Good Books

Question Posted Wednesday October 12 2005, 6:21 am

I'm in the mood to read some good books. Does anybody have any recommendations (preferably from young adult or if not from there than not too boring and old lady like). Thanks!

I don't know anything from YA, but these are definately not boring or old lady-ish.

Fight Club, The Beach, Lord of the Flies

I thought I'd give you some more psycologically deep, and slightly darker books than the other columnists.

HEARTXBREAKER answered Wednesday October 12 2005, 5:45 pm:
I would go for something scary like Remember Me its about a girl who got pushed off a balcony and came back as a ghost and is sad because nobody came to her funeral because they all think she jumped off the balcony and she won't go into the light until she finds out who killed her. If you read it tell me if you liked it.

Dakmor answered Wednesday October 12 2005, 4:54 pm:
Well, my first impulse is to tell you to listen to "The Good Book Song" from "A Mighty Wind" but that's probably too bad a joke for even ME to make. And that's saying something. I'll tell you what I read though:
-Cirque du Freak: Kind of low-level horror book, but it's got a great plot!
-Redwall: Medieval book... and mice are the main characters!
-Harry Potter: Who doesn't know what Harry Potter is?
-Eragon or Eldest: Really cool fantasy books written by a 19 year old. Get Eragon first, and then Eldest.

Yeah. Now for some good authors:
-Mark Twain
-Avi
-Kurt Vonnegut
-Ray Bradbury
-Michael Paolini

Hope I was of any assistance!

EDIT:: Oh! How could I forget? Animal Farm by George Orwell!!! Man, I love that book!

i would suggest if you are into scifi that you read the Lord of the Rings series. Yes they are hard books, i myself and still reading the first one, but they are very good! start with teh hobbit tho, it is easier reading than the other 3. but they are very very interesting and i do believe that you will enjoy them a whole lot! enjoy!

Riiiiight, I've recommended this one on this very column, but it rocks faces so I'll do it again: 'Across the Nightingale Floor' by Lian Hearn. Its the first in a trilogy called 'Tales of the Otori' which are all awesome. Enjoy.

Belladonna answered Wednesday October 12 2005, 8:34 am:
The Shining - Stephen King. He's a great suspense (and fantasy) author. Anything by him is good.

I'd check out some Nicholas Sparks books as well. Especially recommended A Walk to Remember and the Notebook. They're both tearjerker romance stories.

Borrowed Light by Anna Fienberg is a great one. Her writing style is very eloquent, and it's full of many insightful passages. Looking for Alibrandi by Melina Marchetta is a great one for teens. It's studied in a lot of schools, but don't let that put you off as it's a wonderful book. Borrowed Light and Looking for Alibrandi may be difficult to find though as they're Aussie books.

Oh, and you MUST read The Virgin suicides by Jefferey Eugenides. A book will NEVER affect you as much as this one.

Happy reading! Drop one in my inbox if you ever get around to reading them and tell me what you think.

tangerine answered Wednesday October 12 2005, 6:38 am:
Sophie's World by Jostein Gaarder. I read that this summer and its such an amazing book.

And Then There Were None and Endless Night are good thrillers by Agatha Christie.

The Jeeves series by PG Wodehouse is super hilarious, but you have to understand British humor somewhat.

The Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger is really great, don't think its boring just because it's a classic, its a very intersting novel.

I recently read The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon, couldn't put it down.

Hope that helps!
