Why is it called the People's Republic Of China when China's not a republic?

It is a republic. China does have elections(everyone is required to vote, actually), but there is only one party to vote for. Compare to the US, where there are two parties to vote for, both virtually identical. ]
Here's my take on it: China was seeing that one of the world superpowers [that would be us] was so anti-Communism, that they feared that having their name reflect that they are Communists would stop trade with us, but China is such a huge trade partner- that the US would be idiotic to just stop trade with them for any reason. Plus- "People's Republic of China" sounds better and more appealing than "Communist China". Would you go live there if that was the name? Probably not.
