ive had 2 different brands and both of them have at some point stopped heating up (the light goes on, so i know the power is on)
the first kind i had was a ceramic tools and the second was a vidal sassoon.
any ideas why they keep dying on me? and suggestions for a good ceramic straightener?

helpachick answered Sunday October 30 2005, 3:20 pm: well, i'm not sure why that is happening it could be just b/c they are old or something. (if you've had them for a long time) but a really good straigtner is revlon. i have that kind and have had the same one for a while and it works really great!

FunnyCide answered Sunday October 30 2005, 1:45 pm: Okay, I use a CHI 1'' Ceremic Flat Iron. It works like a charm!! It's really good... used by alot of hairdressers and stuff. It's a bit pricy (range is between $65 - $112), but it's really good. It heats up in 10 seconds or less, gets up to 450 degrees (or something like that), will automatically shut off if left unused / unattended / gets too hot. Which is very good. Very. I've accidentally left it on before and left the house, and when I return, it will have turned itself off. Once I left it on while I was in my room doing school, and after about four hours, it turned itself off. If I want it back on, all I have to do is flip the switch. :)
One possible reason the other two died on you was because of a circuit shorting? Or maybe they were just cheaply made... no offense or anything.
Check e-Bay for a CHI straightener. That's where I got mine - brand new, in the box, the whole shabang - for like $85. Which is relatively cheap compared to how much it is if you buy it somewhere else.

Karen answered Sunday October 30 2005, 10:58 am: The ceramic straightener that I use is a Helen of Troy and it works wonders. As for why the straighteners you use keep dying, have you been using the same power outlet when you are straightening your hair? My straightener would do the same thing, until I found out that it was the power outlet I was using that was causing it to not work. [ Karen's advice column | Ask Karen A Question ]
Gloworm answered Sunday October 30 2005, 10:51 am: Maybe the reason why the heat keeps going is because you've had it for a really long time or else a fuse keeps going in the plug and the light isn't going off because it is solar powered or something or else the light is using up the electricity from the part of the straightener which gives the heat. This is probobly because it is faulty.
My straightener is a wet to straight by remmington which is really good because it has twice the protection of normal straighteners and that way you don't have to blow dry your hair and then straighten your hair or wait til it drys and then straighten it. Sorry, I have no clue why they keep dying on you.
