Well...

Numerous reasons I suppose. One main was is that no one really wants to belive that we are alone here, wandering throught time and space with n real purpose.

Some just want to have faith, but no matter what you belive (in God or not) than you have faith. If you don't belive in God, then you have the faith that God does not exist, whereas if you believe in God, then you obviously have faith in him.

Belief in God gives people something to do with their life, and for the most part, lets them believe in good amidst all the strife around us.

To counter that... they ask why does god let us suffer?

In which case, they believe because Then they have someone to blame for ths predicament we are all in and contribute to.

For others, God justifies their actions. ie Holy Wars, Religious Persecution etc and so on... And the belief that if they do something wrong, they don't really have to repent, because God will forgive us.

Twisted, aren't we?

I think that a lot of it has to do with fear. More frightening than going to hell is the prospect of nonexistance. being tortured for an eternity is a lot more comprehendable than the idea of someday not existing. But, again, most people who believe in a heaven and a hell expect that they're going to heaven, so it's something that is comforting to believe in. The reason that they believe in this originally is mostly because it is what they were told when they were young, and thus it seems most feasible. Plus, the majority of other people believe this, especially if they were raised in a family that regularly attends church. They grow up with peers who believe the same thing, and many of the elderly figures in their life also tell them this and believe it as well. This is a bit of a confirmation bias, the people have heard it at all sorts of places and thus it must be true. Also, they are lumped into a group and given a sense of community by being a member which is something people like, it is instinctive to want to be a member of a group, to be accepted. We are socail animals, after all.

It is easy for this kind of person to discredit science due for a need for consistancy. When someone is told all their life one thing, i.e. that God created man, yet they are given very compelling evidence for evolution by natural selection, they are in a state of cognitive dissonance, and thus they have to resolve the conflict. When the idea of creation is supported by all their friends and culture, it has more resonance than something presented less strongly, and thus they resolve the conflict by dismissing the statement that natural selection is how man came to be. Also, the community of people who believe in evolution isn't as much of a tight-knit, supportive group as is that of those who believe in a God. Plus, most people of a more scientific nature (such as scientists) feel that it is futile to argue because most people are very stubborn when it comes to this sort of ting, and it is not that important to sway that sort of person anyways, they probably wouldn't make any great contributions to science.

I'm a Christian; Here's my opinion.

I think of all the beautiful things. Look up at a clear blue sky on a spring day. Look at a couple celebrating their 50th anniversary; Smiling just like they did on their wedding day. Look at your family and friends.
I just think that all of these things, so beautiful, had to come from someone somewhere. They couldn't just be there. Somebody much more powerful than we are must have created these wonderful things; a higher being... God. We can't create them. God does. God guides us and teaches us. He shows us how to love, and He loves us.

Religion or a belief in God isn't science. It's based on FAITH. You can't tell me that you're 100% positive that there is no God and I can't tell you that I'm 100% sure that there is. You either believe or you don't. Some people go, "There is no God because science says so." But, like I said, it's ALL FAITH. Not science.

That is what I think, anyway. A lot of people probably disagree, but it's just my opinion.

I hope I helped, and if you have any more questions, feel free to leave one in my inbox!

I believe in God. When I was younger I thought I believed in God because that's what I was raised to do. But now that I have more experience I can honestly say that I KNOW there is a God. There is no question about it in my book. With experience comes knowledge.

I am open to what others think, though.

I am mormon and i guess the reason is because i believe only one person would have the power to put us here and one person to control it. I believe in him even though i have gone through so much. I just got a car and i have been in three accidents and i could have died but for reason i believed that someone was watching over me. I am not trying to change your mind or anything. There has to be someone that is controling when we die, it doesnt make any sense without it to me. I guess you could say that i have the worst luck in the world but i guess for some reason i know i am going to be ok. its hard to explain into words. My dad almost died and i prayed that if i would be the best person i could be the i want my dad to live. And turns out he has diabetes and he would have died but something told me not to worry.

LoViNu2mOuCh answered Thursday March 2 2006, 2:15 pm:
I am an athiest as well, but I have really tried to look at religions and see why people believe in them. What I have learned is that it is something to live for. Especially in the after death. Because I am not sure what your views are on death, but for me I believe that there is nothing. We just die, and there is nothing more. That is a scary thought, so I think that people search for something that will happen so their life wasn't a "waste," and that they will either go to a better place, or come back as somthing else, or whatever else.I think that is one of the reasons for belief.

Another is just the fact that it gives you morals, and I guess "rules" to live by. Some people have trouble with making rules for themselves, so when they have something like a religion it is just a set of morals to live by that is set.

Now those are just some things I have kind of come up with, and I am an athiest so those are just some thoughts I have come up with from being around people of different religions and such.

tasuki answered Thursday March 2 2006, 1:43 pm:
When people ask why you don't believe in God, you probably can't come up with a really great answer. You might say, "Because it's stupid." or "Because organized religion brainwashes people and rapes them of their individuality." But most of the time you probably say, "I don't know. That's just the way I am." And you believe strongly in your non-belief, right? When people try to get you to change, it makes you frustrated, sometimes angry. Religious people are just the same, whether they are Jewish, Pagan, Buddhist, Christian, or something else. There isn't much of a reason why people believe what they do. They just believe.

People have to believe in something right? I imagine you believe in something. Why do you belive in something? It makes you hope for a better day ahead, a brighter future, who wants to know the next day has no hope and we might die toorrow and just be left in a grave to rot, I wanna believe I will go to heaven, and be happy. Even if there is not a heaven I still want to belive in it because if I don't everyday will just be misery. Don't get me wrong I like my life, but things are crappy everywhere you turn in this world, and in the end I don't want to think about being rotting somewhere in the ground. Just my opinion though.

Well Im athiest too so I cant tell you about my reasons :). The reasons why people belive may differ but mostly its because the phylosophy of a certain religion makes theire lives a bit brighter. Religion is more about phylosophy than gods and stuff BUT thats my personal (and quite briefly said) opinion.

I'm a very devout Christian and I believe in God because it's what makes sense to me. Ever since I was little, my parents have told me that God watches over us and protects us from harm. I simply believe in it because I want to and because I truly believe that he's real.

Alin75 answered Thursday March 2 2006, 7:35 am:
I am an agnostic (those who have come to accept that we simply do not know). In my opinion the reason people cling to religion is because they cannot acknowledge that they do not have all the answers.

Its inherently human to want to explain everything. If you look at primitive cultures they explain almost everything with the presence of a deity (why it rains for example). As science progresses the last elements of the unknown are then left as the work of God (or actually more like the PROOF of God). Believers like to point to something that we cannot expain and somehow argue that this proves the existence of an omnipotent being...

Mind you, I am not saying there is no God, though I have yet to see adequate evidence from believers or athiests alike.

Strong belief in a single God or religion comes, in my opinion, primarily from your upbringing. I used to be a believer, and it was strongly implied in my upbringing that it was wrong or even dangerous to even question my religion.

No wonder that depending on which continent you are born you simply "know" that yours is the true faith. If you drill something into a child from birth, and if you imply a negative outcome to the rejection of those teachings (e.g. hell), is it any wonder that some people never truly question those teachings?

For the record I have never ever read anything that remotely begins to support either the existance or the non- existance of a God. Athiests and believers are two camps that fling arguments back and forth without a shred of evidence one way or the other. Well, at least thats my opinion.

Hope my mess of thoughts was of some use/interest to you.
