about
I am 48 years old (yes that's old compared to some of you).
I have worked in nursing and/or healthcare management positions for 24 years. Primarily OB, Neonatal, Mental Health, Occupational Health and Geriatrics. In Jan 2008 I started my own business to board horses and do equine/human education. I am also a certified dog trainer.
I've been around the block so to speak and seem to be always helping others. I've been told that the reason people seek me out for advice is that I am approachable and caring. But on the same token even though I consider the person's feelings. I tell it like I see it. I've dealt with people in trouble with the law, dysfunctional families such as those with abuse & marriage problems. Not to mention problems with employees and employers.
I don't ever claim to know it all, and always keep an open mind.

This is NOT a joke. I seriously think my house is haunted. Tonight I saw something (a black figure out of the corner of my eye) walk past my room. The reason why I dont think it was "just my eyes playing a trick on me" is because I felt a prescence, like there was someone there. When I looked down the hall, there was no one there. I asked my Dad who was watching TV in another room if it was him and he said, "No." And my Mom was sleeping in her room and no one else was home. Please help! This has happened 3 or 4 times and I cant sleep at night! What should I do?? Has this happened to anyone else? How did you feel less scared? :(
Yes, I have had this happen to me. I was a small child at the time, and no one believed me. They said I was dreaming! It was a dark figure too. I know I was not dreaming, and I was very afraid to fall asleep after that.
Move the furniture in your room, put your bed from east to west, hang up some new pictures and even add a plant or two. Take down or cover any mirrors on your wall. Get a night light that doesn't create shadows. If you have a dog, convince your parents that he/she needs to sleep in your room. This is what I did, and it worked for whatever reason, I never saw the ghost again.
alright, so i have been a veggie for about five years, and i didnt notice anything wrong. but in the past two years my body has been acting different. a year and half ago i was diagnosed with anemia. i had lower and low iron, and i had to take pills so i would have energy. i've been taking blood tests every 4 months since, and they say i've been getting better. Also i've really noticed, with in the past two years, hair loss, or thinning. i never really had thick hair, but it's gotten to be so thin and you can see it on the bathroom floor, it's really gross. it'll fall out when i brush it, wash it, blowdry it, straighten it. anything. i use heat protector aswell.
so my question is .. has anyone gone through this as well? mainly the hair thinning part. and who should i go talk to? when i talk to my mom my mom says "cause you dont eat" and i do. i eat a lot. and my doctor says "we'll run some tests" but we never do. is there a certain doctor that i should see? thank you.
This very well could be a nutrition problem, but yes you do need to see a Dr, because other issues like a thyroid disorder can cause thinning hair. The best place to start is a family doctor who can refer you to a specialist if that is what you need. If your Dr. didn't give you answers, switch to a different general practice physician. How much protien do you get in your diet? This may be a factor that you can discuss with the doc.

earplugs dont work very well. at least not the ones i have. is there a good brand? i saw this ad for headphones that block out sound but you cant sleep with them on. what can i do
The soft foam type ear plugs are much more comfortable. The rating on the package is by decibles of sound, so the higher the plug is rated the louder sound it will block. Make sure you are inserting the plugs properly. For the foam plugs roll them between your fingers and thumb into a narrow shape, use your opposite hand and pull up the top of your ear (pinna) which will open and straighten the canal, then put the rolled plug into the canal and hold it until you can feel it expanding or filling your ear canal. It will then form to the shape of your ear canal and be most effective. Another option is to have an audiologist or ear Dr. make custom ear plugs that will fit your ears perfectly.
hi, i just have a question about bumps on my breasts. well, they're not on my breasts but on my nipplles. they're tiny, prolly about a milimeter big.and theres quite a few of them. idk if this happens because i'm growing or something (14/f)? is it normal?
This does not mean you are lactating or about to produce milk. The bumps on the Areola (dark part of the the nipple) are called Montgomery glands which are oil producing glands that will make breast feeding more comfortable. Yes, they are becoming more noticable because you are maturing and growing. It's completely normal, and nothing to worry about.
Should I be worried if I am 39 weeks pregnant and it feels like something is tearing in my side?
Since you are 39 weeks, you are probably seeing your Dr on a weekly basis. Please ask him/her just to be on the safe side. I can't say directly if this applies to you but some women have what's called round ligament syndrome, or ligament pain.
Although common, it's not typically discussed in pregnancy books, and sometimes Docs forget to mention this because they are focused on the bigger issues of pregnancy.
See round ligament pain on this page for more info.

i started to cut in march and i stopped in june and now im starting again. it feels like i have to do it at least once a day. my friends get really upset when i cut because they dont want me to hurt myself. does anyone know what i can do to try to stop? please help me.
Cutting is like an addiction, it's difficult to stop, but not impossible. Of course it upsets people, partially because they don't understand. Most people who cut don't want to die, they just want their emotional pain to hide under the mask of the physical pain. The truth is, you could die though, either from an infection or a cut that's too deep and by hitting the wrong spot. You are probably well aware of that. The best bet is, if you don't want to tell your parents, make up an excuse to see your family Dr alone. Then talk to the Doctor or the Nurse. They can tell you where and how to get help. Don't try to do it alone.
hi.
i have had my dog for many years and he's been slowing down and has had a hard time standing up.
my question is..... does anyone know any types of food should i try giving him to get his bines stronger and speed him up a little?
thanks alot!!!!!!!
I give my older dog with arthritis, and my younger dog with hip displaysia Nutro (I think it's NutroMax) Natural, small bites, lamb and rice with glucosomine and chondroitin. I get it at Petco. It seems to really help. Also when they are having a bad day I give them a canine aspirin, the vet can advise you on the dose.
ok so i dont eat i cant sleep my hairs falling out and i dunno whats going on...even the thought of food disguists me and i cant sleep i try but i cant i sleep at like 9 in the morning every day and now i touch my head and id find some hair come out its starting to scare me im not sure what i have ...ive been having a hard time lately and been goin through some kind of depression im not sure if thats part of it ..ok thx Biii!
All your symptoms sound similar to the symptoms of a thyroid disorder. Please see your Dr and ask to have a blood test done for this.

I bought this whipcream that's in a can that has a nozzle. The first time i tried, the whipcream came out, and now it doesn't, but I have no idea why. It says if you bend the nozzle, it comes out, so I did it and last time it was perfectly fine, but this time, I can't get the whipcream to come out. Please help.
I had the same thing happen. There was no way I could get the whipped cream to come out before the can was empty so I assumed the nozzle was defective. You could always call the company, or if you have the reciept take it back to the store.
I have a diloacating knee cap its really gross i know i goes "out" when i run or kick or stand on one leg sometimes. I wear strong knee braces but this past weekend it did it while i was wearing them. My mom thinks i need to get surgury and so do i but we disagree when, she thinks it should be before soccer season so I don't injure it further, and i think i should do it after so I don't have to miss the season (I am a starting forward for varsity) When do you think would be the best time for me to get it?
Thanks
Apparently you can't keep your knee cap in place with a brace, and you need to do all those movements in soccer. Really, waiting on the surgery will not do your knee or your soccer game any good. You may as well have it done before the season. Talk to your Dr about recovery time and the activities that you will be able to do and when, and see what he/she says. The more information the better at this point. Best of luck!
My son has a goldfish that he won at a carnival last year. It lives in one of those 1 gallon tanks that has a filter. Suprisingly, this fish has almost doubled in size and is doing very well!
My question is, we are going on vacation for 7 days and I don't want him to starve...
I saw one of those automatic pyramid fish feeders at the store. Do those work? It says on the package that it feeds up to 20 fish in a larger tank...would it be overkill if I put that in his tank?
Actually with Gold Fish, it's better to under feed rather than over feed. They will eat all the food that is provided for them, which of course can lead to their demise. I am wondering if you look closer at the feeder, if it can be set to feed just one fish (especially since it says up to 20 fish). Here's one that you can check out at WAL-Mart

Im 15 and there is a chance im pregnant. if so the father would be my stepbrother. I want him to know its his child bout I wanna keep him a secret to everyone else because are intamantcy is unknown. How can I give him a chance to bond without family finding out?
Well, he can bond with the baby just like a typical uncle would do, and you may be able to pull it off that way for a while. It's not unusual for siblings to babysit for each others kids. Most people would think nothing of that. You are really in a tough situation. If possible you might want to seek advice from a counselor who can continue to see you after the baby is born and help with the adjustment of being a Mom.
alright well i have a lump in the back of my throat and i felt it to see what it was and it feels like a bone inside of my throat, it dosnt hurt or anything it just feels like a peice food is stuck or something, i'm kinda paniking so if anyone has any seriouse advice please answer thank you
It is quite possible you have a foriegn object stuck in your throat or even in your tonsil. As far as strep throat, that would hurt and you'd have other symptoms. The best thing to do is go to your Dr. If it is something that needs to be removed, he can do that, and try to minimize activating your gag reflex.
How do i make my cat stop pooping so much?
If the cat has intestinal parasites he might have diarrhea, so perhaps it is best to take him/her to the vet. You can try feeding a good quality dry food, and nothing else. Also it is not good to give a cat cow's milk.
ok, my like best friend, has told me weird things ever since we were in like 5th or 6th grade. Like about God. & she told me yesterday, that god told her to like walk through a closet & she would go to heaven. & she thought she saw a white sparkly light. & then she thought yesterday, late at night, she saw a red lightt. & like she thought shes seen like jesus before & stuff.. so my question is, is she like pyscho? or is she really seeing this stuff? like, it was just weird. & like her mom, takes sleeping pills to fall asleep, her dad is like weird.. he takes pills for everything. he tells her that shes fat, when she probaly only weighs like 90 pounds & shes 13. & like he just puts alot of pressure on his kids..
do you think that has anything to do with it? like she always gets so worked up. & i dont really know what to say to her.
It's quite possible that your friend has some deep seated wounds because of abuse from her parents. She may be looking for a release and fantasizing about ways to get to a better place. People who hallucinate believe what they are seeing is real--just like you are reading these words---it's that real to them!
The thing is, if she is convinced she sees these things, don't try to argue with her, there's no sense. Just agree. If she has an untreated mental illness, your words alone aren't going to change anything. It doesn't sound likely that her parents will help her, but perhaps an adult can talk to her Mom about this and convince her to get an evaluation. If she is religious..call her pastor and explain all this to him. That may just be the key to getting her the help she needs.
Ok so heres whats happening,
a little while ago my uncle lost his job, went in to depression and said he was going to commit sucide and then my friend started to slit her wrists and i'm getting scared. It's makeing me sad and i don't want to have to deal with her of even be around her cause i can't take the stress but at the same time i don't want to loose my friends.
If i don't hang out with them they will tell me i'm becomeing antisocial and thats not what i want i'm only 14 and this is way to much for me to deal with please dose anyone know what i should do? Or a way to relax
thanks,
becca
You don't have to be around these people to help them. Tell a trusted adult, like your parents, another relative...call the police. Let people know that you know about this.
This is a lot for anyone to deal with yes, and if it causes you to be stressed out don't be afraid to remove yourself from the situation. To let go of your friend's pain, does not mean to stop caring about them. The people that are all doom and gloom all the time are energy vampires (in fact there is a book like that) They drain the life right out of you! Don't let this happen--or you will end up feeling down too!

Okay so Idk what is wrong with me. Like Im convinced bad things are going to happen to me.
like when I'm 16 I cant get my license but i think to the future and picture myself getting into a car accident and like i actualy believe that this is going to happen to me.
And i read a story in seventeen magazine about a women getting murdered in her house and i think to myself oh that will prob. happen to me. like im convinced that something bad is going to happen. Like every bad situation I hear I make myself think its going to happen. Idk why but I dont think its healthy, and i freak myself out. Like I seriously think im going to prob. die in a car accident when i can drive.
please help!
You are right, it's not healthy to live in fear. The media is full of doom and gloom, for some reason people want to hear about the bad things that happen in this world, and not the good things. This does tend to brainwash us into thinking that evil is lurking around every corner. In addition you are now maturing and realizing that as humans we are not going to live forever.
If you feel as if you are in a panic over these thoughts or if they prevent you from doing things you should normally enjoy, you should see a Dr. or a counselor for a treatment plan.
In reality, these thoughts or scenerios that are playing in your head may not be all bad. This shows that you have forward thinking, something that a lot of teens don't have or don't use. Try to make something good come out of your fears. For instance, take drivers ed, always obey the laws of the road and wear your seatbelt. This will greatly reduce your chances of a serious accident. If you are still thinking about the murder, keep a cell phone by your bed and put an alarm on your door. Odds are for you, not against you. While so many people do get injured or murdered...the majority don't. If we spend our days thinking about when and how we will die, we will never live!
Best Wishes :-)
I'm going to put this as clean as I can.
I had sex, and was giving the guy a hand job before hand and didnt finish him off.
He penetrated me a few times before putting on a condomn.
I haven't missed a period yet, but I should be getting it any day now.
But I've not felt well at all in the morning, my breasts have been really sore, plus I've been neasuated somewhat.
I'm not sure if it's possible I could be pregnant? I need some help here, and asap..thanks.
It is possible that you are pregnant, yes. However, you just need to be patient and wait a few days and see if you get your period. I know there's this huge cloud hanging over your head, but really at this point there is nothing you can do to change anything. If your period is a week late or so, then take a home pregnancy test. If it is positive be sure to get medical care. If it is negative, perhaps the scare is enough to convince you to use a different form of birth control. Best of luck.
I saw people's answers to somebody's questions about teeth whitening with baking soda, I would like to try that. Do I just put the powder on my toothbrush, or put it on my toothpaste. How often can I do think without harming my teeth?
Put a small amount of baking soda in a cup, then get your toothbrush wet and press the bristles into the soda. It will stick to the bristles. Really this is hard on the enamal on your teeth,so be careful and scrub too hard. I wouldn't do this more than once a month.
i can only concentrate at night beacuse i've stayed up for a long time.
when i wake up i feel like ive been hit by a truck
i have bad allergies, never exercise and still dont sleep well
how do i fix my sleep schedule?
Drink a lot of water (6-8 eight oz glasses a day) this will help with your concentration and allergies. If you aren't treating the allergies you should consider doing so, because allergies can cause sleep problems and make you feel really rotten when you wake up.
The key to turning a sleep schedule around is to go to bed 15 minutes earlier each night, until you get to the bedtime that suits your schedule best. Then you want to stay with that bedtime frequently...as part of a routine.
