What is that piercing called when it's right above your lip off to the side (kinda where Marilyn Monroe had a beauty mark)? (link)
I'm pretty sure that's called a Monroe. I'm not totally sure, because I don't really keep up with these things...

I saw a girl and a guy who each had one (I guess they were dating, and thought they'd be cute and have matching facial piercings). On the guy, it looked wicked awesome. The girl just couldn't pull it off. It was not working for her.

I don't have an opinion one way or the other about them. I wouldn't get one, simply because... I don't think I could get away with that. I don't think I'd want to date someone who had one - I mean, that must be uncomfortable when kissing, right? But on some people, it looks great.

I’m 13, in the 8th grade, and have a guilty pleasure. I’ve been raised in an intellectual household, with both parents having a Ph.D. Generally, I don’t watch T.V. So I was at my friend’s sleepover birthday party with 7 other girls, and she rented the First Season of the O.C. We watched 4 episodes---and I liked it! I feel kind of guilty, because I know that technically, the show is for advertising and eye-candy with a plot. But I can’t help it. That blonde what’s-his-face that stole a car and set a house on fire is really good looking. And it keeps me at the edge of my seat. Now I’m addicted! What should I do? Am I shallow for liking this?

Thanks

Cheyenne (link)
Cheyenne,

I do not believe you are "shallow" for enjoying a television show. It is perfectly normal for a thirteen year old girl to enjoy watching a particular show.

I understand your delimma, being raised in a house with a bunch of smart people. ;)

I don't really live in a situation like that. Yes, my parents both went to college, but my dad only has a bachelors (in finance) and a masters degree (in accounting) and my mom has a masters (elementary school teaching). Yes, they are both intelligent enough, but I have higher hopes. I'd love to have a Ph.D. I'm willing to work for it, too. Television does not play a large role in my life, simply because I have no need for it. I enjoy watching Kent Hovind DVDs, [Kent Hovind is a Creationism Evangilist. He's funny, but really smart, so he's fun to watch. And I learn stuff from him.] but that's about the extent of it. I never watch MTV or MTV2. I don't watch ESPN or Disney or Spike or VH1. At rare times (when a special is on or something) I'll watch RFDTV (it's a farming channel. Alot of horse stuff.) or Discovery Science / Discovery Health / History channel. That's just my way.

Hundreds of girls - and guys - love the O.C., and other reality-based TV shows. Some girls are, in fact, infatuated with characters from some of these shows. I don't mean a simple "Yeah, he's cute." kind of thing, I mean - truly infatuated. Posters, books, stickers, magazines, anything that has to do with that character. It's crazy. But normal. Quite normal.

You shouldn't feel bad about liking this TV show, unless it is hindering your school work. Then record the show and watch it after you've done your homework. :)

Hi . For spainish i have to make a visual-poster for the day of the dead. I have NO IDEA what to do. It has to look mexican .. im planning on using either white or black psterboard. Any ides what to put on it ? Something easy and inexpensive .. its due tomorrow ( no im not a procrastinator i just got it friday and i was gone all yesterday and friday night ! ) At the top il prbly put dia de los muertos in red letters .. and i have to write a paragrph describing the difference between halloween and day of the dead .. but im not worried about that . I think theres something with a bride and groom skeletons right ? so maybe i can draw them or something ? PLEASE give me some ideas !! thanks ! (link)
I'm not an expert on the Day of the Dead, however, you might want to try these websites. And yes, the bride and groom skeletons are a part of the tradition. Sort of like American jack-o-lanterns or trick-or-treating. Just part of the day.

I think drawing - or perhaps painting - the bride and groom skeletons would be a wonderful idea. Or perhaps make them out of a collage, using different colored bits of paper. Or, if you don't have that much time, at least print a few pictures of them off the Internet. ;)

I was due for my period about 10 days ago and it sitll hasnt come...is this bad??and when will it come again?
(i have had it for about 3 or 4 years now)

rate 5's for anything

ohh and im not pregnant (link)
Even though you've had it for a while, you're still young and you still have fickle hormones. It probably won't come this month (since it's almost two weeks late); but watch out for it next month. It might come at any time, though the most likely time will be next month on the day you usually start.

If you've started exercising heavilly, that could be the cause of your skipping. If you changed your eating habits dramatically, that will also cause you to skip a period. If you're under a lot of stress, that can cause you to skip. There's probably nothing to worry about though.

what is the best kind of straightener?

ive had 2 different brands and both of them have at some point stopped heating up (the light goes on, so i know the power is on)
the first kind i had was a ceramic tools and the second was a vidal sassoon.

any ideas why they keep dying on me? and suggestions for a good ceramic straightener? (link)
Okay, I use a CHI 1'' Ceremic Flat Iron. It works like a charm!! It's really good... used by alot of hairdressers and stuff. It's a bit pricy (range is between $65 - $112), but it's really good. It heats up in 10 seconds or less, gets up to 450 degrees (or something like that), will automatically shut off if left unused / unattended / gets too hot. Which is very good. Very. I've accidentally left it on before and left the house, and when I return, it will have turned itself off. Once I left it on while I was in my room doing school, and after about four hours, it turned itself off. If I want it back on, all I have to do is flip the switch. :)

One possible reason the other two died on you was because of a circuit shorting? Or maybe they were just cheaply made... no offense or anything.

Check e-Bay for a CHI straightener. That's where I got mine - brand new, in the box, the whole shabang - for like $85. Which is relatively cheap compared to how much it is if you buy it somewhere else.

ok, im a 16 y/o guy, and i've never had a health class (reason i'm asking.) What are some signs that a girl IS NOT pregnant? like, is her period not the same? my girlfriend is 15, and we dunno. we had sex about 3 weeks ago, and we were woried about it. she's on her period right now, but does that mean she is FOR SURE NOT PREGNATE
?
(link)
Yes, if she is on her period, she is not pregnant. Absolutely not pregnant.

Use protection (preferably a condom and / or the Pill) next time. Read up on the warning signs that a girl is or is not pregnant.

You are not a father-to-be. Don't worry.
-FunnyCide

omg halloween is this monday and i have noo idea whati want to be please help!!!!Not slutty!!
14/f (link)
Well... I don't know about you, but I'm not doing "Halloween." I mean, I'm fourteen - so are you. Isn't that a little old? Sure, I went to a Masqurade Ball... but not tick-or-treating. If it's a party, sure, but otherwise... eh...

Ideas :

- Cheerleader
- Hippie
- Valley girl
- Flapper
- Witch
- Cowgirl
- Nerd
- Piglet
- Queen of England
- Mascot
- Ballerina
- Disco Queen
- Barbie Doll
- Swing dancer

... I don't know otherwise. I'm sure there's something. Look at Target, Wal-Mart and stuff.
-FunnyCide

whats "come hither"?? (link)
In the old English language, primarily Pre-Elizabethan, such as used in Shakespeare, "come hither" would mean "come here."
-FunnyCide

a bit long i say ok well im 14/m and i have asked this question what do girls look for in guys well i looked at the answers and i was most of them but im not the brightest star in the sky so i have a two part question 1 why are girls so materalistic about guys appearance and 2 do most girls want all of the other things for the being cute part? well i need help so read it please i beg of you! (link)
One, I am NOT materalistic. I am a fourteen year old female, and I do not care if the guy that I'm going out is Mr. Hottie or not. I would rather him not be Mr. Hollywood and have a sincere heart and genuinely like me for who I am than for him to be good looking and shallow.

Yes, it is okay if the guy is cute, but it also can be bad - if he's really cute, other girls are going to like him too. :(

I would rather a guy really honestly like me for who I am, not what I look like. I've been called hot (Gag me!) and pretty, but also ugly. However, I would rather someone really look on the inside and see who I am, not just want to go out with me because I have a pretty face (which isn't true anyway).

I want a guy to be :

- Honest
- Fun
- Sweet
- Sense of humor
- Gentlemanly
- Caring
- Helpful
- Loving
- Gentle
- Smart
- Playful
- A Christian
- Protective

Honest is important because, duh - why would you want to go out with someone who isn't truly devoted to you and would cheat on you?

Fun is important because you need to be able to laugh with the person you're dating. You've gotta be able to have a good time with them, otherwise, what's the point?

I like guys that are less "macho" and more sweet and sensitive. The whole macho thing turns me off. Although it's kinda funny to watch two guys bicker like three year olds, it does not make me want to go out with them.

A sense of humor is vital because I'm extremely sarcastic at times. The guy has to know when to laugh, and to know that I will make jokes about them (and myself), but none of it is done in a mean spirited way.

I want a guy who is gentlemanly. I want him to offer to open doors and carry my book. He should offer to let me go first, or if I prefer, lead the way.

I need a guy who cares for me and loves me. If he's not worried about me when I've got the flu, then he probably isn't going to work out for me. I want him to love me, and me to love him. I don't mean love like "I love Vanilla Pepsi.." or "I love chocolate ice cream..." -- I mean "I love you so much that I would die for you."

Helpful guys are always appreciated. I just really like it when a guy offers to help me out.

Gentle. Back to the whole macho thing. I love animals - and if the guy I'm dating is too rough around animals, or rough around me, I don't want to date him. Gentleness is key.

I don't want my boyfriend to be a genius - he doesn't have to be the world's biggest math fan, or the first 15-year-old Ph.D - I just want him to have enough smarts to not fail school and have common sense.

I want my guy to be playful. Not in a weird or perverted sense, but the kind of guy that I can play on a swingset with and he doesn't think I'm terribly geeky; or I can play CandyLand with him and he doesn't think I'm babyish. Yeah.

I will only date Christian guys because the Bible says not to be unequally yoked with unbelievers. Some girls do not have this priority, but I do.

Protective is important to me. Why would I want to go out with a guy who would let someone beat me up? I need someone who will protect me with all of his ability.

As you can see, appearance was not on my list. Sure it's okay to be cute, but what matters more is how attractive you are on the inside - not the outside.

Your parents are more thank likely trying to protect you. They aren't trying to keep you from having fun or meeting new people - they're just trying to protect you.

Face it, he's nineteen, you're sixteen. Although that's only three years, that's a fair maturity gap. Unless you're really mature for your age (or he's immature), it's unlikely that you'll get along for extended periods of time. Not only that, he's considered an adult now - you're still a minor. It's illegal for you to be in a sexual relationship with him until you're eighteen.

You also met him online. You can't know for sure that he's nineteen. He could be 25 and sound young, or could be 15 and sound old. There's no way to really know. Unless you've seen this "fancy construction place" he works at, you don't really know if he works at it or at Mc Donalds. There's just really no way to tell, and your parents realize this. They're just trying to protect you, your innocence, and your heart.

Honor your parents decision, but maybe you could get them to meet this boy (if you think he's worth it). That would mean he'd have to come to your house, blah, blah, blah. But if he's worth it - you should get your parents to see that.

ok i jus went to the bathroom and i whiped and there was very little blood and like 4 days before it was very itchy down here so could that be just a cut and i have like 2 pimples on my face hat showed up about 2 days ago and some people say you break out before you start your period so i was wondering if i am starting plz help i rate 5s (link)
You probably are starting. It's good that you saw the blood. Use a pad now, just to be sure it's really your period, not a cut. Most girls do break out before their periods, yes. You don't have anything to really worry about though. :)
-FunnyCide

What's wrong with me?
My parents think I'm strange and that I have something weird going on with me. "I have weird habits and a weird way of thinking."
Habits as in...counting the number of cracks I've stepped on, the times i circle around something, the seconds im in somewhere and if its not under a certain time then i..feel the need to start over..and then im yelled at when im still doing it ...I dunno. People think I'm retarded X___x I didn't notice that i was doing this stuff... i just do it because...its what i've always been doing..then people pointed it out. Its like ringing the doorbell a couple of times..before entering because..its just..there. I always think about something. I'm afraid of pain. I'm afraid to do P.E. in class. I'm afraid of running..tripping and landing on the ground..seeing blood or having my arm bend the wrong way or having my fingers crushed or having those bent the wrong way. It makes me sick. I don't want to twist my ankle or have a ball hit my face..because it might hit my ear piercings and those might rip out and hurt. I've got glue on eyelashes and I've just recently thought..what if i get the glue in my eye? My eyes will start to water and then i might get eye problems...might have to go see a doctor...and then i get awful images.. I dunno. I always worry a lot. Also.. my little sister was going across the street to a friends house...in my head I heard a loud crash..and had images of her lying in the street covered in blood and...blah. My boyfriend had this safety pin in his mouth...and it was open and for about 20 mins..he was talking with it still in his mouth..and all i could think about is.. what would happen if it cut him...or if he swallowed it and it got stuck..and i couldn't do a thing about it because there was no adult around.. argh. Am I stupid? (link)
YOU ARE NOT STUPID! I repeat, YOU ARE NOT STUPID! Remember that. However, you may have OCD [Obsessive Compulsive Disorder] and Anxiety Disorder. Those are not disorders that mean mental handicaps, it simply means that you're naturally a worrier and compulsive.

Everyone does "weird" things. Trust me. I would know. For instance :

My boyfriend always takes his shoes off before he goes into his room. He will also sit and watch the clock, counting the seconds in groups of five. (One, two, three, four, five. One, two, three, four, five.)

I enjoy studying things that are 'weird,' and usually have something to do with death or torture or sickness. IE : Holocoust, Polio, Black Death, Roman Government (haha), Leprosy, Treacher-Collins Syndrome, etc. These things are not "normal" for a teenaged girl to study.. in fact, it's not normal for a teenaged girl to want to study something outside of school. Haha... although I do not sit and count the seconds on a clock, I do like to watch my lava lamp. I'm an obsessive-compulsive reader though. If it has words on it, I've probably read it at least once. The first thing I did when I got an account here on Advicenators was read the FAQ. I read nutrition facts on cans, the warnings on nail polish remover, the information packet on super glue.. and so on. I feel the need to read it myself. I do not learn if someone else reads it to me though. I can't listen to the directions for the Algebra lesson, I need to read it myself in order to understand it. I even have a hard time with books on tape. I can't stand to take off shoes without untying them. I don't like to eat when my hair is down, and once I put a jacket / hoodie on, it is quite unlikely that it will come off.

You're basically the same way - just a little more so.

As for the worrying, that's normal. Although yours is a tad bit extreme, it's still worry. You think ahead and plan for the worst, as in PE class - you think you'll fall and break your leg or something. Try to relax and come to terms with your fears - it is very unlikely that you'll break your leg during PE class, right? Have you ever seen it happen?

I don't like it when people put safety pins in their mouth. What an oxymoron, eh? It's not really safe if it's in your mouth! Next time, tell him to take the thing out of his mouth. Try learning the Heimlich Manouver. I don't think that is spelled correctly, but it's definitely worth knowing. And CPR. Maybe take a course in CPR, I think the Red Cross does them; so do most hospitals.

I know you're worried about your sister, but she'll be fine. There's little chance that she will be hurt.

Glue in your eyelashes? Weird place to put glue. Don't put it there next time. ;)

A fear of doctors is quite normal. I absolutely detest doctors. I hate the thought of going to one. I have injured my knee though, and have needed to go see doctors. I was so terrified. Not because I might have to go through physical therapy or worse - have surgery, I was scared that I'd have to put on the cheesey little paper robe. YES! I ADMIT IT! I am shy and do not like to be in anything less than knee-length shorts and a t-shirt. I don't even like tank tops! I was so afraid. I wore shorts, even though the high was like 57, just so there'd be less of a chance of me needing to .... uh, take off my shorts, you know. Then I had to have an MRI... I was trying to do Algebra while waiting, but it was useless - I was so afraid. I was afraid that I'd be forced to put on the paper robe for the whole time of the MRI. [ It lasted about 30 minutes, which would be a very long time in just paper!] However, I was allowed to keep my shorts on, I only had to take my watch off and my shoes off. The last time I went to the doctor, being actually sick, not just in pain, I had the flu and pneumonia. I would rather jump into an outdoor pool during the winter than go to a doctor. Oh yeah.

I'm not as afraid as you are of things though. Once I put paperclips in my ears instead of earrings. That was cool. It hurt a little, but not bad. I'm just a little weird like that.

Blood does not bother me. I can watch Dr. G : Medical Examiner on the Discovery Health channel while eating supper.

I'm a little afraid of running and tripping on my own shoelaces. I always make sure my shoes are tied tightly and knotted well. This fear is because once I was running (in the road, no less!) and tripped on my shoelace, which had come untied. I scraped my knee badly, I even had a small rock stuck in it. (It was a gravel road) But it wasn't anything the camp nurse couldn't fix... yes, I did that at camp. Smart, eh?

But the blood didn't - doesn't - bother me.

I could not be a cutter though. I just... I don't handle pain very well. At all. I won't play paintball with a friend of mine because, DUH! -- it would hurt! A different friend tried to convince me to try skateboarding. I used his board, and mastered the whole going straight and turning thing, but I am WAY too scared to try kick flips and ollies and stuff. I'm too scared I'll fall on my butt and break my tail bone, or land on my knee and break or dislocate my knee cap. However, I love horses. I own five and ride as often as my knee permits. [which, lately, is not very often] Horses are dangerous. I'll admit that. I've fallen off many times. I've been bucked at, bucked off, reared at, kicked, bitten and stepped on. But I still love the half-ton creatures. I don't know why. It's just a pre-disposition. When I do ride, I ride bareback (without a saddle) and I only use a halter and a lead rope (nothing strong enough to control most horses, it's what you lead a horse with). See, you're not all that weird. I'm weird too. We can be weird together!

You should research OCD and Anxiety Disorder to find out more. Maybe you could see a doctor -- that will help you fully understand why your brain has these pre-dispositions and how to control them. :)

Best wishes,
-FunnyCide

i was due for my period 5 days ago but it still hasnt come..is that normall?

(i have had it for 3 years) (link)
Yes. Even though you've had it for three years, your period is still subject to fickle hormones - you might miss sometimes. It might be late, or not come at all this month.

If you're sexually active and do not get your period soon, get a home pregnancy test to be sure you're not pregnant.

k for halloween i'm being a cowgirl. i have a cowboy hat and stuff but i'm just not sure how i should wear my hair. it's not very long.. it just touches the top of my shoulders when it's straight. i was wondering if i should put it in pigtails or if i should just leave it down? what would go with the 'cowgirl' theme more? thanks (link)
Stereotypically, 'cowgirls' have pigtails, usually braided. However, in real life, 'cowgirls' will simply pull their hair back in a low ponytail, keeping it out of the way. A ponytail is effective and quick, not fancy and gets the job done. Some might even leave their hair down, and wear a bandana to keep it out of their face.

Hi

i was wonderin if these types of bows would look weird in your hair
http://babygiftsupply.com/prodimg/bow-colors2.jpg

because some people wear bows like that but their like..different and i don't know where to get them!! do any of you know? and where can you get those little hair clips that are plastic and sparkly and they have them in different colors and their like little birds and flowers and stuff like that..if you please let me know where to buy the 1)bows 2) the hair clips ..please i really want them they are soo cute!! ♥ thanks a lot! (link)
Those ribbons are cute, but I think they might make you look fairly young... much younger than you are. However I can tell you where to purchase the other items.

Bows : Wal-Mart. I've seen alot of young (and older) teenaged girls wearing ribbons tied in a bow around a ponytail holder. To do this, just go to Wal-Mart, get half a yard or so in your favorite colors of ribbon, then tie them around a ponytail in your hair. Wal-Mart also has pre-tied bows that are attatched to clips and stuff. So does Dollar General, Dollar Tree etc.

Clips : Wal-Mart, Dollar Tree, Dollar General, Target, Claire's. Claire's is more expensive, but better quality. I would go with Wal-Mart or Target because it's cheaper, and won't fall apart immediately.

I had the chicken pox over the last week. And now all the dots (especially on my face) have turned into dark(almost black) scabs. I tried to cover them up with make-up but it didn't work to well. Trust me, It's not acne...it's the chicken pox. Is there to cure these faster? Any specific lotion or any particular make-up brand that will cover them up? (link)
I'm not sure about a make-up that will cover it well, besides perhaps CoverGirl or something. I'm not real big in the make-up ward. However, I do know something that will help those scabs go away.

Polysporin.

Put it on each scab twice a day (after you wash your face at night and when you get home from school). It's basically super strong Neosporin. Like... Neosporin 5x! Haha. It really works. I have a ... well, a violent cat. (She can be sweet at times, but that's off the topic.) Sometimes she'll scratch my face. (Yes, sweet cat.) When that happens, just a little Polysporin and about two days (three for really bad cuts) and there isn't any more scab. Works the same for acne scabs. Pretty cool. It's not expensive (maybe $5), and it can be found at most any WAl-Mart, CVS, Rite-Aid, Walgreens etc.

Don't scratch the scabs off. That'll only make them worse. Be sure to wash the makeup off of them as soon as you get home from school. :)

Ugh, you have no idea how fed up I am with periods.. I get depressed because I get them. Basically my question is, is there any chance that I can make the flow a little less and is there any way I get rid of periods by surgery?? By like removing the eggs or something.. Please help!! I just want to die.. grr (link)
There is a surgery that completely removes your overies, and stops the periods. However, this surgery leaves you infertile - you couldn't ever have babies. I'm assuming you're still in your teens, in which case you probably don't have children. I know periods suck - big time - but I want to have children when I'm older.

You can be put on birth control; that regulates your periods and makes them lighter. For most girls, they only get their period every three months and it lasts only about 5 light days. However, this dosage of birth control isn't enough to protect you sexually; if you are considering becoming sexually active, you'll need a higher dosage than what the doc will give you for regulating your periods.

ok so there's this guy at church and i think i like him.. and i think he likes me because my friend asked him and he said yes. but i dont know if i should go for it because two other people at church dated and they ended up hating each other. i really like him... hes sooo sweet! and i dont think it would ruin our relationship.. but im the kinda girl who goes out with someone for a week then breaks up with them and i dont wanna hurt him.. ahh what should i do?? (link)
If you like him, then usually I'd say go for it. But if you really think that there's a good chance of you breaking up with him after only a short period of time, I'd say just wait. You don't want to hurt him, and that probably would. You definitely wouldn't want to end up hating him (and him hating you). If you think the relationship will last, go for it. If the relationship is going to be short lived, steer clear.

What is fasting all about, and how's it done?
I know loads of girls at school that are talking about fasts all the time (not that I'm thinking of starving myself or anything for the sake of being thin, I'm just curious)

I heard my friend tell her cousin she was gonna do a 5 day fast and her cousin asked her how she lasted so long on a fast so I'm guessing it's got to do with not eating.
(link)
Generally fasts are assosiated with religion. Basically you choose not to eat for however many hours or days. When Christians fast, they use this time of not eating to draw closer to God; they pray and stuff. As for non-religious people who fast, I'm not sure what they do. They just ... don't eat, I guess. When someone fasts, they give up food for a certain period of time. Some people try to go without drinking, but that's unhealthy. You can get very dehydrated and sick.

If it's not for a religious reason, it's basically because they want to say they're "strong enough," or they're anorexic. Basically starving themselves.

Some people fast where they only give up certain foods, or they will only eat one meal a day, and only light foods (like chicken broth or jello).
