I came here to answer computer questions. (This used to say "...and nothing more.")

What I meant was, I don't know how much help I would be with other things... NOT that I would be upset if you asked a non computer question!

I managed to recover my Solidadvice4teens account when you reminded me of the livetolove2009@live.ca account. I logged into that email account with the last password I remembered and reset my password for Advicenators. I'll use this one and not use the other Solidadvice2021 one.

I have had a number of dogs over the years ranging from a beagle/lab who was big named Pepper and two smaller dogs Sandy and Max who are pug crosses one a Jack Russell/Pug and the other a Pug/Shih Tzu.

I don't remember the incident about what they used to do when they went out. I think the smaller dog has urinated on the bigger dog before. It's been 15 years since I got them and the bigger one is dead.

I don't have a Yahoo account. I had hotmail of which I cannot access with the 2005@hotmail.com address of which you mentioned. That should be what you need to blend both accounts together but I'm fine with sticking to solidadvice4teens now that I figured out my password again. (link)
I am glad you were able to get in on your old e-Mail. You are all good on the proof, since you were sending this from your original account. :-)

However, just for fun, here are the questions I pulled those questions from: The yahoo account you don't have:

http://www.advicenators.com/qview.php?q=518243

... and the dog incident:

http://www.advicenators.com/qview.php?q=545391

I figured if I went back that far, only you would know. ;-)

If all goes well, your accounts will be merged by the time you read this.

Thanks for all your help over the years!

Hey there,

I'm actually Solidadvice4teens and have been registered since 2006 and contribute advive frequently. When I was using ZOOM for an online class two weeks ago my MacBook had a complete meltdown forcing me to have Apple tech support help me to downgrade from Big Sur to the previous operating system which fixed the problem.

In the process nothing including saved passwords for this site and others were kept. I cannot tell you what email account I had back then and registered under nor the login details.

How can I show you that I'm the same person? Can both Solidadvice4teens and Solidadvice2021 be merged somehow? (link)
Hi there,

I am very sorry for your tech troubles! It is heartbreaking when you think about all the digital things you could lose access to.

You are important to this site, and to me personally, and we will make this happen. I doubt someone with an identical writing style would show up and try to get me to do this... But, for legal reasons, we need to do what we can to prove you are you. Here is my solution:

You had a yahoo account: g****r*****s2005

Reply in a new question with that, and the following:

Once upon a time you had two dogs... every time they went out to do their business one of them would come back in in a certain state. You eventually watched them go out and found out why that was happening. Also, they were both mixed breed dogs, one big, one little.

What breeds were they, and what was happening to the one when they went out.

Also, if it helps, the e-mail address on your SA4T account is: livetolove2009(you should know the rest).ca if you still have access to that.

I look forward to your response.

DN

I've tried all that stuff. I can't even get into my computer!
What do you suggest? (link)
If you can't get into your computer, there is nothing else you can do. You will need to take it in for service. The technician will have tools to handle this.

I wish there was something else you could do on your own, but the next step is fairly technical.

Good luck to you!

DN.

I was on my pc this morning when a porno page popped up and a prompt saying I need to call a number and pay $100. I didn't pay it and all the advice on the Internet didn't help. Is there a cd/dvd virus removal I can buy? (link)
Hi there,

You may not need to go that far. It is possible that a web page you visited is corrupted, and has taken over your browser.

There may not be anything actually ON your computer, unless you clicked and said it was ok to install new software about the time this showed up.

Here is your first step: Press ctrl-alt-delete at the same time, and open task manager. Your should see your web browser in the list of tasks.

Select the web browser, and then click End Task.

Restart your browser, and when it comes up and asks you if you want to restore your previous session... SAY NO!

If you have your browser set to open the tabs and windows you had open before you closed it, things get more complicated.

In most cases lately, what I described should be all you need.

No matter WHAT... Do NOT ever... EVER call those numbers or pay them anything. It is a scam 100% of the time.

Please let me know in feedback, how you make out.

Also, when you are done, please install the free version of MalwareBytes, or SuperAntiSpyware and run a complete scan of your computer to remove anything else that may be hanging around.

All the best,

DN.

I have a single page website (for the most part). You can either scroll down or click on menu buttons to go directly to different parts of the page. I want to use a tracking tool like HotJar but will it work with a single page? Will it know the various sections of my page?? (link)
This is something you can easily accomplish with hotjar by selecting the proper page change tracking settings:

https://docs.hotjar.com/docs/hotjar-on-single-page-apps

... That is for the menu clicks to new targets, if you want to track the scrolling, you will likely need to use a javascript trigger to signal that there is a location change.

Hope that helps.

ANY CHANCE YOU HAVE DRAFTPAK FOR CADKEY 98 wmbabs@aol.com (link)
Hello there,

The only place I can suggest you look is the company that bought out CADKEY, Kubotech, which you can find here:

http://kubotek3d.com/Products/CADKEY.aspx

They may have a source for it.

I have seen some machinists forums trading the software as abandonware, though I don't know is valid or not:

http://www.practicalmachinist.com/vb/cad-cam/cadkey-98-a-244551/

All the best, and happy drafting! :-)

I do not why, but my PC can't install updates. PC shows me some problems there and that i must reload PC. I doing that and then the same - happened nothing. What's wrong? (link)
Hi there,

Please explain what error message you are getting when "my PC can't install updates" so that we can attempt to help you. The error message is the key to explaining the problem and the solution to same.

My computer is telling me that my AppData/Local/Microsoft/Windows/Burn/Burn file is corrupted, as seen in the link below:
http://i58.tinypic.com/30u48so.jpg
I've ran the check/repair it tells me to, but it doesn't fix it, and says something about a program I downloaded that's preventing the check/repair to finish. How can I fix this?

I'm not even sure what this file is, is it safe to just delete it? (link)
Hi there,

If you didn't check the box to scan for and repair bad sectors, you should run the utility again and do so.

Before you even do that, you should back up and files you wish to keep, simply because errors like this are frequently a sign of impending drive failure.

Please read this thread:

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista/755465-error-0x80070570.html

... and go here to run the utility they are talking about:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/startup-repair-faq#1TC=windows-vista

If you need any further help, please let me know, and provide as many details as you can when you do. Things like which version of windows you are running.

I wish you the best!

Dangernerd, Adviceman49 here; I am unable to log in and the system is saying it does not know me when I asked for a password rest.

Could you Email me a toolguy105@yahoo.com with instructions how to get back in.

Hi there,

I have e-mailed you directly, and sent you a password reset notice as well.

So, my current laptop is basically dead, and we think there's really nothing we can do, so now I am looking for a new one.

I will be using this laptop mostly for school (reports, online resources, etc.), e-mail, web browsing, and gaming (Yeah, I'm sort of a nerd so I would like it to be a good computer for gaming). I might also want to have a 2-in-1 laptop and tablet.

My budget is about $250-$400, so any suggestions in that price range?

I would also like to know if anyone has had experience with intel Pentium? I have found some 2-in-1 laptop/tablets I like for $350, but my brother says intel Pentium isn't any good. Any thoughts? The brand is HP, is that a good brand?

Thanks for reading, any suggestions? (link)
Hi there,

Sadly, there isn't much for a gaming laptop in that price range. Sure, you can run a lot of games with reduced graphics settings and get by just fine, but if you intend to run the graphics at higher quality settings, you will need a machine with a dedicated graphics card. You can find some of those second hand around $500, but if you intend to buy new, they are way out of the budget you stated. For example, AlienWare, which is famous for gaming laptops, among other things, has a sale going on that would get you into one for $1,099, but it isn't a 2-in-1. This would let you game though.

http://www.alienware.com/

... in case you want to look anyway. :-)

Your brother is absolutely right about AMD being better than Intel... up until about 6 years ago when they released a newer series of CPUs that AMD has never been able to top.

It pains me to say that, it really does, but the fact of the matter is that performance per watt of power use is firmly in the Intel camp now.

As for the use of the word Pentium there, I would agree that for higher end use, such as gaming, you would prefer a Core5 or better chip, but once again, your budget won't allow that.

You would be surprised how well the dual core Pentium chips will run most everything you want to these days. I kinda wish they had invented a new name for their mid-level chips, since Pentium has a bit of a stigma attached, but these aren't the old Pentium chips from 1996, in fact, for the money, they are pretty amazing.

Speaking for my own experience, I haven't had a lot of luck with HP laptops. When I had my own shop, more out of warranty HP's came through than anything else.

Having said that, there is a problem with all laptops: They cost more to fix than you would even believe. As long as you buy the longest warranty you can get, you will end up ok no matter what you buy as long as it is a major brand.

I have had good fortune with Acer, Toshiba and Dell, in that order.

All the best.

P.S. Why did you rate that previous answer as not being helpful? I would watch that, since it was an honest opinion, and a good answer on the whole. Ratings abuse gets you banned from theis site... just a friendly heads-up. :-)

Can I install two different versions of Microsoft Office on the same computer? And will they both work? (link)
Hi there,

It is possible, but Microsoft doesn't advise you to do so. Here are a couple threads on it from the microsoft Knowledgebase:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/218861

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290576

... these have almost entirely the same content except for some tweaks for specific versions that only one or the other address.

All the best with this!

Finally PayPal was able to correct a problem this morning that restricted my ability to use it. I always new they saw me as my so which as it finally turned out after an hours worth of discussion they admitted to. So they corrected the problem and my payment to you is on the way. I apologize for the delay I just needed to work up a head of steam to argue with PayPal . (link)
Hi there,

I was glad to give you that paid account in return for all your help. You do not need to pay for it, but if you insist, every little bit helps. :-)

Glad you got your situation with paypal resolved. They can be less than fun to deal with.

My macbook is 6 months old. Even in just normal usage (surfing the Net, perhaps with a Word document open and iTunes playing), the computer gets too hot to keep on my lap and I can hear the fan blowing kind of loud.
(link)
Hi there,

These are famous for cooking themselves to death. They weren't really thinking about ventilation when they did the case design, and sadly, for all that money, you are the one that suffers. :-(

A quick search for:

only search advicenators.com

... will show you that you are far from alone.

About the only thing you can do is purchase a laptop cooling pad, and use it every time. Even this, only helps so much, because of the way the case is designed, but it will help you avoid burns on your legs.

This issue has driven even hardcore Mac users to only use Mac at home, and take a chromebook, or Windows based laptop with them on the road. Perhaps Apple should fix this, eh?

The cooling pad is your friend. If you are going to keep this computer, you need one to avoid one form of unpleasantness or another.

I have a thirteen inch macbook pro running on 10.9.1 and it has been getting so incredible slow lately. Netflix will lag where the characters words will still go while the actions will fall behind. I will also scroll down and the screen won't move for a good five seconds. It's getting so annoying. Any ideas on what to do? I can't keep restarting it every time it happens. (link)
Hi there,

I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but this is a long-time known issue that apple hasn't fixed in some years now.

Worse yet, the causes, and solutions are so varied that it is hard to predict which one, or combo will work for you, if any. :-(

Having said that, here are the things I know of that people have used to successfully achieve a macbook pro lag fix:

In the order that are easiest to do:

If it all seems web-related: Please, if you are using safari, try installing another web browser. For many people this was the fix.

Try disabling bluetooth.

Try creating a new account, and see if while you are logged into that account the lag issue remains.

If it does, move on. If it doesn't, you have a corrupt file in your old account's profile. You can move things one at a time to the new account, or you could backup the files you personally created on the machine and restore to factory settings, then try again.

If none of those things make a dent, it is time to think about overheating. Does your MBP start doing this after it has been on for a while? Runs fine until it heats up?

Could be a dead/wounded cooling fan, or heatsink inside full of dust.

If that isn't it, there is one really odd thing that has helped many people: Apple had a problem with the supplier of their hard drive cables, which left some of them being intermittent. This leaves the computer trying to communicate with the drive and having to re-send info over and over due to error conditions. Eventually it just fails. When it fails, it fails ugly. Drive corruption is common.

If you get through all that, and have no luck, I can only point you to the Apple Store / S.O.S. Apple hotline.

Please let me know which of these was the solution for you, so I can better help the next person. Take heart: The browser swap to Chrome or Firefox fixes things for most people.

Where can you buy a touch screen monitor for using with windows 8? I bought a new computer, and my old monitor isn't touch, of course. So I went to walmart and they didn't have anything but regular screens. Can you only get them if you buy them the same time you buy the computer? (link)
Hi there,

Actually you can buy touch-screen monitors at any time you like. Many people don't like Windows 8, and that is the reason I think there aren't more retail stores carrying a wide variety of monitors.

Here is a list of windows 8 compatible monitors at:

TigerDirect:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/campaigns/deals.asp?campaignid=2661&CatId=12&sel=Detail%3B47_1061_3359_3359&cm_re=Monitors-_-Spot%2003-_-Touchscreen

Newegg:

http://www.newegg.com/Touchscreen-Monitors/SubCategory/ID-514

Don't let some of the prices scare you... they are available in all price ranges, just scroll down, or sort the list by lowest price first. :-)

Oh, and if you are determined to buy one at wal*mart, here is a list from their website, that you can have delivered to the store for you to pick up:

http://www.walmart.com/search/search-ng.do?search_query=touch+screen+monitor&ic=16_0&Find=Find&search_constraint=3944

I seen your answer to another problem like this, but i use Chrome, and my internet sound isnt working although my normal media player is?? can you tell me how to fix this?? please (link)
Hi there,

There are a couple possibilities: There has been a recurring bug in Chrome that has caused this. It has been going on for years now, and is just completely unbelievable that it isn't fixed yet. Here is the most recent post I know of:

http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/chrome/e1y-Zd4zL6E%5B1-25-true%5D

... So, if you have a realtek sound chip in your machine, make sure that your sound is set to stereo, and, in theory, it should work.

Also make sure that you don't have the volume slider for chrome muted:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZsvtbUzKes

(It is ok if the sound doesn't work, just do what he does in the video.)

Beyond that, you can do what I do, and that is use FireFox until they fix this... again... and again, and again. This is enough to make me give up on Chrome. Not that there is a bug, but that there is a bug that keeps coming back for a period of years now.

I hope you get it sorted, and the Chrome team gets this sorted out. Otherwise I really love the browser.

I have the Kindle Fire second generation (System Version: 10.3.0_user_3012920). It was working just fine and I was watching some videos on it, youtube, listening to music that uploaded from my computer and reading just fine. All of a sudden, today, I went to a website to look at some videos and it told me, "No plug-in available to display this content." What happened? I haven't done anything out of the ordinary to it (that I know of). What do I need to do to be able to look at videos again? The youtube is fine, it's videos from websites that are getting this grey puzzle piece. Thank you. (link)
Hi there,

Most likely, the plug-in isn't disabled... it is probably a content type that either the kindle can't play at all (like the iPad can't play flash files) or is a plug-in that you haven't installed yet. Tap the puzzle piece on that page and see if you get a prompt to install a plug-in, or more information on the missing item.

If you still have issues, you might want to visit the Amazon Kindle Q&A forum:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/forums/kindleqna

So, a while back, I installed something and somehow, an AOL toolbar got attached to this and is now constantly appearing on my browser. It's always changing my homepage and trying to make me use the AOL search engine and I do not want this.
I tried to go to the control center to uninstall it, but it's not available there. I also went to the Firefox add-ons section to see if I could delete it there, but I can't find anything.

Is there anyway to delete this? Because it's driving me insane. (link)
Hi there,

Please make sure you first go here:

http://help.aol.com/help/microsites/microsite.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=12619

... and follow all the steps listed for your browser.

When it comes to removing this thing there are usually three parts:

AOL Toolbar

AOL Download Updater

Price Check by AOL

You are going to want to look for these in your add/remove programs area, as well as the firefox add-ons section.

Remove any of them that you see.

Make SURE to click on the toolbar's "edit" function, right beside the AOL logo, usually, and select "more" then uninstall.

That should be the end of it.

If not, let me know, and we will go from there.

Thanks,

DN.

My indicator for questions of mine that others answered went off. It shows you answered me but not the actual answer itself. Not sure why I'm not seeing any text. Sorry about that. Definitely want to see what you wrote about the radio question. (link)
Hi there,

I wouldn't normally answer something you marked deleted, but I really need to know what happened with the answer situation.

I tried it in multiple browsers/versions, etc, and I could not make it fail to show an answer no matter what I did.

Could you please explain how you solved this issue, just in case there is something that needs tweaking on this end?

Thank you,

DN.

I have another technology question for you and hope you don't mind answering it for me. You're incredibly knowledgeable and easy for me to understand hence why I come to you again.

I'm going to be interviewed on a radio show this week that is is on a small community station with a low range frequency. This means you can listen to it at home or in the car but only within the town limits it was recorded in as the antenna only reaches a small town.

The station has an Internet presence and stream though. My mother is a 24/7 nurse and unable to listen in on WI-FI as her workplace and client is private and at 92 is not equipped with Internet or Wi-FI nor is the senior citizen's building he lives in. She has been their 6 weeks as he's had a major operation and cannot get the frequency.

While I don't want to do anything illegal here or violate copyright I was wondering if there were some way I could capture the Internet stream on a cassette or CD-RW from that for her this weekend? Is there free and reliable software and in do you have easy instructions for how to do so?

Alternatively, I can get the frequency on my IPOD dock from Sony but for some reason my tape/deck stereo can't bring it in while the dock/clock radio can. Are their cords or a device that I could use? If not I will wait and see if I can get a CD from them sometime soon for her to enjoy. (link)
Hi there,

Thanks for the kind words, and no I don't mind the question.

Man did you ask the right person! ;-) I have been on radio interviews quite a number of times, and, if you will allow me, I would like to simplify this whole process for you:

Recording a streaming broadcast from home/office while you are being interviewed live is... frankly, CURSED!

You simply would not believe the number of tools, times and ways I had tried this when I was a little younger, and had yet to figure out the real answers for this. Time after time, application after another fails in one way or another.

So, one time I brought my digital recorder with me and asked if they would mind me getting the whole thing from the studio side. They didn't mind at all, and this was a big corporate monster station with a legal team of their own, so I cannot believe that a small town station would object.

The other thing I figured out pretty early on in my experimenting with the recording disasters: Don't invite headaches where there aren't any!

Simply tell them what you told me: "My mom would like to hear this, but she is working and not able to listen. Would you mind making me a copy on cd-r? I would be happy to pay for it."

I have never had anyone accept money in a situation like that.

I had a look around to see what is going on with the state of internet stream recorders these days, and I see nothing much has changed:

There are free programs, that are pretty easy to use, but they are bundled with horrific spyware.

There are free programs that will do the job just fine, if you have the time to learn them. (Which, at this point, with a couple days remaining, you probably don't.)

There are paid programs that work just fine, but are spendy for something you may only use once.

Mostly, there are a LOT of "free" programs listed that either don't work at all, or barely function, but either way their main reason for being is to install spyware/adware on your system.

As for your home stereo not picking this up, you may not have an adequate antenna connected to it. A simple fm dipole antenna would probably get the job done, and they can be had for very little money, or, if you are handy and have the wire laying around, can be made in a few minutes.

only search advicenators.com

Also, just to cover the bases: If your ipod dock has an audio out jack, you may be able to cable your dock, to your cassette deck's line in jacks with one of these:

only search advicenators.com

... which I would be surprised if you don't have laying around from something else already. If not, these too can be had cheap and should be in every cable arsenal. :-)

Having pointed you towards those items, I still suggest that you ask for a recording from them directly and/or bring your own digital recorder when you come to the studio.

If you feel like sharing, send me a copy on skype. I like to hear what the site's long time users are up to. :-)

Best of luck on your radio interview!

DN.

P.S. The nerves are normal, even if this isn't your first time. Helpful hint: Look directly into the eyes of whomever you are talking to, and focus there, completely wiping the mics and all from your mind. It helps.

P.P.S. Sorry if there is anything odd written here, you caught me just heading out the door and I didn't have time to proof-read this.
