Depends on the story. For fantasy go for unusual, exotic names. Make them up yourself! You can find names on BabyNameCenter.com, which has an entire section on unusual names.

Here are some of my favorite names for girls:
Elle
Alexis
Jade
Larkin
Eve
Natasha
Kennedy
Kinsey

with fantasy, it's fun to take normal names and spell them oddly. Like Maddilynn instead of Madeline, or combine two names, like Natalyn made out of Natalie and Madeline. You can also change them in minor ways, like Brianni instead of Brianna.

Firefly answered Thursday February 26 2004, 8:51 pm:
well, it depends on what type of story you're writing - fantasy, coming of age, whatever. i would suggest first shaping out your characters; like, are they going to be fun-loving, antisocial, nerdy, whatever. figure out what they will be like. then you should look up on baby name websites.

if you're writing fantasy, you should probably go for a more exotic name. baby name websites, again, are good. so are foreign language translators (like [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)). you can also change around real names (like Cassandra into Cassandrae, or Loraine into Lorrenne) or just randomly put together letters (Like Ahrillis or Daemin). you can also use very cool sounding words (like Cloud, though i wouldn't suggest using that since there's a video game character with that name).
