Question Posted Monday August 9 2004, 7:11 pm

I have two horses that are the BEST of friends. You can't take one out of the pen without the other. They are stuck like glue, but one is 42 years old! really he is! and the other is at least 30. When one passes away, do you think we should put the other one down? I mean they are both already really old and I know that one would be in MISERY without the other. Just getting an idea if the event might arise.

I would say don't put the other one down unless he is in missery without the other one. When the other one passes, maybe start spending more time with the one htat is still alive. Or you could also start having the two spend less time wiht each other. Maybe put them in 2 seperate pastures that are right next to each other.( just a thought ).
hope i helped

Do not put the other one down... If you can try to get another companion for the left over horse. If you cant, try spending lots of time with the horse so he will get used to being alone. Hope we helped!

No way! You should just pay a whole lot more attention to the other horse. That would be mean to kill the other one because you think it would be sad. Yes the horse does have feelings and it would make the horse sad maybe, but you cant take away its life for that.
hope this helps..

I can't believe you would even think of doing that. When one dies, just spend a lot of time with the other one, maybe get another horse // donkey // pony or something to keep it company. I'm sorry, but that would be absolutely terrible to put an animal down because another animal it was close to passed away.

i am sorry to offend you, but i can believe that you would even think of putting a horse down just because they miss someone they loved. thats like murder. unless the horse is sick, dont put the horse down. thats horrible and un-nessisary.if the one horse will be misrible, then before one passes away, get them used to being alone. put them in seperate paddocks AWAY from each other. if there is no other paddock, then keep one in the barn and one outside, each for half of the day. dont make it sudden, gradually keep them further and further apart. they have to realize that they cannot be togethor forever. in the process, the horses can hurt themselves from rearing or bucking out of anger of being seperated. make sure that someone is there to comfort them, someone they trust, you for instance. when one horse passes away, make sure that you are there for the other horse. if someone is there with the horse, then it will make the seperation easier. also keep the horse preoccupied with things they like to do. you could also get another animal to keep the horse company. such as a goat; many horses have companions of a different species.

hope i helped! rate me please :) if you want to talk more about horses, please feel free to aim ixsavedxmyself :)

No, I think after one passes on you should just get another companion horse. It will take time but theres no reason to be putting down a healthy horse, its actually kinda cruel. So when sadly one does pass away, get a little pony that can be his/her companion or something. Or a good idea would be getting one before one of them passes away so that the both of them can start making friends with him/her. Its just a thought.

Good luck xoxo

Well..i went through a similar situation a couple years back. When i was growing up we had two cats that were like sisters. One was about 4 years older though. Surprisingly..the younger one got cancer and there was nothing we could do so we had to get her put to sleep. After noticing she was gone..the older cat got really sad and stopped eating and drinking and she almost died herself. The vet told us that when you have pets that are really close, and one dies..you need to show the body of the one that passed to the other animal so they can know what happened..and get over it. Since my cat never figured out what happened..she is still very depressed. DO NOT put the living one to sleep if one dies. That is cruel. If your best friend or family member died you wouldnt kill yourself. You would accept it..mourn..and move on.

I hate to sound like a geek, but in the story "where the red fern grows" its about 2 hunter dogs who are also best friends. and when one died from being attacked, the other dog died of a broken heart. So maybe that could happend to your horses. I hope they stay healthy though! :)

Not to make you feel bad or anything, but that is extremely mean to think about doing. You can't just kill an animal because it's friend dies. Instead, why don't you think about how your going to need to give the younger horse extra love and attention. Would your grandmother want you to just kill her when your grandfather passes away? You should care about and love your horse just as much as if he/she was a part of the family.

Well, I think when one of the horses dies you should just really watch the others behavior. It might take a while for the other horse to adjust but he might be fine but if he doesn't adjust at all then I think it would be best to put him down. I know that's a hard thing to do but it will be best for the other horse. I hope this helps!
