about

I've been away for a while due to a serious illness and subsequent health issues.

Favourite quotes of the moment:

The children of Israel wandered the desert for 40 years - Even in biblical times men wouldn't ask for directions!

Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. whatever we do to the thread, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect. - Chief Seattle.

We spend the first 12 months of a child's life teaching them to walk and talk. We spend the next 12 years telling them to sit down and shut up!

As you slide down the bannisters of life, may the splinters never be pointing the wrong way.

May you be in Heaven half an hour before the devil knows you're dead.

I've been very happily married since August 1980 to a wonderful man and have beautiful twin girls, now aged 31. Both are married to wonderful young men and one of our girls has recently made us grandparents to a beautiful, smart and feisty granddaughter. I studied geology with the Open University. I am retired from being a manager in a large UK based insurance company which I actually quite enjoyed. (How sad is that?). I love anything to do with the environment and wildlife and try to do my bit for preservation and conservation. I would like there to be a decent world for our grandchildren to inherit. I also have CFS so find life a bit of a challenge at times but always hope for better health in the future.

I have a deep interest in the spiritual and the paranormal worlds, having experienced several incidents myself, and have been involved in meditation groups and groups that (safely) explore the paranormal. There is more to this life than we would normally credit, so an open mind is always the best option. You're not so likely to get caught by surprise!

I have a deep fascination for anything to do with Ancient Egypt, as you can probably tell by my name. I have statues and paintings all around the house. As my hubby has a similar interest in Native Americans, we tend to have a lot of unusual wall decorations, like a tomahawk.

I love cars, especially vintage ones, but my all time favourite has to be the Bugatti Chiron, what a car!

I have had a lot to do with animals over the years. I have fostered many, helped to set up a wildlife charitable hospital and raised a diverse range of young animals from bats to fox cubs and different species of birds, even a baby deer! I have had great pleasure in sharing my life and home with a number of animals over the years, most of them rescues. I am currently sponsoring an Amur Tiger, they are such beautiful cats and desperately need help, there are so few of them left. I was lucky enough a couple of years ago to meet some Aye-Aye's and Livingstone's Bats, a truly wonderful experience. We now have three cats, Oliver and Mollie, a brother and sister, he's a ginger and she's a tortoiseshell and a black and white called Daisy. She arrived in a taxi and was left on our doorstep in a cat carrier with the message that 'they knew we loved cats and would be good to her'. She has settled down well and gets on wonderfully with the other two.

If you have a pet that is showing ANY signs of illness or distress, please, please, please take it to a vet! Even if finance is an issue, work that out later. It is cruel to leave an animal suffering for any reason. Most animals do not show signs of illness until they have been ill for some time, basic instinct tells them it is a display of vulnerability, and certain death in the wild. Their instincts have not caught up with domesticity.

I do feel that we should all treat others as we would wish to be treated. Bad karma comes back to haunt us.

advice

is there anywhere in the united kingdom that the queen cant go?? my teacher asked that in a quiz and i want to kno.
thanx

The Queen is entitled to go anywhere she pleases in the UK. She may advised against some places if it's felt there may be a security risk or if it could be seen as a political indiscretion.

I have a 3 year old cockapoo, 20 pounds, female
She keeps shivering and shaking, even if we keep her in a blankets and bedding. Her nose is fairly warm. Besides this, she's acting like herself. When she's playing and romping around she won't shiver. Do I need to take her to the vet? Thank you very much.

Dogs will shiver and shake if they have a back or neck injury as this seems to bother them more than any other.

They will also do this if they have been frightened, feel nervous or are of a timid nature.

The other reason is if they are cold. Even if they are wrapped up, it could take half an hour to an hour for them to feel warm enough to stop shaking. As you say she's fine when she's playing, it sounds as though you can rule out injury and the exercise would warm her up. If she's been recently clipped, it is very likely the cold that is affecting her. You could look at getting her a dog coat to keep her warm and not have her clipped again until the weather improves.

If she still shows signs of shivering if you do keep her warm, she starts to look unhappy or shows other symptoms of ill health, she needs to see a vet. You could always call and ask to speak to someone just to be safe. It's never worth taking a chance with an animal's health and well being.

All of the sudden i have been getting dizzy! Last night i woke up really dizzy and naucious then it went away after a couple hours and i went back to bed but throughout today i will suddenly just get kinda dizzy and my head will spin and i have to steady myself. not like im gonna fall over or anything but i will just have to refocus. This has never happened before and i didnt chage anything to make it possibly happen so does anyone knoe why this might be happening or how to help me??? Thanks SO much! I will rate all helpful posts! :)

There could be many reasons for this happening. For example, viral infections, anaemia, vertigo, low blood pressure, stress and migraines can all cause dizziness and nausea. These are just a few of the ailments. If it continues you need to see a doctor as they are best placed to give you a proper diagnosis.

nearly every day for the past two weeks i've had severe migraines. I'm used to getting pretty bad ones, but not for 2 weeks in a row. I know i have to go see a doctor about them, but until then anyone know why this could be happening? Does stress cause migraines? And what can i do to ease the pain a bit? because there's only so much aspirin i can get, and i'm in school so its not like i can just drop everything and go to sleep every time this happens.

15/f

Migraines are really horrible to have to deal with especially if you experience 'cluster migraines', which put simply are several of them in a short space of time.

You are correct you do need to see your doctor about them as there are many causes, stress is one of them, and may need investigation.

I've included a website that gives you more information on what causes them and ideas on how to manage and relieve them.

i went to the doctor for a check up a few weeks ago and got the results back today, and it said that my cholesterol was 217 and triglyceride level was 171. I know that's not good but i really don't know what to do about it. I'm 15 and my cholesterol has been kind of high since i was about 13, but its not like i'm not active or anything. I swim competitively and play softball. My dad's side of my family has a history of high cholesterol so could most of it be hereditary? I mean yes I do eat sugary foods but I think I balance my diet out pretty well since I also eat a lot of fruits and grains. What should I do?

15/f

Your doctor will be the best person to advise you on the steps you need to take. However, there are yoghurts, yoghurt drinks, margerines etc that are designed to lower cholesterol, so you could try them as well. High colesteral can be hereditary so it's good that you want to take action now to reduce your levels.

Before you do anything though, see your doctor, as they need to know what you are planning and can offer support and advice.

It is called quinoa or something like that I was told it keeps you REALLY full and I wanna know where I can get it and how to make it.

You can buy it in health food shops and you could also get it on on line. Although as I prefer to see food before I buy it I get it from a shop.

It is a good nutritious food with lots of protein, it's also low in allergens. You can put it in lots of things so I've added a website with recipe ideas.

I have bronchitis. The only way to get better is to take these very strong antibiotics my doctor gave me. The only problem is, i have a sensative stomach and the antibiotics are giving me horrible horrible diarhea. I'm sorry if this grosses you out, I just need to know if there is anything I could eat or do that would ease me body's reaction to the antibiotics.

Some antibiotics are harder on the gastro-intestinal tract than others. You could try going back to your doctor and explaining how they are affecting you. If you are getting diarrhoea that badly, it is possible the tablets are not staying in your body long enough to be truly effective and need to be changed. Some foods/drinks can also react with medication so it would be useful to check that out as well.

On a side note, recent research suggests that caffeine acts as a bronchial dilater, so if you drink a cup of coffee a day, and avoid dairy products whilst you are ill,(milk in particular can congest the lungs), you may recover faster.

What have been some major conflicts of Great Britain in the past, that aren't connected to America, and affected a lot of different classes of people?
All I can find are conflicts having to do with the colonists and all that jazz.
If you have anything that would really be great.
Thanks a bunches of oats! =]

The English Civil War 1642-1651, was between the Parlimentarians (Roundheads), led by Oliver Cromwell and the Cavaliers who supported the Royal Family. Briefly, in 1649 following some battles, Charles I was executed on the orders of Cromwell, the only British monarch this happened to (so far)! A Commonwealth was then established and Cromwell made himself Protector, becoming pretty much the same as the king before him.

The main thing that the Civil War did for the country was to stop the idea of the divine right of kings. Before this, kings thought they had been appointed by God and ruled absolutely. When Cromwell died and Charles II eventually came to the throne, he ruled with the consent of Parliment. This was more firmly established later in the century and is a situation that has continued to this day. Oliver Cromwell was also responsible for the formate of government.

I've given you a link with more information if you need it.

OK...I want to leave my husband. He doesn't beat me or anything like that, we are just in a loveless marriage. I work a part time job right now, only making minimum wage. I was just wondering if anyone could tell me the steps I need to take on getting out on my own? Like, where do I find low income housing & things like that. I have 3 children by the way. Thanks for any advice you can give.

Im so sorry your marriage hasn't worked out. You do need to talk to him about this if you haven't already.

Look in local newspapers for house/apartment rentals. See if there is a housing association who could help. Go and see your local council to see if there is a housing list. Check out any advertisments in shop windows. Ask around, you may find word of mouth could get you a place before it gets into the papers.

If it's an amicable split you may find that your husband will help with the finances, in he should anyway with regard to the children.

You don't say how old the children are but if there are after school clubs or someone that can share after school childminding, you could increase your working hours to help with costs. Perhaps you could look for a better paying job?

You need to look at splitting the household into what is yours and his, although be warned, this can get messy emotionally and verbally. You also need to look at whether you have to take furnishing with you and decide what.

If you have joint bank accounts and both of your names on all the bills you will need to sort this out. If you don't take your name off bills and your husband should default on any, you could be liable for some, or all, of the repayments even though you are no longer together.

You need to prepare the children, let them know that although mom and dad don't love each other any more, nothing will ever stop both of you loving them. The chances are that if they are older than toddlers, they will have picked up that all is not well in the house.

Just be totally sure you are making the right decision, it's very hard to go back after taking such a massive step. Maybe try family councilling first?

Ok, i'm kind freaking out about this...
but I keep crying only through one eye.
Randomly, like out of nowhere.. tears are just coming out and it's weird! I'm worried. It justs get teary and turns red. But goes away, and is normal and then just comes back.
I wear contacts by the way.

You may have an infection in that eye. If you do, you need to see a doctor as they should give you antibiotic drops for it. Don't touch the weepy eye and then touch the other one as this can lead to cross contamination, this would also apply to make up applicators.

If you have glasses you should wear them rather than the contacts until you have seen your doctor, as if it is an infection, the contacts could be making it worse.

I think I have a cavity again. I have had like 4 or 5. Is that like WAY too many? I brush twice a day, almost every day- like at least 4-5 times a week. But I at least brush once a day everyday. But there is a reason why I have had so many. Ever since I was like 5 or 6, I have had canker sores- like HUGE ones- ALL THE TIME. I almost always had at least one in my mouth that was giant. Nowadays -I am 15 now by the way- I dont get them quite so often, maybe once a month, but when I do get them I get them BAD, and if I get one then it spreads all over my mouth and I have at least 3 or 4 at a time. This is the most painful experiance ever and this all relates back to the cavity thing because when I get these sores, It hurts WAAAAAAAAAY to bad to brush in certain areas. I have tried every OTC drug there is for this and every type of toothpaste. there is one toothpaste and thats how I started to control them, but still I think this is what is causing my cavities. right now I just got a sore spot on my tooth and I looked and there is a little hole there. I HATE going to the dentist because I dont want them to think I am disgusting and have no oral hygeine. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!! is there any prescription drug or something while I am brushing to numb the pain or does anyone know of ANYTHING??? I have had these since I was five and I am so frustrated and hopeless. Thanks if you have any advice. Oh yeah and here is a pic of what one would look like similar to mine.

http://www.aidsmeds.com/images/canker.jpg

yeah but I have that^ times 4 all at the same time
I just wanna cut my mouth off. :(

yeah thanks anyways

Some people have teeth that are more prone to cavities as their teeth are not so strong. My dentist said that the whiter the teeth the higher the chances of cavities as they are thinner.

Your dentist is unlikely to think you are disgusting as you are practising oral hygiene whenever pain allows you. He should understand the issues you have been having and may be able to suggest some ways of managing of this problem.

If you can get it where you are, Bonjela is a local anaesthetic especially for the mouth that should numb the area while you brush.

Are you being too vigorous with your brushing? If you do not have one, try an electric toothbrush as this reduces the chances of injury from excessive brushing.

Another thing to bear in mind with mouth ulcers is that they can sometimes be a sign of a health problem and if you have one, you can find they can then spread to other areas of your mouth. Whether this is due to a vitamin or iron deficiency or a condition like Coeliacs Disease, you need to get yourself checked out by a doctor to make sure.

If you can rule out any health problems, you can then look at management and your dentist, again, should be able to help with this. Dentists are more than patch them up or pull them out people these days. They have a great knowledge of all things to do with the mouth, not just the teeth.

You don't need to suffer like this any more, there is help out there for you. Take your courage in both hands and go and see your dentist.

who sings that song that goes like:

..................killing me softly with his words..........

and its a re-make

If you mean the song Killing Me Softly, it was originally by Roberta Flack and covered by the Fugees.

i still havent gotten my period, for all the people that answered my questions before.

im really getting more and more nervous as it goes on. are you POSITIVE this is normal?

If it hasn't arrived by the time you reach 16 you need to see a doctor as there could be a problem. You don't say how old you are but girls are all different in their development.

If you are under 16 enjoy your life without periods while you can, as when they do arrive they can cause a lot of discomfort.

**************************************************
Edit

That's not what you said, you inferred that you hadn't had one at all. It would be helpful if in the future you were more specific with your questions.

i wear clogs and they kinda smell.. what can i do?

Dust the insides with Bicarbonate of Soda and leave them overnight. They should be ok in the morning as Bicarbonate of Soda absorbs smells.

so my family is a little low on money and i was wondering what are some ways to keep the house warm since it is getting close to fall and winter.. i dont want to put the heat up high because that will cost too much

Make sure there are no draughts blowing through the house as that will lower the temperature. Draught excluders will work if there are gaps under doors. You can make them if you have to with some old tights and scraps of material. Seal any gaps in windows, you should be able to find some inexpensive sealer and this will help to save on heating bills.

If there are some rooms you can 'close down' for the winter, shut the doors on them and don't use them again until the weather warms up. Keep to as few rooms as you can manage, then you are not heating more than necessary.

Lag your boiler so that no or little heat escapes from it. Do the same to your pipes. If it gets really cold where you are, this is a good idea anyway as it can stop pipes freezing then bursting, which will cost a fortune to fix.

If you use a fire or other room heater, decide when you are going to bed and turn it off about an hour before. Then you aren't wasting heat on an empty room.

If you have to, try to all sleep in the same room as body heat will help to keep the temperature raised.

Again, if you have to, and don't have double glazing, you could line the windows with clear plastic, it doesn't look great, but it helps to retain heat and it's better than freezing.

Wear lots of layers rather than one big sweater as body heat gets trapped between the layers and keeps you warmer. Keep your feet warm as if they are cold you will feel it more.

Get your family to do some exercises together, this will warm you all up and if you do some silly exercises or games, it'll make you laugh as well.

If things get really bad, you can line bedclothes with paper as this also retains heat.

What products test on animals? Links would be greatly appriciated. or a good list.

If you take the position that all companies test on animals unless they shout about being animal friendly, you'll be off to a good start. Most companies that carry out animal testing prefer the general public not to know about it wherever possible.

There is also the 5 year Rolling Law, where some companies only use ingredients and products that have not been animal tested within the last five years.

I have added a website that should help you further.

my friend just drank from a water bottle that we had sprayed " black flag" which is a spider ant and roach killer...she didnt know we had out it in there....will she get sick???

If she swallowed a pest killer, regardless of how much, she should go straight to the nearest hospital. Some of the ingredients in these pest controls are very nasty.

Don't stop for anything, go now.

i'm 54 and from texas. i moved to nc 3 yrs ago to help my kids with their kids. they both travel a lot for work and i stay with their children.I've had problems with depression and from jan to march of 07, i was homebound. my life was literally falling apart. my son and his wife confronted me about how things were getting bad for me. they offered to help however they could. my daughter in law took my finances and kept those perfectly for me until i was better. i barely remember what went on in that period of time but i did something because we had a great relationship until one day they brought back all my records and told me i did not respect them and they felt like i wasn't trying. it's been 6 months and our relationship is very cold and i miss them so much and would do anything to get back to having a family again.she's an a-type personality and i'm the polar opposite. she is organized to the max, she has a very volitile relationship with her mom, who is a very cold fish. i don't worry about much as i always think things will work out, although i've made great strides in taking action instead of waiting for a problem to work itself out. please help me as this means everything to me. even my son acts stand-offish to me. granny

Well you have been having a tough time. There could be a few reasons for their change of attitude.

Did you get help with your depression? If you didn't, maybe they thought that you weren't trying in that way and decided 'tough love' was what was needed. If you did get help, were you following the advice you were given? If not, again, they may have decided on the tough love to try to get you to help yourself. Sometimes this approach works, sometimes it doesn't. It really does depend on the personality involved and the level of the depression.

You did make a major life change in order to help your family. Could this depression have been building up over the last three years, resulting in the episode earlier this year? Perhaps they are feeling a little guilty about this and don't know how to handle it. Only they would be able to tell you.

It does sound as though your daughter-in-law has had her share of relationship issues and may find it difficult to deal with emotions. If you, at that point where you don't remember much, had an emotional outburst, it could have made them feel unable to cope with your condition. A lot of people find it very difficult to deal with depression, as finding the right thing to say and knowing how to react is very hard.

It's good that you are making such an effort to work out your problems now. Maybe you should write them a letter explaining how you feel and apologising if you did say something out of turn. Tell them that you would like to know what went wrong and that you'd like to build bridges as you miss the relationship you had before.

If they were prepared to do all they did whilst you were ill, there's a good chance that you can all work this out now. Let them know that you do respect them and truly appreciate all they did for you. Hopefully they will then be able to talk to you and start to mend the breach. They may be missing you as well.
