Jack-O (1995)
advertisement Filter: Best Chronological Prolific Authors Loved It Hated It Hide Spoilers:

"Jack-O" was scripted by my good friend Brad Linaweaver, so I'm prejudiced in its favour. Low-budget film-maker Fred Olen Ray had a few minutes of footage of John Carradine sitting in a forest at night, and a bit more footage of Cameron Mitchell staring into a camera and telling a spooky story. Ray challenged Linaweaver to write a feature-length script using these snippets of footage. Carradine and Mitchell appear VERY briefly in "Jack-O", and not together.

"Jack-O" is a bog-standard spookfest. Jack-O-Lantern is a homicidal maniac who died in arcane circumstances but who still comes back for one night every year: guess which night. Yes, Hallowe'en. The crucial (dual) role in this film is a small boy in modern times who's related to Jack-O's first victim (also a small boy) from more than a century earlier on. When I saw that the child actor cast in these roles (Ryan Latshaw) is the son of the film's director (Steve Latshaw), I expected a vanity production. But young Ryan is actually a decent actor: in this film at least, his performance is better than his dad's directing.

I always expect zero production values in a film like this, so I was pleasantly astounded by the realistic 19th-century prologue. This was filmed in an historic village in Florida. Unfortunately, the first few minutes of the film look much, much better than anything afterwards.

There are several very attractive actresses in this film, notably scream queen Linnea Quigley as the heroine, and Catherine Walsh as a "bad girl" who MIGHT have supernatural abilities. Untalented Helen Keeling is attractive, but she reads her dialogue with one of the most bizarre accents I've ever heard.

There are some REALLY grotty special effects: notably the lightning (why didn't they use a stock shot?) and the scene in which one character gets electrocuted. I've seen more realistic electrocutions in Tex Avery cartoons. The post-dubbing of the soundtrack is worse than it really needs to be for this low budget.

"Jack-O" isn't very good, but it isn't nearly bad enough to be one of those Ed Wood-ish camp classics. I strongly recommend it as a study aid for those who want to learn "Bowfinger"-style filmmaking techniques. And some of the actresses are very watchable. Otherwise, "Jack-O" is a Joke-O. For thrills and chills, look elsewhere

I love my boy friend tons and he told me that he has strong feelings for me i wanna kiss him but i'm afraid of what my parents and friends would say.

My friends would probably say i'm a slut but i am worried about my parents as it would be my first kiss

I really need help

There are way sluttier things thsn kissing. Kissing your boyfriend won't make you a slut. If your friends really care about you than they won't call you a slut or anything else. And your parents don't have to know, unless you want to tell them. It's your relationship not theres.

Okay. So there's this guy at school, who's in tenth grade. His name is Tyler, and I'm in ninth grade. We both know we like each other, but I only met him 2 weeks ago. And he was telling my best friend that he wants to ask me out TONIGHT! But the problem is, I like him and all but I feel like things are moving way too fast. So how do I let him down easily without shoving him away?

Just tell him you want to take things slow. That doesn't mean you can't go out with him. You like him so him asking you out should be a good thing. Going on one date doesn't mean you have to get married to the guy. Just have fun.

I've been seeing a therapist for a year now after I was diagnosed with depression. The problem is, after I stopped taking my medecine, I haven't been improving. I'm wondering if, besides therapy, there is any other way to "get help"... they say depression doesn't go away on it's own, and I'm feeling pretty "alone" with the system right now. I'm not going to feel this way forever, am I?

what is TTS???
i saw it on questions and answers but i dont understand... can some one plz explain to me thx

TTS, or text-to-speech, is the digitized audio rendering of computer text into speech. TTS software can "read" text from a document, Web page or e-Book, generating synthesized speech through a computer's speakers.

TTS programs can be useful for a variety of applications. For example, proofreading with TTS allows the author to catch awkward phrases, missing words or pacing problems. TTS can also convert text files into audio MP3 files that can then be transferred to a portable MP3 player or CD-ROM. This can save time by allowing the user to listen to reports or background materials in bed, en route to a meeting, or while performing other tasks.

Even top screenwriting software includes TTS functionality so that a writer can assign different voices to characters in his or her script. The writer can then listen to the dialog to weed out stilted sentences. There are also personal uses for TTS. Behind on reading your email or favorite blogs? Listen to TTS files while you work out, jog, clean the house, or take the dog for a walk.

In the area of education, TTS programs provide a valuable edge, particularly for learning new languages. Speech engines are available in a variety of languages, including English, Spanish, German, French, and dozens more.

TTS makes a critical difference to those with disabilities such as poor vision or visual dyslexia. People with speech loss can utilize specialized TTS programs to turn typed words into vocalization, as does renowned astrophysicist Dr. Steven Hawking. Afflicted with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Hawking retains use of just two fingers which he uses with a proprietary interface. In March 2004, NeoSpeech's VoiceTextâ„¢ became Hawking's new TTS voice.

Software programs vary in quality, as do speech engines. Artificial voices can sound very robotic or quite natural. Microsoft's Windows XP includes a basic built-in TTS engine that can be upgraded with free online downloads.

Third party TTS programs can allow for great flexibility and, in many cases, much-improved voice quality. Most of these affordable programs come with a variety of voices to choose from, both male and female. Some offer voices with accents. For specialized fields of vocabulary such as medical terminology, a medical TTS program is required.

TTS vocalization has come a long way and will continue to improve. The art of designing software that can provide context-dependent pronunciation and inflection is a highly complicated, code-intensive task. Before purchasing a TTS program, listen to samples of the digitized voice(s). Unnatural sounding voices will distract from content and may be unsuitable for some purposes. Search engines will reveal a multitude of programs to choose from.

Instructions:

STEP 1: Buy tampons that are appropriate to your menstrual flow: light, average or heavy. STEP 2: Wash your hands with soap and hot water. STEP 3: Remove the tampon from the wrapper. STEP 4: Slide the applicator a few inches into the vagina (tampon side in), but not so far that you can't hold the outer of the two tubes that make up the applicator. STEP 5: Push the inner tube into the outer tube, releasing the tampon into the vagina. STEP 6: Slide the applicator out. STEP 7: Make sure the tampon's string remains outside the vagina. STEP 8: Wrap the applicator in toilet paper and throw it away. Do not flush it down the toilet. Tips & Warnings
Buy the lowest absorbency that works for you without leaking.
Insert the tampon gently; don't jam it in.
Wear a minipad or panty liner - not a tampon - during the lightest days of your period.
Tampon packages have directions inside. Read them if you need help.
Use a small amount of petroleum jelly if the tampon does not go in easily.
You shouldn't be able to feel the tampon in your body. If you can, you may not have inserted it far enough. Remove it and try again with a new tampon. Try inserting the applicator a little further into the vagina before pushing the inner tube of the applicator into the outer tube.
Change your tampon every 4 to 8 hours to avoid leakage.
To avoid toxic shock syndrome, do not keep the same tampon in for more than 8 hours.

Curly Hair

Hairstyles for Curly Hair
By Lisa Lach

Curls, tussles, waves, twists are back bigger than ever! Trend setting Celebrities like Christina Aguilera, Beyonce, and Alicia Keys at the Grammy wore sexy curls. Even Justin Timberlake did - but he can't help it.

It's a matter of convenience, less time doing your hair and more time having fun. Girls just want to have fun!

Prepare and get those curls bouncing, they're in!
For a loose sexy style curl scrunch your hair using a medium-to-strong gel. If you mix a little silk serum to soften, that's fine. Flip your head entirely over when scrunching. Try to bunch the hair in handfuls and keep the heat flowing between your fingers through your hair. After it's dry let it stay and cool for a minute, then flip it up.

To create loose curls, use a soft shine wax on the ends, if you want it to hold go in and curl with your finger any piece that did not curl so well, use some hairspray and Voila! If you want just a little wave use the soft shine wax from root to end.

If you want moving bouncing curls, invest in some hot rollers sold at Wal-Mart. Set your hair, it should take 10 minutes to heat and curl. Take the rollers out and before putting any product on it piece out the curls one by one. If you want a tighter curl, spray a little hairspray before wrapping the the hair on the roller. Spray the hairspray on your hair, not the roller itself. The harder the spray, the firmer it holds.

I'm a setter for my volleyball team, I'm in the starting six but recently I jammed my finger. Since it its bruised and swollen, my coach will not let me set until its better to prevent anymore damage to it. However, now I have to pass every ball I receive. My passing is decent, and I never knew coach had a problem with it, she never criticized me on it. Well, my dad (he coaches the team below us) has told me that both my coaches are threatening to take me out of the starting six because my passing isn't doing so well!

They never gave me a heads up, or much less hinted it. I'm working on getting my passing better, but I was curious if you had any tricks that might make it more consistent. I'm scared I'm going to lose my position, what can I do to improve my passing? Thanks!

How to Pass Any Serve:

Being able to pass is the key to winning. A good pass puts your team in the driver's seat, while a bad pass severely limits your options.
By Kent Syeffes

We've all been taught the basics about passing: Get to the ball, make a good platform, stay balanced. And with a nice easy serve, there's no problem doing that. But what about when the serve isn't so easy? Being able to pass the difficult serve is what separates the great players from the good.

The key to passing a tough serve is to get to the ball. You may have to forget about using correct form. Whatever gets you to the ball is what's important. Once there, concentrate on keeping your platform in front of you and your hips under you, and remember to keep your eyes on the ball.

Because these serves are difficult to return, your form isn't going to be perfect. That's okay if the end result is a good pass.

The deep corner serve

The Deep Corner Serve
You often see this serve when you're on the bad side and the other team has the luxury of serving into the wind as hard as they want. This serve tends to float up high and drop suddenly. Sometimes, you won't be able to touch the ball when you reach up for it, so you'll think it's going out-but it'll drop inside the court anyway.

To handle this serve, turn your body away from the net and extend toward the ball. First, you need to take a step back. If you're a right-side player, step back with your right foot to open your body toward the line (reverse this if you play the left). To keep your balance, make sure you don't lunge. As you reach to pass the ball, dip your left shoulder (or right shoulder, if you play the left) so your platform will angle toward the net. If you forget to dip your shoulder, you'll end up passing straight up. To get the ball up toward the net, swing and extend your trunk and use your legs. You should use your entire body to generate force. Finally, keep your head still to give you balance and help maintain your court sense.

In a perfect world, your pass should go up to the net. However, you're in an extended deep position, so your partner shouldn't commit to the net in case you make a bad pass. It's better to pass into the middle of the court, a little higher than normal but not so high that it becomes difficult for your partner to set. Of course, your final placement will depend on how good a setter your partner is. If you're playing with Scott Ayakatubby, go ahead and put the ball up to the net.

The hubby-wife

The Hubby-Wife
This serve is commonly known as the husband-and-wife because it splits a team right down the middle and leaves them saying, "You got it"/"You take it." The idea is that neither partner goes for the ball. To deal with the hubby-wife serve, you and your partner will both have to go for it. The secret to dealing with this serve is to have one partner slightly in front of the other when you both go for it. This has two advantages. First, if both partners aggressively pursue the ball, the risk of them colliding is minimized since they're in different planes. Second, if the player nearer the net misses the pass, his partner behind him can pick it up. Generally, the partner slightly in front is the cross-court player, and he is expected to pass the ball. This creates a small problem: His partner is still behind him in the fail-safe position. To deal with this, the rear partner has to aggressively push his way up to the net to set. If this means shoving the front partner out of the way, so be it. If you're the rear partner, you have to be just as aggressive pursuing the set as you were pursuing the pass.

The front partner can help by keeping an eye on his partner so he knows how the play is developing. If he sees that his partner isn't committed to taking the serve, the front partner can put up a normal pass. If his partner has committed and is now stuck behind him, he should put the pass more straight up and off the net. Getting to know what your partner will do in this situation is very helpful, and that's why practice is important.

The angle serve

The Angle Serve
This is the Adam Johnson special-a jump serve that slices cross court and drops in by the sideline. Because the ball drops so fast, you have to get away from the standard passing position. This is definitely not textbook passing. Generally, as a right-side player dealing with an easy cross-court serve, you step with your left foot to cover the distance, then swing your right foot around to square your body to the net. But you don't have the time to drag your right foot around with this serve. So you have to extend and lead with your left leg in an aggressive, strong movement, as if you're about to dive. Flatten your platform by dropping your left shoulder. Because your hips are twisted away from the net, compensate by shifting your shoulders toward the net. Don't worry about passing the ball backward, just try to get the ball up into the air. Your partner should be following you, so if you don't shank the ball, pretty much anything will be a good pass.

The short serve

The Short Serve
Mike Dodd is famous for this one. You don't want to dive to pass this serve. If you're diving, it means you haven't been paying attention (although even I have found myself diving on this serve). The key here is to use long forward steps while you bring your hips underneath your body. If your hips are behind your body, this causes your upper body to lean forward and sends the ball into the net. Because this serve is so short, you have no room for error in front of you.

Take long steps to get to the ball, then lunge forward on your last step and get down on one knee to get your hips underneath you. Make sure your body is upright, and keep your platform up and extended. It's okay to pass a little bit behind you because the physics of this move mean that since you're moving forward, the ball will travel slightly forward. Pass the ball high enough that you give yourself time to jump up, back up two steps and get into your hitting approach.

The high floater

The High Floater
Usually you see this serve when you're on the bad side and your opponent is serving into the wind. This is unlike the deep corner serve because it comes directly at you. When the ball is off to one side or the other, you can usually turn and move to it. But when it's over your head you can't. It's very difficult to turn and move in the exact opposite direction, especially once your weight is leaning backward, as often happens with this serve.

When you get really stuck with this serve, try using the tomahawk pass. Make sure the ball is truly straight on. If it's off to one side you're better off taking a step and passing it normally. Get your hands up and together early, otherwise you'll probably get called for a double hit. You need to show the ref that you've already created a single platform. Hold your hands together in either a loosely clenched fist-inside-a-fist or with two flat hands together, as if you're praying. Bend your wrists backward and point your elbows forward so your upper arms are nearly parallel to the ground. Contact the ball on the meat of your palms, not on your wrists as you would a normal pass. You won't be able to make a perfect pass on this play, but try to get the ball up and slightly forward.

How To Pass The Toughest Serves
by Bob Ctvrtlik
Let's set the record straight. I'm not the best jumper in the world, and I'm not the quickest guy who ever played in the Olympics. But I pride myself on my consistent passing ability, and that means putting the ball on the setter's head 95 times out of 100.

Passing is one of the most underrated skills in volleyball. These days, with so much emphasis on power, young players-especially big ones-spend most of their time practicing to become big bombers. There's nothing wrong with being able to bring the heat, but don't forget to spend some of that time working on passing reps, too. If you're not a big bomber, great passing will earn you a spot on the court. If you are and you can also pass, you'll be an extremely valuable member of your team.

Being a skilled passer may not get you the big headlines, but it will help you contribute to making the offense work efficiently. Every time you send a perfect or near-perfect pass to the setter, the chances of your siding out go up exponentially. You allow the setter to dictate the tempo and style of the offense, rather than limiting his choices with a poor pass.

Good passing makes everyone look good. Maybe it's just a coincidence, but I've always become good friends with the setter on every team I've ever played on.

CREATE A PERFECT PLATFORM

There are three basic types of underarm passes: straight away (left), to the side (center) and high and deep (right). The sketches on this page will illustrate proper form for each of them.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

Pepperdine Coach Marv Dunphy always told me that to form a good platform, your two arms should work as one. One mental picture that helps me is to think of my arms as a 2x4 piece of wood, straight and working together. The closer together you can place your arms, the easier it will be for you to pass well. In general, women tend to form a more natural platform than men because of their muscle structure. In my case, I had to stretch my shoulders and chest muscles for nearly a year and a half before I could bring my arms completely together. Remember, if your platform is correct, forget all the rest ... more often than not, the pass will bounce in a true trajectory.

If a ball is to one side or another, you need to get your platform at an angle by dropping your inside shoulder. If the ball is at your right, drop your left shoulder and vice versa.

A good way to practice forming a stable platform is the old stand-by pass the ball against a wall. Pick a point on the wall, pass 20 balls to your left side without stopping and then 20 to your right. This makes you more comfortable adjusting your platform and also teaches you focus.

Also, hit some balls off the wall and over your shoulder. Work on taking a drop step and passing to the same spot.

I like this guy alot, but he is a really big sweettalker, and he has kissed my younger step sister and everyone sayz he likes my other step sister. But people also say that he likes me. I hate him but every time i see him i get butterflies in my stomach and i start to like him again. What should i do????

Sounds like he's a player, a lot of guys like that are. And maybe he's not I don't know him, but do you want to go out with a guy who likes all of your siblings. Guys like him can pretty much make anyone fall for them. So don't, unless you actually do like him and you're convinced he actually likes you back.

Well , I know loosing your virginity is a big thing in all but why?
I mean yeah i know that its the risk of getting pregnant and getting disceases but other than that why is sex such a big deal?
Why do people think other people are slutty if they give a blowjob or get fingered?
It feels good, its not like your hurting anyone by doing it.
I just dont see whats so bad about it sometimes.
Please inform me, because ive done all that stuff and I dont feel bad or regret it at all, i thought it was very enjoyable.

Loosing your virginity is a big deal to some people because they believe you should be married or truly love the person you give your virginity to because you can only give it to one guy. Also you'll always remember the guy or girl you give your virginity to. It's the closest you can ever get to someone. People only consider the other stuff slutty if you sleep around or you barely know the person. If you don't regret anything you've done than good for you. Don't let anyone else make you feel as if you should regret it.

i really like my boyfriend and i have been going out with him for alomost 6 months and im starting to have feelings for another guy...but i still like my bf a lot...idk what to do..please help.

You have to decide who you have stronger feelings for. With this new guy it may just be a crush, that doesn't mean you'll want to break up with your boyfriend because of it, because crushes pass. You just have to find out which one you truly care for and want to be with.

This boy, ive known for about 4 years and we used to be neighbors,
we werent going out but we had sex and stuff [please dont make any rude remarks on that]
The sex and stuff wasnt too long ago, and I still like him.
He has a girlfriend and doesnt talk to me too much.
His best friend says he likes me[as well as his girlfriend] , but doesnt want me to know so he acts like he hates me.[hes mean to me].
When ever I am with/or around him , he flirts with me.
I dont know what I mean by flirt but he tries to get my attention and stuff.
I dont think he knows I like him still, But should I try to act hard to get or what should I do?
And do you believe he likes me or what?

I think he likes you, but acts the way he does because he's not sure if you like him back. Playing hard to get might just push him away.
So you should talk to him or tell him how you feel...

Why is it that i'm not allowed to change my belly button ring for 6 months after i got it done? Would somthing bad happen if i did (it's about a month later)? If i did it really carefully and made sure it was really clean.

If you change it out you may not be able to find the place it was pierced and it also starts to hurt, and it may close up or become infected if you don't do what they told you.

I don't understand why girls don't like the "sweet" or "nice" guys anymore..All my friends that are girls, like the "Bad boys" or the "Jocks". I like one of my friends, but she likes one of the "bad boy" guys...How can I get her to realize that I could probably be a better boyfriend than him...(14/M)

I honestly don't know why girls fall for the bad boy type, I tend to do that too. But here is where it works in your favor. Those type of guys usually end up being assholes, and end up hurting the girl in some way. Thats when girls realize that they should've gone for the other guy. It just sucks that they have to get their heart broken to realize it. So thats when you come in. Just be sure not to rush things.
