I’m 13, in the 8th grade, and have a guilty pleasure. I’ve been raised in an intellectual household, with both parents having a Ph.D. Generally, I don’t watch T.V. So I was at my friend’s sleepover birthday party with 7 other girls, and she rented the First Season of the O.C. We watched 4 episodes---and I liked it! I feel kind of guilty, because I know that technically, the show is for advertising and eye-candy with a plot. But I can’t help it. That blonde what’s-his-face that stole a car and set a house on fire is really good looking. And it keeps me at the edge of my seat. Now I’m addicted! What should I do? Am I shallow for liking this?
Thanks
Cheyenne

You are not shallow. If anything, if you pretended that you didn't like it because you wanted seem more intellectual, THAT would be shallow. The OC is fun and entertaining. I watch it. I love it. I graduated with highest honors from a great university. I work in a competitive and intellectual field. I also read US Weekly, I also read the Economist, and watch the news. I like to consider myself pretty well rounded. I bet you are too. So go ahead, embrace Summer, Seth, Ryan and Marissa. Have fun. You only live once. [ Ivy921's advice column | Ask Ivy921 A Question ]

Its real cool that you only watch a little tv too.. but if you look at other people theres like .. Laguna Beach , Real World , and a bunch more !
FunnyCide answered Tuesday November 1 2005, 2:02 pm: Cheyenne,
I do not believe you are "shallow" for enjoying a television show. It is perfectly normal for a thirteen year old girl to enjoy watching a particular show.
I understand your delimma, being raised in a house with a bunch of smart people. ;)
I don't really live in a situation like that. Yes, my parents both went to college, but my dad only has a bachelors (in finance) and a masters degree (in accounting) and my mom has a masters (elementary school teaching). Yes, they are both intelligent enough, but I have higher hopes. I'd love to have a Ph.D. I'm willing to work for it, too. Television does not play a large role in my life, simply because I have no need for it. I enjoy watching Kent Hovind DVDs, [Kent Hovind is a Creationism Evangilist. He's funny, but really smart, so he's fun to watch. And I learn stuff from him.] but that's about the extent of it. I never watch MTV or MTV2. I don't watch ESPN or Disney or Spike or VH1. At rare times (when a special is on or something) I'll watch RFDTV (it's a farming channel. Alot of horse stuff.) or Discovery Science / Discovery Health / History channel. That's just my way.
Hundreds of girls - and guys - love the O.C., and other reality-based TV shows. Some girls are, in fact, infatuated with characters from some of these shows. I don't mean a simple "Yeah, he's cute." kind of thing, I mean - truly infatuated. Posters, books, stickers, magazines, anything that has to do with that character. It's crazy. But normal. Quite normal.
You shouldn't feel bad about liking this TV show, unless it is hindering your school work. Then record the show and watch it after you've done your homework. :)

Vendetta answered Tuesday November 1 2005, 1:46 pm: No, you aren't shallow. Watching TV isn't something you should feel guilty about. I mean, I hate The O.C. a lot, however, a lot of my friends like it. It isn't like you are watching porn or something. [ Vendetta's advice column | Ask Vendetta A Question ]
BeautifulMadness answered Tuesday November 1 2005, 12:47 pm: You can still have a Ph.D and like TV (or, rather, your parents can still have Ph.Ds and you can like TV :P). There are plenty of shows for intelligent people and intelligent people do like laughing sometimes too!! I like to consider myself remotely intelligent, and I watch Scooby Doo...
Everyone has a show they like. I know you probably don't want to get into more TV but I would seriously recommend Desperate Housewives to you as it's serious, funny and you have to work it out as you go along. You might also like shows such as CSI, Law and Order, Without a Trace etc.
There's nothing wring with liking TV! Sad but true fact: there are more TVs than humans on the earth. [ BeautifulMadness's advice column | Ask BeautifulMadness A Question ]
lulabelle answered Tuesday November 1 2005, 12:30 pm: No, you’re not shallow for liking the show. These shows, like soap operas, are addicting. They develop story lines, which raise your serotonin levels and cause those additive feelings. They pick actors that will appeal to the majority of people’s sexual fantasies. Again, raising chemical reactions that create the desire to see the show again. The advertising surrounding the show is associated to it. When people are out shopping and see something that was advertised during the show, they may not remember the reason they have the impulse to try the product. But, try the product they will. Also, there are times when the commercial is catchy and people choose to buy because of that. Advertising preys on our emotions. We are visual beings and we think visually, not in words. Though we do talk to ourselves most of the time these conversations in our head are accompanied by visions. There are several good books on this subject which I include here: Subliminal advertising In American broadcast media, by Stephen A Jones, 1978, The Age of Manipulation: The Con in Confidence, The Sine in Sincere, by Wilson Bryan Key, 1992, and Pocketbook Power: How to Reach the Hearts and Minds of Today’s Most Coveted Consumer-Women, by Bernice Kanner, 2004.
thinkpink03 answered Tuesday November 1 2005, 12:15 pm: no not at all. its just a tv show .. its not a brain sucker thing that makes you addicted to it. its fine if you like it, and fine if you dont.
letsbefak3 answered Tuesday November 1 2005, 11:36 am: Hey dear,
You are hardly shallow and I find this silly question pretty darn cute. I'm glad you can realize what the show is really for, " the show is for advertising and eye-candy with a plot " First of all, there is no reason for you to feel guilty. Just keep control of you wanting to watch this show. Make sure all of your school work and other commitments are set first and other than that. And second of all, being intellectual doesn't mean that you can't watch TV. So what if this is what you enjoy.. So basically. ENJOY THE O.C. , BABE!
jbdreamer answered Tuesday November 1 2005, 11:09 am: Enjoying a few hours of TV a week is not a sin. I find it very relaxing. I watched the entire first season of Desperate Housewives over a weekend while I was home sick.
Having a favorite TV show is a very normal thing. Don't feel bad for enjoying it. It's not like all you do is watch TV. It's just ONE show! [ jbdreamer's advice column | Ask jbdreamer A Question ]

hailebop answered Tuesday November 1 2005, 6:22 am: Most people your age watch too much television, and it's great that you are aware of that and don't want to fall into that pattern. That said though, you shouldn't be afraid of this "guilty pleasure" of yours. Programmes like the O.C. are designed to draw you in and get you hooked, and it's okay to enjoy them for what they are - mindless, but enjoyable nonetheless. Spending an hour or so a week watching escapist television just gives you a chance to unwind and loose yourself in something for a bit. All the best. No don't feel guilty. You should be watching t.v. There is nothing wrong with it. Just because your parents may not watch it or like it, don't mean that you have to feel the same way. I love that show too!!! You are not shallow at all. I hope I helped. x3 [ PrEtTyKiTtY0428's advice column | Ask PrEtTyKiTtY0428 A Question ]

sizzlinmandolin answered Tuesday November 1 2005, 2:16 am: I don't watch that much TV either so I kind of know where you're coming from. There's nothing like a good book! Anyways, the reason you don't watch TV shouldn't be because you are from an "intellectual" household...it should be simply because you just don't like it that much. It is good, however, to be exposed to what's on TV just as long as you don't let it reshape your values or anything like that. If you were considered shallow the entire country would be shallow...television is not a "guilty pleasure" by anyone's, but extremely fanatical people's standards. Just about everyone watches TV now and again and many people watch it constantly. There's nothing wrong with it at all, it's just a form of entertainment like a play. There are a lot of "intellectual" programs on TV too that you can learn a lot from. If you like the OC then watch it! It's not going to change who you are as a person, it'll just make you happy. Good luck! [ sizzlinmandolin's advice column | Ask sizzlinmandolin A Question ]

Not at all. It's actually great what you've done. It's just a big change & it's different for you. Change is always good, especially when something like this happens. But, no you shouldn't feel guilty or shallow at all for being addicted to the OC. =P
