Question Posted Monday March 14 2005, 8:04 pm

i was wondering, why are there so many groups in skool? like preps, goths, punks, metalheads, populars, secondary populars, loners, gunks(a mix of punks and goths), and just "others". it all just creates mayhem, like a popular cant go out with a goth, or they will loose all their friends. i think it is so stupid. can you explain to me why people must insist on putting people in different catigories? does it really matter?

I think it's stupid too.People have been doing it for years with bands and now they bring it to the schools!

No it doesn't matter. It is childish to say you can't be friends with a person because of the way they dress, the color of their skin or whatever else they care to name!

I don't know why people do this.immatue I guess.

I think its because people only want to hang around with people like them, and that to me is stupid. They don't really insist its kind of whats happening now a days and I agree with you that its all mayhem. It doesn't matter if there are groups or not.

Has it ever occured to anyone that these groups might arise from people with similar interests hanging out together? I mean, if there's this group of kids who like music that you can't stand, and another group who likes all the music that you love, who would you gravitate towards? It's just a natural instinct to be attracted to things you like. It's human nature, and thats just the way society at large arranges itself. And just as a side note, I think it's ironic that another advice-giver-type-person responded "Labels suck!" and her screen name was "PUNKrockPrincess."

People kind of group themselves by who is like them It's stupid, I agree, but it's how society fuctions. Sometimes people group according to dress, actions, or musical taste. I drift between sluts, gunks, freaks, losers, and artistic weirdos. I dress like goth one day, total prep the next, depending on my mood. Same goes for my musical taste. Black Sabbath... then Britney Spears.

People will always inhibit themselves socially, it's human nature.

"Secondary populars" made me laugh though. I'm always looking for a name for those people.

I hate it when people catergorize me.. but what's ironic, is that YOU have put everyone into a catergory.. There is some sort of unwritten law that hangs over us all the time that we have to be catergorized but I for one insist that I am not a victim of this law and will not be controlled by it. I suggest you do the same. I advocate how I feel all the time about this.. and as much as we try we all tend to catergorize people into neat little packages.. it's just how we function, we can't live with people being unselectable.. unnamed.. It's humanly impossible. I found that you can go with it most of the time, but I know what I'm not.. I'm not a prep, I'm not a goth, maybe I'd fit into the punk catergorie.. but sincerely I believe that I am apart of the individualist catergorie.. just about everyone is against me at my school and I don't feel afraid to share my opinion when I think I'm right.. unless I could get more than just myself in trouble, because really that isn't fair. Anyway, knowing who you are is the key, you don't have to necessarily narrow yourself down to one thing, but know what you aren't.. you don't wanna be a slut, you don't wanna be a stoner.. I think that is what is most important.

if you need anymore advice or explination. I'm always around. :)

Well. its mostly a way of 'beliefs'..Do I agree with it though? No. I mean I fit into the 'other' category..and my current boyfriend was shy of me at first because he fit into the 'jock' category, afraid it will ruin his rep. ..but he eventually grew up and did what was right..did people make fun of him? yes..but those were the immature idiots..dont worry, usually around junior or senior year of high school mostly everyone grows up and realizes that cliques really arent that cool.. time will do wonders :-)

personally, i think its dumb because groups can really hurt someone...in my opinion, i think everyone should all be in one group, instead of having 10 or more different groups. groups start from forming friends...after all the friends are together they are called a group, and they get called the popular group, or the loners.
hope i helped!

Mandee answered Monday March 14 2005, 8:42 pm:
Hah, I've always wondered about that too. What I've learned is that everyone is a bit judgemental. Even if you won't admit to that, we all are. That's just human nature, because our society has grown to judge on everything including people.

When I was in highschool, you could have considered me popular. But as every year past, I just started hanging out with all kinds of people. I think that it's whatever you make it to be. If you're going to listen to them, and do what everyone else does, you're just the same as them. And what improvement does that make? No change, nothing happens. I sat my friends down and told them "Look, if you have a problem with my new friends, you are not any different from everyone else. You say that you're open to new things, but you're just contradicting yourself." If someone tries to make a difference, eventually it will work. So if you're unhappy with the way your school judges people, change it. That's what worked for me. It doesn't matter, honestly, it doesn't.

Love ya!

hey,
theres a whole bunch of cliques [groups] , at my school too.just from your question i can tell your just like me.i think its because in elementry school groups aren't that tight.but when you go to middle school its a whole different universe.over the years us kids have gotten into fights , but what people don't realize that every body's human , we make mistakes.so if you want to be friends with someone in another group your group will hate you.the only way to solve that is by putting your foot down and saying im gonna hang out with them and after that if you dont like it then you were not ment to be my friend.
sincerely ,
megagymnist

I think it's dumb, but people feel more comfortable when they have other people who they feel are just like them that they can hang out with.I think it would prepare us for the future more if everyone hung out with everyone people who are different than them. But thats just high school.

It doesn't matter at all. I am completelty aganist this and so is everyone else in my school. That's why we don't have this. Many teens buy into stero-types and labels. It is pointless just to make people feel worse about themselves or give people big egos. Mostly the so-called "popular" people do this to tell everyone that they are more important when this is totally not true. Make sure you and your friends aviod this egotistic practice. I hope I helped! ♥ good luck

frenchy answered Monday March 14 2005, 8:30 pm:
hey, yeah, well, there isnt really any answer to your question, but i'll try my best to give you my opinion on it. the way i think of it is, people have nothing else better to do than think about others and stuff like that. thus, they make categories for the majorities and the minorities are in "others". that way, its easier to talk about people or certain types of people and make steryotypes. i agree with you, its stupid, but its because people use it to talk, its like their language. "have you seen that hott prep?" thats a common phrase, that way, people dont really have to describe the person further, they already know what kind of person it is by giving them a title such as "prep" "goth" "punk" "nerd"... hope this helped. much love.

What group someone is in makes them them. If they changed them then there is a problem that is why if you switched groups and now is in 2 group you can only really be one person at once. Hope I helped...>3~Chrissie
