CrimsonAngel answered Saturday November 27 2004, 1:10 pm: You have to start out slow and gradually go faster. That way your figures get used to moving in that particualar pattern. Trust me it works, i go through that all the time. [ CrimsonAngel's advice column | Ask CrimsonAngel A Question ]
Rolexdude answered Friday November 26 2004, 3:45 pm: i play bass guitar and i play some pretty fast things sometimes. quarter notes should not be a problem for you. i say try to find shortcuts for notes. like instead of playing the 5th fret from another, play the next open string if it will work, depending on your tuning. just keep practicing and eventually you will get it. MFS answered Thursday November 25 2004, 11:11 pm: To get fast, you have to start slow. If you don't have a metronome, I highly recommend you get one. Play slowly and controlled, keeping your notes regular. I suggest a starting beat of 90 (beats per minute). This is nauseatingly slow, and will drive you nuts - but I guarantee you'll find it well worth the effort. You do this until you can keep the rate of your notes constant and smooth - then you speed it up, maybe to 100... and you repeat. This is not something that you'll do overnight - but you could do it over a week or so. Just give yourself enough time and you'll get it down.<br>

If you aren't familiar with them, I highly recommend you do this exercise with the Segovia exercizes. You perform the following patterns on all strings, then move up a fret and go to the next pattern: 1234, 1243, 1324, 1342, 1423, 1432; 2134, 2143, 2314, 2341, 2413, 2431; 3124, 3142, 3214, 3241, 3412, 3421; 4123, 4132, 4213, 4231, 4312, 4321.
