone or tape player. You can go back to your recordings to figure out the music later.

this is all the other advicenators, because since you are all on this site like me, im thinking maybe you guys have had the same problem. obviously, we all like helping people. but what happens when we're the ones who need the help, but we feel we can't ask for it because we're supposed to be the one who has all the solutions. please dont tell me to write my problem on here, because obviously i know that. don't get me wrong...i LOVE giving people advice...but in the real world, have any of u guys ever felt like your not supposed to need any back in return? just a thought...let me know what u think. (link)
|
We aren't supposed to have all the answers. No one has all the answers... if we did, what else would there be left of learn or experience? Never feel that you can't ask something.

Okay, I'm the one that asked if I could get a question back after deleting it. Well, I think the title was something like Drinking and Death. And it was about how me and some friends got wasted at a party, and a few of us squeezed into a taxi, but my friend drove, and got into an accident, and was killed. And I asked how to get over my addiction to alcohol, and how to get over the guilt. I think I asked it in October, I feel kind of bad that I don't remember the exact date, but it was either late September, or October. (link)

I think my family is falling apart. My 10 year old sister has ADHD and she's always screaming and yelling at me and my parents. There are around 6 arguments a day on a bad day and 3 on a good day. Right now my parents are arguing over her. My Dad says he's going to leave soon. Everyone is always screaming abuse at each other and it's like she has the power over us. I'm really scared that one of my parents will leave and never come back. I don't know what to do. My sister sees a counciller but it's not helping. She threatens to do all sorts of things to us and she scares me. I really need help, please answer. (link)
|
I'm really not sure what you can do if things are that volatile. At best, try to calmly express your concerns to your parents separately, when they are not in a heated argument or screaming match. It sounds like more than your sister needs to see a councellor - the whole family could use some work. I don't really understand what a councellor can do for ADHD as it isn't a social condition but a chemical imbalance - thus it can be treated medically through a drug, assuming that she really is ADHD and not just conscientiously problematic.

Hey, I asked this to the site, but I didn't get any help, so I figured you could help.
I asked a question a month or two ago, give or take a week, and then a little after deleting our questions became an option, I deleted it. Now I've been wanting to get the question back, because I wanted to check the date I asked it, and I wanted to look at some of the answers. If I remember the title, is there a way of getting it back. I don't really remember who all had answered it, and I think you might have, but is there a way of getting the question back, or atleast finding it on somebody's column so I can view it? (link)
|
If you can tell me what the title was and what the body of the text likely said, I can probably dig it up for you.
|
Okay how do I change my user name because I really want to have a new nickname for my column. PLZ tell me how!!!!!!PLZ! (link)
|
As of right now, you cannot do that. Make a new column and start over. That's about the only thing you can do. Changing names in the database actually causes a few complications that most people would not think of, which is why we do not do it.
|
ok, why is everyone always asking 'does he/she like me?' i mean, come on, only that person knows! (link)
|
This is the answer usually ends up as something like "hey, why don't you ask them!"

I wear G-strings, and how can I dress out for athletics at shcool without everyone in the locker room seeing my butt?? Some people go into the bathroom stalls... i dont really want to do that though. (link)
|
you could alwasy just wear bikini or briefs instead... I mean, the underwear you wear is your choice, but if you are now suddenly uncomfortable with the thought of people seeing you like that, then what's the point?

my back has been hurting alot lately, im not sure if its how i sleep, or when i sit, i sometimes slouch. any advice?! (link)
|
Is this muscle ache or pinching pain coming from the spine? You need to differentiate, as you don't do the same things to fix them.
If pinching - pay very close attention to your posture and have people smack you upsie your head if you slouch (I'm only half-kidding... sometimes you will slouch and not be aware due to habit). There are certain exercises you can do, and stretches, but depending on the pain and where it is, some will do more harm than good - for this, a doctor will usually refer you to a physical therapist.
If muscle aching - examine your pillow, think about how soundly you sleep, think about how much caffiene you've had, and again, think about posture.
Note how posture comes up in both. If you have poor posture, you have postural muscles - usually small muscle groups that do thier thing automatically. But bad posture tends to make them weak, and if it gets bad enough, your skeletal muscles will try to compensate for your postural muscle's defficiencies. This will cause frequent back aches and lead to more severe issues like pain radiating down your arm and into your hands, or down your legs - this happens when skeletal muscles end up over-compensating and effecting the areas where muscles and nerves come together. In the arm, if the shoulders over-compensate, it ends up tugging on your tricept, which in turn will start to impinge your ulnar nerve - the funny bone. When the ulnar nerve gets impinged it will become inflammed, which impinges it further - and then it gets real fun! You lose feeling in your hand and your arm becomes seemingly weak because you can hardly feel things. And the shooting pain is great.
Why do I know this? Because this happened to me. It sucked.
Posture. Make sure yours is good. Mine was in high school, but went to crap during college and after. Not something you want to have to fix.
p.s. - if you've a friend with gentle yet strong hands, con them into giving back rubs - cheaper than seeing a massage therapist at $30/half-hour.

Ok. I want to lose 100 pounds or more in about 1 -3 years. Will this make me lose 100 pounds. For breakfast all I eat is cereal. Then I have gym for 4th period. Which 2/5 days I walk about a mile or more. For lunch I have a sprite and sometimes chips. Then for dinner I have whatever my parents make. Then after dinner I do 35 sit ups, 50 squats. 30 jumping jacks. Also, I do watch what I eat. I drink water most the time and sometimes Ill have a pop. I usally only have 1 pop a day. Is there anything else I should do to help me? And do you think that'll make me lose 100 pounds in 1 - 3 years? Ok thanks. (link)
|
Thing is, this is all up to your metabolism. Really, I think you need to add more physical activity. Sit-ups and squats are toning exercises. Jumping jacks are conditioning. Do more heavy conditioning, like walking longer, then upping that to jogging.

what is the real definition of cheating on someone?
just wondering (link)
|
To cheat on someone is to bacially have an affair. This means you have a commited relationship with one person, and then you go out and have a fling with another.

Hi can anyone help, I'm 26 yr old male and generally my complexion is ok, a few random minor zits but nothing terrible. However I have 2 reoccuring super spots. They flare up about every 2/3 months in exactly the same place (either side of my chin) and always both together. They start off as hard, sore, lumps under the skin and over a few days they become enflamed and red. Unlike other spots they don't eventually get a 'head' they just eventually die off, usually after 7 - 10 days. I wash with an antibacterial wash twice daily and use 'quinoderm' cream which is effective on most of my smaller spots.
Any ideas would be very gratefully received?
Thanks (link)

This sounds like either recurring eczema or psoriasis. You really need to see a dermotologist. Washing doesn't always help, and in some cases, can harm the area. Since it is on your chin and not elbows, fingers, etc, it is more likely to be eczema, especially if pathy. Eczema will flair up when weather patterns shift - especially moving into dryer weather. Stress can also effect it. Exfoliating cleansers like noxema can help. But really, for something that recurs that frequently, you should try to see at least your doctor, if not be referred to a specialist, just to make sure you're doing the proper thing and not creating a worsening medical condition.
