What is fasting all about, and how's it done?
I know loads of girls at school that are talking about fasts all the time (not that I'm thinking of starving myself or anything for the sake of being thin, I'm just curious)
I heard my friend tell her cousin she was gonna do a 5 day fast and her cousin asked her how she lasted so long on a fast so I'm guessing it's got to do with not eating.
UWishUHadMyHemi answered Wednesday October 19 2005, 11:46 pm: fasting is where you dont eat... at all. it is extremely unhealthy because your body doesnt get the nutrients that it needs.
yes, most fastings are religious, but they only fast while the sun is up... youre allowed to eat after sundown. but some people (especially girls) fast to loose a few pounds so they look better in that new shirt. but this is the WRONG way to go about things. a healthy diet and good exercise is the healthier choice
FunnyCide answered Wednesday October 19 2005, 5:06 pm: Generally fasts are assosiated with religion. Basically you choose not to eat for however many hours or days. When Christians fast, they use this time of not eating to draw closer to God; they pray and stuff. As for non-religious people who fast, I'm not sure what they do. They just ... don't eat, I guess. When someone fasts, they give up food for a certain period of time. Some people try to go without drinking, but that's unhealthy. You can get very dehydrated and sick.
If it's not for a religious reason, it's basically because they want to say they're "strong enough," or they're anorexic. Basically starving themselves.
Some people fast where they only give up certain foods, or they will only eat one meal a day, and only light foods (like chicken broth or jello).

Sometimes the rules are changed so you can eat/drink during a short period of time, or can still eat some things. [ cynicalladvice's advice column | Ask cynicalladvice A Question ]
EmmyGurl answered Tuesday October 18 2005, 5:39 pm: Fasting is when you hardly eat anything, or only eat really light things, like chicken broth. It's not healthy and I can't see a reason why someone would do it (with no religious reasons) unless they wanted to sound impressive or they were aneroiexic. XxbehindxmyxeyesxX answered Monday October 17 2005, 11:47 pm: ok well.. theres this new thing going around now. ok well not really new, but its a lot more open. generally (but not always) anarexics fast for a certain amount of days, sometimes a water fast (only drinking water. its 0 calories) or theres a fruit fast (only eating fruits which are 0 or negative calories.) same with vegetables. then theres also low calorie fast where you pick a calorie range to stay under (for example 3oo calories a day) for however many days. its a simple way of starving yourself, but even when you do eat it doesnt count because you take in 0 calories, so its basically a weight issue. so when you dont take in any calories and work out, your burning more calories than your intaking, so you lose weight, in a non healthy way. but basically a fast is where you take a period of days and dont eat anything (with calories) for that amount of time. At least thats what i thought because I am a girl and my friends fast because they want to lose a size. [ Advicelady6798's advice column | Ask Advicelady6798 A Question ]

AskAndy answered Monday October 17 2005, 4:34 pm: Fasting is a way of telling God that you really want something to happen and you are ready to sacrifice for it, or its a traditional religios thing. It can be as long or as short as u want it to be. Some fasts only allow you to eat certain things, or at sertain times. It all depends on your religion. sbloemeke answered Monday October 17 2005, 4:25 pm: Fasting is not eating anything. It can be no food, only drink, or no food, only water, or absolutely nothing for the time. It can also be minimal food. However, people fast to lose weight, to say they did it, and sometimes for religeous purposes. You do it for however long you feel like doing it.

chaos answered Monday October 17 2005, 4:20 pm: It depends on who you talk to. Some people fast for religious reasons. If it is religious, there is some things you may leave off your diet or you may not eat at all (except maybe water).
Other people fast to drop a few pounds. It isn't a good idea because your body tries to make up for it by making you hungrier and you gain the weight back x2. [ chaos's advice column | Ask chaos A Question ]
