Question Posted Thursday November 25 2004, 11:02 pm
I collect coffee mugs. I have 804. I can't stop collecting them, every time I am out for dinner with my parents I cant' stop looking at coffee mugs. Mum accidently smashed one the other day and I just lost it, I was crying and screaming at her. I don't want to be like this, but I really love my mugs.
Peachgirly answered Saturday December 18 2004, 2:17 pm: I think that it may be OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder). Sorry not trying to scare you or anything but u may need to seek professional help like a doctor or psychiatrist if you wanna get over it or need it to be handled. But if u wanna continue collecting mugs itz ure choice. Good Luck!!!! :) [ Peachgirly's advice column | Ask Peachgirly A Question ]

Its ok to collect things, I used to collect action figures, but, I kinda stopped, well anyways, I think you should go to a doctor, in my honset opinion, before things start to get progressively worse with your obsession. I hope things work out Ok.

zapreth answered Friday November 26 2004, 2:24 pm: You don't seem to be obsessive compulsive, just OBSESSIVE. You have gone beyond the world of collecting into the world of overkill. Since I have this tendency myself, I understand the need to complete a set. I have not stuck with one thing though. I switch back and forth between things - Books, Anime DVDs, Chinese Antique Jade, keychains, ect... Your single minded obsession doesn't cost as much as mine, mugs are generaly much cheaper than $60 a piece jade figures shipped from China, but it seems to be interfering with your life. (Mine just bounces a check or two every now an then if I'm not careful.) You do need to seek help before it gets worse. I manage to keep my self sane by switching around like an addict with no access to their favorite drug, but help would be a good thing even for me. I won't seek it, but I should. You should too. Good luck, Mugster. [ zapreth's advice column | Ask zapreth A Question ]

dinoold answered Friday November 26 2004, 11:27 am: No..you just are a collector who loves her mugs...if you collect rare paintings and your mom ripped one everyone would be feeling bad for you.
804 is a lot..I might weed my hobby down to a certain type..but maybe you can build some shelves for the most of them and use the ones that will not bother you as much if they get broken. [ dinoold's advice column | Ask dinoold A Question ]
truadvice answered Friday November 26 2004, 12:09 am: well it does sound like you have a thing for mugs . i wouldn't exactly call you obsessive compulsive but i do think that you are a inpusilve buyer , you cant stop buying mugs . many people have this , theres something in your brain thats not telling you when to stop buying (mugs) . it is treatable but yours isn't terrible , some people are inpulsive buyers and go into 10s of thousand of dollers in debt but they cant stop buying things because it gives them a high that they feel that they cant obtain any other way , buying for them is like a drug . if this mug buying gets worse i would suggest that you talk to your doc and get some meds from your doc. it will make the connection in your brain to know when enough is enough . its really not a big deal , people take it alot if they have a over eatng disorder . onetallguy answered Thursday November 25 2004, 11:25 pm: um well....there is no real way of answering this question without offending you so here it goes....you really need to seek professional help. Im not physcologist....but what I would tell you to do is to get rid of all of the coffee mugs...i know that would be hard...but to get over the obsession is to get rid of its roots which would be the coffee mugs...either way...you are going to have to end up getting rid of them sooner or later...and if you go to a physcologist they will most likely say the same thing......hope that helps [ onetallguy's advice column | Ask onetallguy A Question ]
