belimic

Question Posted Monday May 29 2006, 2:17 pm

i became being belimic a little bit ago because im starting to dislike my eating habits. dont worry im probably going to eat reguarly soon. i havent researched it that much but i was wondering how throwing up is bad for you? i mean, the food goes down in your stomach and takes nutrients out of the food but all it does is make the rest come up again. whats wrong with that? the excess food exit the body later anyway. just in a different way.

I f food you eat is constantly being thrown up, a lot of your energy is being used, because your body is only made to throw up when something is it that shouldnt be there, also, the nutrients that you do get isnt enough to keep you energized, it can make you very weak. And its really gross, because barfing makes you have really bad breath.

Being bulimic is extremely hazardous to your health. While yes, the food does enter your stomach, it is only for a short period of time and the food is not processed. Very little nutrients are taken to your bloodstream from your stomach, most of that occurs in the small intestine, and that takes up to 4 hours after you have actually swallowed the food.

Also, when you throw up, acids and enzymes from your stomach also come up, not just food. These liquids are meant to stay in your stomach, and your esophogus is not equipped to handle the strong acids. After only a few purges, the lining of your esophagus is already beginning to get eroded away and get ulcers and other lacerations.

In extreme cases, prolonged purging can actually cause a hole in the esophogus, which requires painful surgery and a feeding tube while the esophogus is repaired.

The acids in your stomach also cause erosion to your teeth and can very quickly turn them yellow and more cavity prone.

Purging can also cause painful ulcers in your stomach that will make it even more difficult to eat later.

After even as little time as a week of being bulimic, your body can become accustomed to your eating habits. When you decide that it is time to stop, or are forced to stop, your body will still automatically contract the muscles of your digestive system, causing you to involuntarily throw up.

Bulimia, as well as all other eating disorders CAN KILL YOU. Please seek help for your disorder. You will quickly learn that there are other, safer, more effective ways to lose weight if you are unhappy with your weight, and it will keep you healthy and at the weight you need to be. (Eating healthy and exersize.)

although it seems harmless, its not. your body doesnt get all the nutrients it needs. also when you throw up the acids from your stomach come up and can really hurt your esaphougus and teeth and such. if you dont like your eating habits i think you should just start to eat healthy. try to cut out snacks and stuff. hope i helped

I undertand where you're coming from. I guess it would be easy to think that. But the truth is...the esophagus get's eroded from all the acid when you puke. If you keep throwing up your food, over time you could really mess up your esophagus. I've had lots of friends go through this. Most of them stopped in time, thankfully. But there's one...she told me she stopped and she really didnt and she ended up in the hospital for a week. They had to feed her through a tube b/c she wouldnt keep anything down. You should be very careful about this. And sometimes, even if you say you're going to stop, if it becomes a habit- you might not be able to. Keep me updated on how you're doing if you would like.

Razhie answered Monday May 29 2006, 2:47 pm:
Food doesn't simply exit the body when you vomit, you also spit up a lot of stomach acid which is very harmful to your throat and mouth. Over the short term this will cause irritation and inflammation, after a few months of this behavoir you could be looking at roting your teeth and developing gum disease. You might also develop swelling in your cheeks from this acid. Vomiting too often and voilently can rupture the esophagus.

Just so you understand, your stomach doesn't absorb nutrients from your food; it only breaks those nutrients down so that the intestines can absorb them. If you are vomiting up your food before it reaches your intestines and follows the rest of your digestive track your body is NOT getting the nutrients it needs. It is only the stuff that the intestines don't absorb that gets expelled as waste. All that happens when you vomit is that you trick your body in to not feeling so hungry, because you filled your stomach, but you aren't giving it ANY nutrients or vitamins. In reality your body is starving, you just don't feel it as quickly.

As for the long term effects of bulimia, I'll just list a few of 'em to keep it short: Malnutrition (obviously), dehydration, dry skin, weak nails, hair loss, high blood pressure, iron deficiency and cancer of the throat or voice box. There are also numerous deseasies you can develop in your intestines and kindeys and bulemia makes pregnancy more risky for women.

All and all, it's a lot more serious then I think you understand. I'd suggest you go back to eating properly, if you felt you were eating too much, see a nutritionist or doctor to get some guidance on how to eat well. Bulimia is not a good option.

well, the only way food breaks don is when stomach acid breaks it down. when you throw up- wether youre making yourself throw up- or when youre sick, or anytime- that stomach acid is coming right back up. after time- it can damage your esophagus, and especially the enamel on your teeth. if you do it long enough- your body will kind of become immune to throwing up, and when you dont expect it, you could throw up dry heaves if theres nothing in your stomach. this means that bile from your liver, and mucus lining your stomach will come up, and IT IS PAINFUL! all in all- bulemia is serious. and there is no playing around with it. if you are in fact bulemic- you shoudl definetely go see a doctor. but mainly- BE HAPPY WITH THE BODY GOD GAVE YOU- youre damaging both your mind and your body when you change your eating habits in such a drastic way. really hope i helped. keep in touch and let me know whats hapnin. im praying for ya'. spitfire9631@yahoo.com

Your body takes nutrients from the food when it is on your intestines. Not your stomach. So it does not help.

Also, the stomach acid can hurt your throat.
