Question Posted Thursday October 25 2007, 10:38 pm
I think I have a cavity again. I have had like 4 or 5. Is that like WAY too many? I brush twice a day, almost every day- like at least 4-5 times a week. But I at least brush once a day everyday. But there is a reason why I have had so many. Ever since I was like 5 or 6, I have had canker sores- like HUGE ones- ALL THE TIME. I almost always had at least one in my mouth that was giant. Nowadays -I am 15 now by the way- I dont get them quite so often, maybe once a month, but when I do get them I get them BAD, and if I get one then it spreads all over my mouth and I have at least 3 or 4 at a time. This is the most painful experiance ever and this all relates back to the cavity thing because when I get these sores, It hurts WAAAAAAAAAY to bad to brush in certain areas. I have tried every OTC drug there is for this and every type of toothpaste. there is one toothpaste and thats how I started to control them, but still I think this is what is causing my cavities. right now I just got a sore spot on my tooth and I looked and there is a little hole there. I HATE going to the dentist because I dont want them to think I am disgusting and have no oral hygeine. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!! is there any prescription drug or something while I am brushing to numb the pain or does anyone know of ANYTHING??? I have had these since I was five and I am so frustrated and hopeless. Thanks if you have any advice. Oh yeah and here is a pic of what one would look like similar to mine.
Your dentist is unlikely to think you are disgusting as you are practising oral hygiene whenever pain allows you. He should understand the issues you have been having and may be able to suggest some ways of managing of this problem.
If you can get it where you are, Bonjela is a local anaesthetic especially for the mouth that should numb the area while you brush.
Are you being too vigorous with your brushing? If you do not have one, try an electric toothbrush as this reduces the chances of injury from excessive brushing.
Another thing to bear in mind with mouth ulcers is that they can sometimes be a sign of a health problem and if you have one, you can find they can then spread to other areas of your mouth. Whether this is due to a vitamin or iron deficiency or a condition like Coeliacs Disease, you need to get yourself checked out by a doctor to make sure.
If you can rule out any health problems, you can then look at management and your dentist, again, should be able to help with this. Dentists are more than patch them up or pull them out people these days. They have a great knowledge of all things to do with the mouth, not just the teeth.
You don't need to suffer like this any more, there is help out there for you. Take your courage in both hands and go and see your dentist. [ isis's advice column | Ask isis A Question ]
