about

I've been away for a while due to a serious illness and subsequent health issues.

Favourite quotes of the moment:

The children of Israel wandered the desert for 40 years - Even in biblical times men wouldn't ask for directions!

Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. whatever we do to the thread, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect. - Chief Seattle.

We spend the first 12 months of a child's life teaching them to walk and talk. We spend the next 12 years telling them to sit down and shut up!

As you slide down the bannisters of life, may the splinters never be pointing the wrong way.

May you be in Heaven half an hour before the devil knows you're dead.

I've been very happily married since August 1980 to a wonderful man and have beautiful twin girls, now aged 31. Both are married to wonderful young men and one of our girls has recently made us grandparents to a beautiful, smart and feisty granddaughter. I studied geology with the Open University. I am retired from being a manager in a large UK based insurance company which I actually quite enjoyed. (How sad is that?). I love anything to do with the environment and wildlife and try to do my bit for preservation and conservation. I would like there to be a decent world for our grandchildren to inherit. I also have CFS so find life a bit of a challenge at times but always hope for better health in the future.

I have a deep interest in the spiritual and the paranormal worlds, having experienced several incidents myself, and have been involved in meditation groups and groups that (safely) explore the paranormal. There is more to this life than we would normally credit, so an open mind is always the best option. You're not so likely to get caught by surprise!

I have a deep fascination for anything to do with Ancient Egypt, as you can probably tell by my name. I have statues and paintings all around the house. As my hubby has a similar interest in Native Americans, we tend to have a lot of unusual wall decorations, like a tomahawk.

I love cars, especially vintage ones, but my all time favourite has to be the Bugatti Chiron, what a car!

I have had a lot to do with animals over the years. I have fostered many, helped to set up a wildlife charitable hospital and raised a diverse range of young animals from bats to fox cubs and different species of birds, even a baby deer! I have had great pleasure in sharing my life and home with a number of animals over the years, most of them rescues. I am currently sponsoring an Amur Tiger, they are such beautiful cats and desperately need help, there are so few of them left. I was lucky enough a couple of years ago to meet some Aye-Aye's and Livingstone's Bats, a truly wonderful experience. We now have three cats, Oliver and Mollie, a brother and sister, he's a ginger and she's a tortoiseshell and a black and white called Daisy. She arrived in a taxi and was left on our doorstep in a cat carrier with the message that 'they knew we loved cats and would be good to her'. She has settled down well and gets on wonderfully with the other two.

If you have a pet that is showing ANY signs of illness or distress, please, please, please take it to a vet! Even if finance is an issue, work that out later. It is cruel to leave an animal suffering for any reason. Most animals do not show signs of illness until they have been ill for some time, basic instinct tells them it is a display of vulnerability, and certain death in the wild. Their instincts have not caught up with domesticity.

I do feel that we should all treat others as we would wish to be treated. Bad karma comes back to haunt us.

advice

Is there an age that women reach and they'll stop getting their period?

The menopause kicks in usually 40's to 50's. If it starts before 45 it is called early menopause, before the age of 40 it is premature menopause. In around 1% of cases it could start earlier, from 15 to the 30's. Sometimes it will start if there has been a medical problem resulting in surgery to remove the ovaries or premature ovarian failure, when the ovaries stop producing eggs, however, this is rare. Surgery will start the menopause straight away but medication is usually given to decrease some of the symptoms, hot sweats, mood swings etc.
There are quite a few other reasons for early menopause but all of these are also quite rare.
Hope that helps.

All MY friends think i should ask this guy at my school out! He IS REALLY HOTT BUT I DONT KNOW IF HE WOULD SAY YESS?ALSO ISN'T A WIERD FOR A GIRL TTO ASK A GUY OUT??

sIGNED

HELP

No, it's not weird these days to ask a guy on a date. If you're shy and don't think you could take it if he says no, try to arrange an outing with a group of friends and ask him to join you. Then, if he's shy as well, or un-nerved by being asked out, it will be less pressure on both of you. If it goes well and he seems to enjoy your company, the next time you could suggest the two of you go somewhere like the movies, again, no pressure.
If he says no, he's obviously not the right guy for you and there will be someone better waiting for you somewhere.
Remember, just because he is hot, it doesn't mean that his character is or that he is best suited to what you like to do.
Hope that helps and good luck.

i have tried reading the directions on how to insert a tampon, but im still not sure where to insert it....
like where in ur vagina?
im too scared that ill put it in wrong, please help

14/f

If you put one foot on the toilet seat, it gives you a better angle. You can feel for the right place and just push it in gently, if you meet resistance, stop and try a slightly different angle. It should be so comfortable when you've done it correctly, you should not be able to feel it there. It's hard to put it in the wrong place as there is little alternative. It is difficult the first time, but after a bit of practice you'll be fine.
Good luck.

I was wondering if theres something wrong with me right now.
- For the last two weeks, I've been very agitated, little things push me over the edge and everythings been bothering me. Usually I'm a happy person, and easy going but latley small things like having to repeat myself, running outa something like shampoo, people tapping there pencils, people singing to songs randomly, certain words+songs, and even people who talk to me, I get very angry with them, and just like they bother me, its like, why won't they just stop.

I'm not depressed or anything, its just thats small things are agrivating me alot more then usual in the past few weeks and my friends and family have noticed it too, is something wrong!?

You don't say how old you are, but the symptoms you describe could easily be due to stress. When we feel that we haven't got a proper grip on life, little things that never bothered us before can suddenly become massive problems and cause us to react with anger. Triggers could be exams, family, friends, boyfriend problems etc.
If it definitely is not stress, it could be hormones. When they kick in, everything seems to go haywire for a while and tempers go out of the window, along with anything else within reach. They settle down in time but it takes a while to adjust.
If none of the above apply, perhaps a trip to the doctors would be a good idea? Then your mind could be put at rest on the reason for the change.
Good luck.

Were there movie critics in the 1930s?
And who were some famous people in the 1930s?
Thanks so much for the help!

Firstly, Howard Hughes was a famous aviator, hence the film, he was also a film producer and in later years he became a hypochondriac to the extent that he was a total clean freak. Pre Bill Gates he was also the richest man in the world. He was never an actor.
Movie critics have been around since the days of the silent movies which were overtaken by 'talkies' towards the end of the 1920's.
Some famous stars of the 1930's included Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, Charlie Chaplin, (one of the few who managed the transfer to talkies), Clark Gable, Myrna Loy, Shirley Temple, Mae West, Laurel and Hardy, The Marx Brothers, William Powell, W.C. Fields, Errol Flynn, Greta Garbo, (I want to be alone), George Burns and Gracie Allen, Judy Garland, Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Mickey Rooney, Cary Grant, James Stewart, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Al Jolson, Glenn Miller, Count Basey, Cole Porter, Johnny Weissmuller (Tarzan) to name just a few.
Hope this helps.

what's the da vinci code? everyone was talking about it, and now theres a movie. what is it?
thanks xo

It's the sequel to the book Angels and Demons. Robert Langdon returns as the hero of the book and is a Harvard Symbologist, he finds the murdered body of a curator in the Louvre near a cipher that no one understands. He finds it is one of a trail of clues left by Da Vinci, visible to all but understood by few, leading to the Holy Grail. He then joins with a French Cryptologist, discovers that the curator was involved in a secret sect whose lives have been dedicated to protecting the sacred relic.
He then becomes involved in a race to protect it from another secret sect that wants to take it.
It is a fast paced mix of intrigue and adventure. Worth reading the book and watching the film.
Hope that helps.

I'm taking my dog to get put down on Friday. She has cancer and is really sick. I've had her for 10 years and it's going to be really devastating. I don't know how I'm going to handle it. Has anyone else had a pet put down, how did you get over it? What's it going to feel like, no one close to me has ever died before!

I'm so sorry to hear about this, it's a really awful thing to happen. I've lost 12 pets over the last 25 years due to old age or terminal illness and it never gets any easier. I can only suggest, as mentioned below, you take plenty of pictures, and maybe a sample of her hair and spend as much time with her now as possible. It's going to be hard, and you can't really do anything to prepare for it.
Try to take comfort in the fact that you love each other, have been together for a long time and you are doing the one last thing for her that you can do, put her out of her pain.
Hard as it is, I take a kind of comfort in being with them while they slip out of this world so that I am the last person they see and know they are loved, but I do realise that not everyone would be able to do this. It's a personal choice and you would not be wrong to not want to do this.
As for getting over it, I'm not sure you ever really do 'get over' losing a loved one but in time you do come to terms with it. It's a sad fact that animals do not live as long as us, but the joy of having them around more than compensates for the sheer pain of losing them.
As long as you know you have done all you can for her, your last gift to her is to let her go in love.
As you seem to have such a large capacity for love, in time, and it's up to you how long, there will be another animal that would benefit from that love. Don't let it put you off having another animal, there are so many needing good homes and you sound as though you've done a fine job. Courage and good luck to you.

Is there such a thing as a battery powered straightener? I ask because it is normally hot in my first class at school and when its hot..of course..i sweat..and my hair goes balistic on me..especially after the first time i straighten it. So i was wondering if there is such a thing or if there is like a mini straightener or something...if not then does anyone know of anything that will help me? thanks

I don't know which country you're in but if you google 'battery powered hair straighteners' you get a fair choice. If you also add 'mini' or 'compact' you will get a good choice of these too, lots of which are also battery powered. Prices range widely and P&P is usually on top. Some of the websites grade their efficiency so you get a better idea of what you are buying. Good luck.

My girlfriend just broke up with me and we both loved each other, she said i was being too jealous, but i was really just in a bad mood. now i dont know what to do and i was wondering if you had any advice for me?

Have you ever acted this way before? Is she basing her judgement on the one incident?
If you have been jealous in the past, regardless of your mood at the time, you could find you have some insecurity issues that you need to resolve. It's easy enough to get help for this, your doctor would be able to recommend a good therapist in this field. You would then be able to tell her you are sorry, and you are looking for help. Ask her if she would give you another chance and see how it goes? You could also tell her you would appreciate her support at this time as she means so much to you.
If, however, this really was a once off, it may just be that, sadly, she wanted out of the relationship and was looking for an excuse. If this is the reason, I'm afraid that there are some people that cannot find the courage to end a relationship truthfully, they need an excuse, which in this case would be your jealousy. Only you will have the answers to these questions. I can only suggest that whatever the answer is, there is someone for everyone and maybe she isn't the right girl for you. There is going to be one far better suited to you, you just haven't found her yet.
All the relationships we go through teach us things, which we then can carry onto the next one. Hopefully, in the main, they will be positive lessons which will enrich the permanent relationship waiting for us.
I hope I have helped and good luck.

Why does my vagina smell like a fishy substance

i've heard people talk about how vaginas smell but i dont think anyone elses does?.. i hope this isnt gross! i'll rate 5's!

It sounds as though you may have something called
bacterial vaginosis. This is a bacterial infection and no one knows for sure how women get it. Other signs that could point to this are a discharge, white, grey or yellowish in colour, itching or burning, slight redness or swelling in the area and a fishy smell that seems worse after sex or washing with soap and water.
It is easily treated with antibiotics so make an appointment to see your doctor as soon as you can. Good luck.

ok, how come whenever someone says a curse word, they say excuse my french/pardon my french etc...? i never understood it...I always hear my mom say it after she says a curse word. Can someone explain it to me? Thanks. i rate high for real answers. ♥

Just one of the possible reasons:

This phrase, in which French refers to "bad language", is employed
when the speaker feels compelled to use an obscenity despite having
listeners who might be offended. It's a late 19th century euphemism
which first appeared in Harper's Magazine in 1895.
It is thought that the term French is employed in this sense as it
already had a history of association with things considered vulgar.
As far back as the early 16th century, French pox and the French
disease were synonyms for genital herpes, and French-sick was another
term for syphillis. The OED [Oxford English Dictionary] also equates
the adjective French with "spiciness", as in French letter for
"condom", French kiss (1923) and French (i. e. "sexually explicit")
novels (from 1749).

Most of the other explanations I've found also all refer to the French as being 'dirty' or sexually liberated and vulgar.
As the French and English have had a difficult relationship throughout history, the phrase is rather biased and not exactly PC these days.
Hope this helps.

my dog is scratching his skin like raw...I dont know why. It's gotten so bad that by his eye, he actually bleeds sometimes. Im really scared for him and it bothers me to see him with blood. I wipe it off, but I hate looking at the bloody tissue. He gets scabs now in that area. Why does he do this? COuld his nails be too long? Is there anything I can do to stop it?

It could be Miliary Eczema which is a flea allergy, if he doesn't have fleas it could be a food allergy. Flea allergies can be kept at bay by using flea treatments and flea spraying your living areas.
The most common food allergy in dogs is to beef by products. This is found in nearly every dry and wet food and in most dog treats.
You should take him to the vet to get him tested and to make sure none of the wounds become infected. The vet would also be able to recommend an anti allergen food if this is the problem. I don't know which country you are in but if you can get it, Wafcol Salmon and Potato is very good for allergic dogs. It comes in small or large dog size.
Whatever the reason for the problem though, you should take him to the vet. He can't be very comfortable with skin like that, and the sooner it's treated the easier it will be for him to recover. Good luck.

Uhm, okey..don't get grossed out or anything. But I need help. I'm a female, and most females are expected to shave everything and have no hair. Well, I have hair. Lot's of it. I shave my legs and armpits, and mustach, and everything ofcourse..but lately I've noticed I have hair on my back and stomach and chest, and it grosses me out. And I can't wear the clothes I want to wear, and I can't stop crying about how insecure it makes me feel. So what do I do? I can't shave for obcious reasons, and if i tweeze or use an "epilator" I'll get ingrowns (or whatever they're called) right? Maybe you can get rid of ingrowns or something? Just help me please because I honestly FEAR summer-season now :'(

thank you.

There are 2 types of hair on the body, vellus hairs which are short, fine and colorless and terminal hairs which are long, coarse, colored and, in certain areas of the body, responsive to hormonal influence (androgens).
The adrenal gland and the ovaries normally make androgens, (male hormones). In normal amounts, androgens cause acne and the appearance of terminal hair on the extremities, armpits and pubic area at the time of puberty.
In women with excessive hair growth, the hair follicles are sensitive to androgens which may cause hairs to change from vellus to terminal hairs. Once a vellus hair becomes a terminal hair, it usually does not change back. If a woman’s androgen level is very high, she may experience male pattern balding, decreased breast size, and a deepening of her voice.
Both hirsutism and virulism are caused by excess androgen secretion or increased sensitivity of the hair follicle to normal levels of androgens. Additionally, some medications that have similar characteristics as androgens may cause excessive hair growth.
Common causes of this can be ethnic origin, PCOS, (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome), Tumours, late onset Hyperplasia or Cushing Syndrome.
A doctor will be able to test you to see what the cause is and arrange any treatment that may be necessary. The hair distribution you describe does seem to indicate Hirsutism, from medication to cosmetic therapy. The sooner you act the more that can be done about it. So make an appointment as soon as you can and good luck.

whats a secret shopper?

A secret shopper is paid by a store or group of stores. They are given dates and times to choose from to visit the store, then they go and buy something, ask for assistance, and generally check out the way the store treats its customers and the way they respond to queries. The assistants have no idea who they are so an unbiased view can be taken. The secret shopper then fills in a report and gets a nominal fee. I do this for a group of stores local to me, if you are interested go to a store in your area's website and see if they are asking for people to fill this position. Good luck.

My sister hopes to get married in august and i've been nominated as master of ceremonies. I have accepted. However, i've never been an mc before so i want to be good and not be an embarrasment that night. Can someone help me on this. What does a master of ceremonies all do? what are some good ways to keep the audience entertained? Any help in aiding me to prepare myself for this will be much appreciated. THX

Here are some websites with lists of duties for Master of Ceremonies. There is a lot to do and you will need to be well organised.
It sounds as though you are very well thought of to be asked to undetake this.
The last website has a personal e mail address if you would like to ask any other questions from a professional toastmaster.
Best of luck, I'm sure you will be brilliant.

I think I have depression, and I want to see a counsellor. I walked passed the room today but i couldn't go in, i just felt like i would be wasting their time and that I don't really need any counselling.

I have been feeling like thi for about 3 years, i used to self harm about 2 years ago but i got that under control - i still want to when i get wound up.

I often think about what it would be like when I'm dead, I wonder who would miss me, who wouldn't miss me.
A few months ago, I was going to commit suicide, i started to write a letter to my mum, but I couldn't finish it, I jut burst into tears.

I need someone to talk to. But I can't bring myself to walk into that room.
How can I overcome this?? Why can't i bring myself to walk into the room?

Please help me. x

You don't say how old you are but if you are still at school, do you have a favourite teacher you could talk to or a friend that could go with you? Can you talk to your mum, give her a chance to help you?
When people get this depressed, it feels like there is no one who will care enough about them to miss them but they would be surprised at how many would.
You sound as though you are a sensitive and caring person and the world needs people like you so much.
To walk in that room means you have to confront all the fears that you are holding inside and admitting you need help and that is so hard to do. You have been so brave up to this point by not giving into this, so I know you can do it. The hardest thing will be that first visit, after that it will get easier. You will start to realise people do care and want to help.
Counselling is not a waste of time, with the right person to talk to, you start to understand why you think the way you do and ways to change this pattern.
Go for it and in a year or so, (it can take a while to work through things, but don't give up), you'll feel a different person and able to start fulfilling your potential. I think you will have a lot to offer so go and walk in that room and ask for the help you want. If you want to keep me updated I'd be happy to hear from you. Good luck.

my hair is so unhealthy. there is so much breakage and frizz. what can i do to get rid of it and make it look healthy and moisturized?

thanks..ILL RATE HIGH ;)

You need a good protein conditioner and a moisturising shampoo. Then if you straighten or blow dry your hair you should use a serum to protect it from the heat. When you have the time you could use a hot oil treatment or wash and towel dry your hair, massage in the protein conditioner, comb gently through, wrap cling film round your head then a warm towel, leave it for 15 minutes then wash as normal.
Don't ever drag a comb or brush through your hair as this will cause it to split more. If your hair knots, work on it from the bottom to the top.
If you still need to get rid of the frizz after all this, you could try John Freida Frizzease, the range is designed for frizzy hair and works extremely well if you follow the instructions carefully. He also does a protein conditioner. Avoid extremes of weather touching your hair where possible as this will have a drying effect. You should end up with lustrous, shiny hair. Good luck.
