math help

Question Posted Saturday September 8 2007, 6:53 pm

I have a few math problems I forgot how to do. If you only know how to do one of them that's fine. Thanks in advance.

1. What does this mean? "What is the slope of the linear equation 5y-10x=-15" How do you figure it out?

2. If x = 2a - b2, how do you figure out what "a" equals?

3. How do you figure out what the slope of the linear equation 5y-10x=-15 is?

1. The slope of a line is the angle at which it "goes," for lack of a better term.

I will do a similar problem for you: 2y-4x=-6

First, you need to get it into slope-intercept form...y=mx + b.

Add 4x to both sides. 2y= 4x-6
Divide by 2. y= 2x-3

Now, you have the problem in slope-intercept form. Since your questions 1 and 3 are asking the same thing, this should satisfy them both. Here goes:

The "m" value (In the case of y= 2x-3, this is 2.) is the slope. The "b" value (In this case, the -3.) is where the graph crosses the vertical axis.

As for question number 2, you need to isolate a. I assume that by b2 you meant b squared. From now on, write b squared like this: b^2.

we're not supposed to give answers, so i'll just tell you how :)

1. slope-intercept form is y=mx+b, where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept. so if you have 5y-10x=-15... you have to basically get the left side of the equation (5y-10x) to just be y. to do this, add 10x to both sides of the equation... then if you know how to do equations you know the next step (it involves dividing the whole thing by the number connected to y at that point). then... voila! you have y=whatever. so, since the slope is the letter m, and slope-intercept form is y=mx+b... look at the number that is connected to the x (and that would be in the same position as the m). yes, that is your slope :) and of course the b part at the end is the y-intercept. making sense now?
2. first of all, you always put the number in front of the variable. so b2 should be 2b. i'm trying not to like answer your homework for you so i don't get kicked off this site so sorry if i'm being vague. and as far as solving that, there is no solution unless there is more info given because there's not a way to solve it any further without knowing more. so you would just write down the simplest form of the answer... and since you can't simplify that any more than it is without more info, that would probably be what you write down. i really hope i helped, and if you have any more math questions, don't hesitate to ask!

EDIT: now that i think about it, i screwed up number 2 with the specific instructions (the solving for a part) so listen to jack about what to write down and not me.

1. Slope is literally the slope or incline of a line on the coordinate plane. To figure out the slope- it needs to be in this form: y=mx+b.
So you would have to move the -10x to the other side with the -15, so you would add 10x to both sides. Hopefully you know how to solve an equation, so I won't explain all the steps.

2. To figure out what a equals, you have to isolate the a on one side. If you ever have to "Solve for ___", then you should get that variable by itself on one side of the equation.

If that doesn't help- I'll try to explain a little more without giving you the answer =D.
