I am aware that this will not get an award for brevity, but humor me.
Background info: I am someone who is known to have an incredibly individual, crazy, random style. I love uniqueness, and I hate wearing things that I know what 1 million other people are wearing. This goes for anything of the sort, whether it's a studded belt or a short little Hollister skirt- BUT this question is mostly geared towards the latter (to clarify, the clothing that the so-called "pretty people" wear).
I'm really trying to comprehend how people can like clothing like what is sold at Hollister or those type of stores. I guess it's almost humorous since I know the majority of people ask the same question about my outfits a good deal of the time- what could she possibly be thinking with that outfit? But I just don't understand...and I'm honestly trying to be as accepting of others expressions as I wish they would be of my own.
What joy do you get out of wearing these mass manufactured clothes that aren't even worth taking two looks at? They are so BORING and unoriginal and so..lacking in any creativity. Not to mention, those skirts practically show butt cheeks and things I DO NOT WANT TO SEE! EW! Between the false advertising (Feefee's stupid ass coconut shack, etc.) and the atrocious amount of skin shown, I can only wonder what America's "pretty people" are thinking and if they really are so "pretty."
mn731 answered Friday December 30 2005, 2:28 am: It's all about OPINION.
Sometimes, I see people at the mall or at school..and they're wearing something hideous..and I'm thinking, "Oh my God, how can you be wearing something like that?!" I guess I immediately jump to that reaction because it's not something I'm used to..or something that I would wear..However, I tolerate those kind of people..I mean, if they choose to wear something weird, then it's fine with me..It doesn't affect me in any way.
I'm one of those people that wear Abercrombie and Hollister..so I guess you would be the one thinking/criticizing me in your head..but why can't you tolerate it?..It sounds like you're really annoyed of people that wear what's in style (in mine, and in many other's opinion.)
Also, Hollister isn't for "pretty people"...Everything is so overrated..Like there was a question weeks ago..and this person was asking for opinions on the store Abercrombie&Fitch...some people love it..and others HATE it..The people that hate it exaggerate what it really is..Ex: "Bad quality, paper-thin shirts.." They also said that jeans are $120..Some are, but most are like $70ish...They exaggerate it because they don't shop there (probably have never stepped foot in that store) And yes, it is overpriced..but it's worth it.
Your Question is to help you understand why some people choose to wear this type of clothing?..It's all about opinion..If you don't like it, then don't shop there!..Don't pay any attention to the people who wear it..It's not like what they're wearing is going to affect you and the way you dress.
Finally, what you may see is "boring and unoriginal and so..lacking in any creativity", others see it as good quality, cute, and in style. [ mn731's advice column | Ask mn731 A Question ]

betterthanyou_X3 answered Wednesday December 28 2005, 12:24 pm: What I don't understand is why people put Hollister and Abercrombie in a category all by themselves and talk about how stupid the stores are. There are many clothing stores that are almost exactly the same as them.
Why do certain people buy clothes like that? Because they like them. Just like another group of certain people tend to wear nothing but Hot Topic and things like that. You could also say why everyone all of a sudden has a pair of converse in their closet.
It's just a BRAND. Just like Hot Topic is just a BRAND. And everyone that shops there buys clothes that others buy too, just like people that buy Hollister.
As for the skin showing, girls have always been wearing skirts like that you just notice it now because they're all from Hollister. There are many girls that shop there that don't like showing that much skin. [ betterthanyou_X3's advice column | Ask betterthanyou_X3 A Question ]

I think that "pretty people" wear these specific name brand clothes soley because it is categorized as "high class".
I know it's funny, how can something so boring be considered high class? Well, the founders of the clothing line must have been pretty damn rich to begin with, and for most middle class people, they yearn to be like these rich people...which includes buying whatever they produce, including plain t-shirts that cost $60 a piece.
They like to buy these ridiculously expensive items to conform with the so called, IN crowd. And if bought, they are considered "sexy" as their advertising implies.
SoInToYoUx0x answered Tuesday December 27 2005, 1:28 pm: i understand were you coming from 100% i dont get it either and the best part of all that is the prices are rediculus a shirt wtih no creativity or nothin is 20 dollars that isnt truely worth it. i guess it is all beacause they think it willmake fit in..
xXxpinky615xXx answered Tuesday December 27 2005, 12:28 pm: I can see where you are coming from. However, Hollister just so happens to be one of my favorite stores. I don't go by what is "in" or what is supposed to "look good". If I feel comfortable in it, and if it fits me right, I'll wear it.
I completely agree with the skirts. That's why I don't wear their skirts =).
You, unlike 99% of the female highschool population, seem to have a unique style and I praise you highly for that. Most people aren't willing to take those risks.
All the girls I know that wear those clothes wear it for the name. I wear it because I think they are cute and they fit me nice since I have an awkward body.
I'm not saying that Hollister is the ONLY store I shop at. I shop at these little boutiques that no one has ever heard of and that's where I get my bit of unique style from. I mix all of my clothes so that not everything I'm wearing is from the same store. I'll shop at stores from Hollister to Hot Topic, Betsy Johnson to American Eagle. And, of course, those boutiques that no one has heard of ; )
I will disagree that there is alot of skin showing for their clothing. Yes, SUMMER stuff has alot of skin showing. They have great T's, jeans long sleeved shirts and sweaters that DON'T show anything at all. It's all about what the girls choose to wear it WITH that makes it seem so slutty.
Another thing that would contribute to the sluttiness would be girls failing to choose clothes that FIT THEM. A girl can in reality be a size Medium in shirts, but then goes and buys and XS. Hence, showing the tits and chichos (fat around the stomach... Love handels)
Sorry if I was just rambling on and on.. I hope that it helped you understand a LITTLE BIT.
Igotamonopoly answered Tuesday December 27 2005, 12:10 pm: I don't think of it like that. I feel that you can have your own individual style and just get your stuff anywhere. I have a shirt from hollister. Big deal. I have AE pants. So what? Do you get what I mean? The skirts aren't that short, by the way :). I don't feel like I answered this question, I just kinda gave my opinion on it, so sorry if I didn't help, but I think I might have given you a different viewpoint. Only soup cans need a label!! FunnyCide answered Tuesday December 27 2005, 12:07 pm: Actually, I feel the same way as you.
I can't understand why everyone wants to look the same. That's incredibly unoriginal.
I'm not great with sewing, so I generally mix and match and shop at the thrift store / discount stores. I understand that some people may like SOME things that are "in" or whatever, but I know people (have aquaintences) who only wear what is "in." What all the pretty people wear.
I know a girl who goes to my church (get this, it's funny) and she wears skirts that if she even bends a LITTLE or moves the wrong way, her butt shows. I'm like... whoa. Not good. Yeah, even my dad commented. He said "Did 'Arlie' wear her underwear to church today?" -- he was kidding of course, but that's about how short that skirt was.
I have been to Abercrombie once, Hollister once, American Eagle once and Aeropostal (sp?) once. I was not shopping for myself. I was with a friend who wanted to go to the mall and went into all those stores. I just stood there. Bored. Everything looks the same.
I like to be original. I always get my hair cut a different way when I get it cut, I dye it fun colors (I'm homeschooled, so my school won't get mad at me) and wear odd jewelry. I love the Thrift store.
Basically all of my clothes are from the thrift store, a yard sale, or a discount store. My cousins are BIG pretty people. If it's "in," they have it in six colors. I get their hand-me-downs, but I don't wear any of them because it's so stinking tight, short, shows WAY too much, and it's the same thing that everyone is wearing.
I know, it's hard to understand why everyone wants to be a proverbial robot and look like everyone else. All the "hot" "pretty people." No one accepts me. They're like... why do you want to wear that? It's so... weird. Yeah, weird. Weird like YOU! Hah. It's difficult. They all want to blend in, and I want to stand out. I don't understand why anyone would want to blend in, and they don't understand why anyone would want to stand out. It's a mutual lack of understanding.
JackiexMarie answered Tuesday December 27 2005, 9:19 am: I am totally against putting people into little cliques by their style, but your partly right,Some people wear hollister or abercrombie just to fit in with the crowd, and half of them probably don't even like the clothes. I bet everyone has an outfit they REALLY like that they see in a store one day but don't have the guts to wear it because all these people wearing the same clothes and its kind of letting of a message that says "if you don't look like this you wont fit in" But some people, arent even trying to fit it and they probably just think of these stores as another regular store. Like they walk by and see a store called hollister and maybe see a nice t shirt, they walk in and say oh thats cute and they buy it. Well overall I do not think someone should buy an outfit that they don't even like just to fit in. [ JackiexMarie's advice column | Ask JackiexMarie A Question ]
Mercy_x_Me answered Tuesday December 27 2005, 8:08 am: I have to say you make a very good point, as this is a very intelligent question. I like what the columnist beneath me had to say.
I'm going to let you know off the bat that I'm one of those people who might shop at Hollister from time to time. Before you write me off, hear what I have to say. Yes, those shorty short skirts could go. I personally would feel naked if I was wearing one of those, and would not allow myself to step into public. And yes those false advertisement shirts are really a nuisance, but atleast no ones forcing YOU to have to wear them.
About the unoriginality, I'm not so sure that's true. Some people have a desire to be noticably different, while others don't nescesarily yearn for it but can still stand out in the crowd. I have to say that if you shop at hollister it does not automatically make you like everybody else. First of all, I think Abercrombie and Fitch is more overdone than Hollister, but I guess that's not the point.
Some people might just throw on a plain old polo and a pair of jeans. Where there are others who might layer and try different colors and maybe a pair of pants that aren't jeans. It depends how creative you are. There are some preppy styles that are more "daring".
And this may come off as strange, but I think the "joy" people get out of wearing these clothes is because they like them. Whether or not you think they're too common, I don't think that's nescesarily true. People can mix and match them with different clothes from other stores. That's the cool part of it. That's what makes it creative.
So maybe it seems unoriginal to you, but just like you might like to wear something a bit outlandish, others like to wear their preppy clothes.
Again...cheeky shorts or mini skirts can go die. They ruin an outfit. They scream for the wrong attention. So let's hope every girl out there that insists on wearing them gets raped by a 53-year-old transexual truck driver.
Just kidding. What I mean is, there's not really much we can do. Just enjoy your style and respect other people's even if it's not your favorite. Clothes is clothes. They're just materials used to conceal ourselves so that we're not completely naked. Where it ever got so complex with 'fashion' and 'style' I do not know. I want you to keep in mind just how a super mini skirt could attract bad attention, so can a very 'different' pair of lime green leggings. It's sort of the same. Just how you think hollister is dreadful, so might someone who saw your different style.
If you wish to be respected, you have to attempt to respect others. Which, you might already be doing. I'm not trying to badmouth your style. I know plenty of people who have the same attitude about fashion or clothes. In fact, you'd get along great with a lot of people I know.
Vexxia answered Tuesday December 27 2005, 4:19 am: I understand completely. I too do not appriciate the bore that is known as the supposed 'in-style'. Though, people are lemmings. So, in the attempt to explain my journey towards tolerance I turn to social philosophy, rather than merely style.
We, as a species, want to be accepted. At the same time we want to be appriciated for our differences, or that which makes us unique. So, in your case and mine, we have a style that speaks "difference". For many others, such as those who shop at hollister or wear the ug-boot, their style says, "I am the same".
So- we are appriciated for a very obvious reason, a will to stand alone, or outside the crowd: it screams individuality, and for that we are wanted. Where as, most people do not of the audacity or courage to assert a visual difference, they assimilate to become wanted.
As well, as a society we are educated to believe that there is a formula for success. Which includes: dress, mannerisms, associations, gender roles and the like. We are led to believe that there is only one type of person, which many will pretend to be, that is appropriate for success or to participate in this culture.
Believe it or not, the real world is just like highschool where we judge people based on their appearances, where they fit in, their class, wealth etc... and you and I... the way we might cringe at mini skirts and popped collars.. they do the same to us. It will never change.
What is important, however, is not to discount peoples personalities based on these visual differences. I've met a handful of wonderful people that participate in sororities, wear polos, and act like paris hilton, but in the end we all have something to learn from eachother- and we shouldn't let (of all things) clothes separate us. After all, we're all naked underneath. HA> hope that helps. [ Vexxia's advice column | Ask Vexxia A Question ]
