I do not think that having an eating dissorder is any more a sin than having another kind of mental dissorder. Anorexia is not something you choose to have, but it is your choice to help yourself. Talk to your family, a doctor, or another trusted adult about your problems with food and self image. They can help you get the help that you need.

It's a disease. Not a sin. Anyone can get it.

Does that mean that it's a sin that I have a condition that makes me have panic attacks? Does that mean that God loves me any less, or forced a sin onto me? No. It's something that I can't help, and it's the same with eating disorders.

I consider it a sin. Our bodies are God's temples and we are supposed to take care of them. Having an eating disorder is not taking care of your body.

LoveJoy answered Saturday April 2 2005, 8:43 pm:
If you think that it is a sin, do you think that you will stop doing it? Do you want to stop doing it?

Normally, an eating disorder is an extreme means of finding a way to feel in control, to feel strong and/or above reproach. If you live with the idea that it is a sin, then you will only be feeding the fire that causes it in the first place.

It is not a sin to want to feel okay about yourself. However, we both know that having these eating patterns will kill you before they provide any lasting solution to your feeling bad about yourself. If you want to stop this self-destructive pattern, try thinking in terms of what will motivate you to be healthy, rather than what will make you feel even worse about yourself.

daughterofwily answered Monday March 21 2005, 12:24 am:
That's something you have to answer for yourself, I guess. Personally, I don't think so; it's a disease. I do think it's a sin not to do anything about it, but we sin every day, and God still loves us and forgives us.

But whether it's a sin or not doesn't matter. Bulimia and Anorexia are diseases; they're mental illnesses that need to be treated so that you don't kill yourself. The only thing you should worry about right now is getting treated, if it's you, or getting your friend treated, if it's not you. Pray for them, or for yourself. Confess, if you're of that persuasion, or convince them to confess if they feel it's a sin. Whatever, just GET TREATMENT.

It doesn't matter so much that we sin so long as we try not to again, or try to fix the problem that leads us to it. While I don't think that anorexia or bulimia are immmoral, I can see how others would...and if they make you feel guilty then you should treat them like a sin, and try to repent. Don't worry about the afterlife so much. You're dealing with a potentially fatal condition here; how can you confess and atone if you're too weak to stand?

Missa8305 answered Sunday March 20 2005, 11:00 pm:
Yes. But so is gluttony. And millions of other little things that we do every day without thinking about it. For example: getting angry when someone cuts us off during rush hour traffic. Or becoming impatient with the person ahead of us McDonald's because they are ordering enough food to feed a small country.

God loves you. I may not be the pope, but I think that I have the authority to say that. God is not going to condemn you for not treating your body well.

What you need to focus on is this: depriving yourself of nutrients isn't healthy. You need to be healthy to function normally. If you have an eating disorder, you need to stop worrying about what God thinks of you and get help. I'm sure that's what God wants. He created food for you to eat it :P

Yes, i think it is classified as sin, yeah God gave us the right to make our own choices but that is for our own well being. God says that our bodys arent ours.. but his.. and we are his temples. So hurting it is displeasing to God. And also God made you the way you are.. and you should be happy that way, he wont make you ugly or fat if he knew you couldnt handle that. But I mean you can exercise and get in shape, but throwing up or not eating is not going to help you lose weight.
I hope this helps.

FunnyCide answered Wednesday March 16 2005, 11:20 pm:
I think it is considerd a sin because your body is God's temple, and Jesus said to take care of your body (His temple) so if you're not eating right then you're not taking care of his temple. The same goes for smoking and drinking. It messes you up in the head... but, yes, I do believe that it would be considered a sin because you wouldn't be taking care of your body.
("Don't you know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you? If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him; for God's temple is sacred, and you are that temple."
1 Corinthians 6:19-20) And, if it's not pleasing to God, doesn't that make it a sin already? .. I think so. God bless

Little_Miss_Cant_Be_Wrong answered Wednesday March 16 2005, 9:06 pm:
The Bible doesn't say anything specifically about eating disorders, but it does say that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, you are not your own, you were bought at a price; therefore you should honor God with your body. What this means is that anything that that you purposely do that dishonors or harms your body, that God created, is sort of like an insult to him, and by saying that I don't mean that you intend to harm your body by developing a disorder, I do recognize that it is a real medical disease. But anyways, Jesus paid the ultimate price to save you, by dying on the cross and rising again to pay for your sins, so it is only appropriate to make good use of your body, and I would consider eating disorders detrimental to your body, so seek some professional help. I wouldn't neccessarily call it a sin, I guess, but anyways, even if it is, remember that you have forgiveness through Jesus Christ! I hope that helped. Please don't hesitate to ask me if you have any more questions, or would like to discuss this further.. have a great day!
