I'm 28 years old. I graduated from Michigan State University with my Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. GO GREEN! Now I'm a high school chemistry teacher in New York City living with my husband in a small studio apartment we pay way too much money for.

advice
This is a very random question..But lets say my name is like Anna right? Can I change it to Annie? Or, you know...Not change it. Just use it. =) It's basically the same thing, right?
You can do what you want.
I have a situation like that. James is my middle name, and I've been called Jack.
You're fine.

Jack you are one away from 1000!
Anyway, this year I may be recieving a French exchange student. I've had one at my house in the past because my brother got to host one. The only problem is- I made fool out of myself in front of the last one. When I met him I completely forgot almost every French phrase I knew. So my question is, would it be bad to keep a list of French phrases written down by me? Also, do you know any ways I could practice my pronounciation? I know you don't take French, but just wondering =D.
-Erinn.
1,000 questions!
Your idea should work fine =D.
Haha- I've read this question like a bajillion times, Erinn, and I'm finally answering it =D.

Hey, i needed advice from a guy's point of view, and i thought maybe you could help me with this...
I just started high school, about 3 weeks ago. There is this guy that sits behind me, named Ryan, and we joke around all the time. In Middle school, i was flirty with some guys, but in a joking way. I would never actually do what i joke about. I thought that i wouldnt act like that in high school, since rumors fly and i dont want to be considered a slut. Ryan and I joke around all the time, and just today, we were flirting. I do not do this to all guys, just the ones that I like and im not going to do much of it in high school. I dont know, should i still flirt and joke around with him.(We joke about sex) or should i not? I told him its only between me and him, but i dont know. I dont have a BF, and im considered a really smart good girl in my classes.
What should i do? Put my flirting keys low-key?
Don't ever be ashamed of flirting- who cares if people think you're a slut. That word, along with "whore" "bitch" and a number of others too inappropriate for this site, are just thrown around by anyone. Seriously- don't let stupid immature people stop you from experiencing one of the funnest parts of teenage-dom: and no, that isn't sex or any of the other things teens do these days because they want to feel cool.
Flirt to your hearts content- but remember, it doesn't all have to be sexual flirting [I guess this is what you would call it]- it can be really innocent =D.
Make good choices!

I saw this "HEROES" preview on the internet (it was a real one "official") and i just wanted to know the song, if anyone knows the song?! The preview had Hiro pulling out his sword, and mohindur with all papers flying around him. Peter holding his hands out like Jesus and claire squating about to touch a lake!
Some of the lyrics are:
It dont matter to the sun
If you go or if you stay
there will be a tomorow
But imagine... etc. It stops there.
IF ANYONE KNOWS THIS SONG IT WOULD OF GREAT HELP!
Thanks!
Maggie
Hey, if you send me the link to the video- I might be able to help you.
I love Heroes! I can't wait until tomorrow!
YAY!

Ok my teacher is constantly picking on me because my voice is so quiet.
Like she won't talk to me and everytime i try to ask her for help she'll shout SORRY WHAT WAS THAT and I'll try to say it louder and she'll constantly interupt me so i'll say "nevermind.."
She's the one in the beginning of the year going "don't think that teachers hate you or are trying to fail you because they get much more work if you do fail" But at this rate i'd prob fail because I'm not getting any help and I have no idea what to do.
And my voice is super quiet so i probably can tlak louder but the louder I talk, the more unclear so it will sound fairly similar to a nail meeting wood.
What can i do? ask for a different teacher?
Talk to your teacher. Frankly, what she's doing is out of line. Some people, like you, cannot help the fact that they are naturally quiet, and if your teacher continues to do this "SORRY WHAT WAS THAT?" in what sounds like a rude way, well then get your parents involved. Have them email the teacher. If she still persists, well then have them email the principal- and then it should be taken care of. If you don't want to get your parents involved- go to your counselor- she can probably help you.
I certainly don't think you should have to change the way YOU ARE for a teacher- unless she has a serious hearing problem. If this becomes a matter of not succeeding in the class- well then you should ask for a new teacher.

"An eye for eye makes the whole world blind" -Gandhi
What does this mean?
Some ancient civilization, their name escapes me, had the first written laws. One of them was "An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth,". This means that if someone hit you in the eye and damaged it- the same thing would happen to you.
Basically you get what you give. If that makes sense.
So Gandhi believed that this rule was wrong. That's basically it.

and you'll be able to find questions that will help you with your "problem" I guess.
I don't have much experience with this at all.. Sorry.

I have a few math problems I forgot how to do. If you only know how to do one of them that's fine. Thanks in advance.
1. What does this mean? "What is the slope of the linear equation 5y-10x=-15" How do you figure it out?
2. If x = 2a - b2, how do you figure out what "a" equals?
3. How do you figure out what the slope of the linear equation 5y-10x=-15 is?
1. Slope is literally the slope or incline of a line on the coordinate plane. To figure out the slope- it needs to be in this form: y=mx+b.
So you would have to move the -10x to the other side with the -15, so you would add 10x to both sides. Hopefully you know how to solve an equation, so I won't explain all the steps.
2. To figure out what a equals, you have to isolate the a on one side. If you ever have to "Solve for ___", then you should get that variable by itself on one side of the equation.
If that doesn't help- I'll try to explain a little more without giving you the answer =D.

Um how do you pronounce Relient K?
Ree-lie-ant Kay
Don't say it slow like "Re...lie...nt.."
Keep the "Ree", "lie" and "ant" together.
The "Relient" sort of comes from the word "rely"
Good band.

hey, my name is Andrew Ketron, im 15 years old and live in Michigan. theres this girl in my second hour class that i like. she and i have been friends since 8th grade, and shes allways been realy flirtatious when she and i talk. all of my friends know i like her, but i dont know if she likes me. this year in our second hour, first day she sat right in front of me and every day since we sit next to eachother and talk all hour. we sit together at lunch, occasionaly talk on the phone after school. but she seems to like to talk about this other guy, she likes him, she and him r X's. but she seems REALY flirtatious when we talk, so im totaly lost. id like to ask her out but dont want to get rejected and then have our friendship "go all wrong" as some people put it. think you can figure this out? my email is Twilights.shadow@yahoo.com
Well hello Andrew. Haha- funny thing is, I know you. =P.
Given this seemingly impossible circumstance on Advicenators, I know exactly how to answer this.
Her name is Heather, am I correct?
Well I know for a fact that she is trying to butt-in on another relationship as of last night. So personally, I wouldn't go after this girl.
But, lets pretend I DON'T know you. Well if she's made it clear that she likes someone else, then it isn't suggested that you go after her- it will probably end in heart-break.

hey,
i was wondering how do you size down a picture for my column? I remember seeing something about it earlier, something like picturetiny.com or something like that..
thanks for your time!!
The only way I know of is to use Paint on your computer. I am not sure of any websites that resize images, but you could search "Image Resizers" on Google.
On Paint- go to "Image" and then down to "Stretch/Skew" and about 75% for both Horizontal and Vertical should make it significantly smaller.
Then if its still too large to upload on here, well then just upload it on tinypic.com and then you can take the URL you get put it on the "Profile Settings" page and it can be as big as you wish.

If a guy friend of yours looks at you all the time when your around the place hese in and he just looks at you alot of time and your friends even notice it..
does it mean he likes you?
ya, i kno stupid question
dnt matter
thanks
Most likely, but the only way to know for sure, as I always say, is to ask him. Chances are that he does like you, he might just be not wanting to let you know, because he's afraid how you will react.
Don't worry- its all normal.

I wrote this question here:
http://www.advicenators.com/qview.php?q=513212
But no one seems to answer it. I know you are a good columnist and I was wondering if you could help me out. Honest opinions are great. =]
Thanks :D
(ps. sorry in advance to have you transfer over to another page)
Your question isn't approved yet. Lately, questions have been approved only ten at a time- and they appear about a day later. So just be patient- and you'll get some answers. I'll probably answer it when I see it, if I'm on at the time.

I have these two friends, Jessie and Kelsey, who have gotten to be like best friends. The problem is, Kelsey is black, and Jessie's parents are really prejudiced. They won't let Kelsey come to their house, or let Jessie go to Kelseys. They won't even let Jessie go anywhere with Kelsey. So whenever Kelsey wants to do something, Jessie has to make up excuses why she can't. And now Kelsey is starting to wonder whats wrong. She thinks Jessie doesn't really like her or something. And Jessie is really upset and doesn't know what to do. She wants to tell Kelsey the truth, but she's afraid it will really hurt her feelings and ruin their friendship. Plus she's really embarrassed about her parents being so prejudiced. But if she keeps making up excuses, Kelsey will think that Jessie doesnt want to be her friend, or maybe even think that its Jessie who's prejudiced. So what should she do? And please don't say she should talk to her parents, because she's already done that and they aren't going to change.
Jessie needs to be honest with Kelsey. If Kelsey is smart- she shouldn't be hurt by Jessie saying it. Sure, she can totally be upset at Jessie's parents- but Kelsey can't be mad that Jessie isn't with her. Jessie can't help that her parents have these rules. Yes, they aren't fair, I agree with you.
Should Jessie decide to not tell her, well tell her to kiss her friendship with Kelsey goodbye. Kelsey has a right to know- and keeping something like that from her is just wrong.

Wouldn't lipgloss get everywhere?
Plus it's sticky.
Why not vanilla? Do guys hate it?
I am not sure- I'm not a girl, so I can't consider myself an expert on this subject.. o.O?
No- I said Vanilla because its the flavor that Laura said she didn't like. I was trying to be funny =D.

Tell me, what is the proper way to feed my goldfish?
I assume it would be advisable to just buy some food from a pet store and just follow the direction on the thing. Maybe just give a few specks of food a day. You don't want to kill it.

how i do get my own forum?
Hey!
http://www.advicenators.com/qview.php?q=504815
From there:
http://www.advicenators.com/talkaboutme.php?userboard_id=30323
Notice the "30323" at the end of the link. If you go onto your column, and click "ASK ME A QUESTION", the URL on the page has a number at the end. This number is the registered columnist you are. So, I am the 30,323rd columnist to register on this site. There are 46,535 registered columnists right now [July 20, 2007 3:50pm Eastern time].
Anyway, take your number, and replace my number with yours [so you put it at the end after the "="], and that gives you your own personal forum.
So you take your URL, and add it to the following code to get it to appear like it does in my column [as "my forum"]:
My Forum or whatever you want to show up
Check mine out sometime, and make sure to put the link on your column so people know about it.

If bald people work as chefs in a restaurant,do they have to wear hairnets?
No- they don't have hair- so why would they have to wear a net that prevents hair from falling out into the food if they don't have hair. Some restaurants might still make them wear it just in case.

Why is it called the People's Republic Of China when China's not a republic?
Here's my take on it: China was seeing that one of the world superpowers [that would be us] was so anti-Communism, that they feared that having their name reflect that they are Communists would stop trade with us, but China is such a huge trade partner- that the US would be idiotic to just stop trade with them for any reason. Plus- "People's Republic of China" sounds better and more appealing than "Communist China". Would you go live there if that was the name? Probably not.

Could someone be addicted to counseling? If so, how would you treat them?
Well sending them to counseling for their addiction surely wouldn't help- so I'm assuming a doctor, though I've never actually heard of a person being addicted to counseling.
