Hey, I'm Mara. I love dancing. It's practically my favourite thing to do. I love House, R&B, pretty much everything with a good beat, and Benny Benassi is my hero; that's why my column is a shrine to him. I graduated this year and am now in my first year of college where I'm trying to pick a major. Chances are you'll see some of my Psychology questions floating around somewhere here. I'm also extremely interested in Political Science too because I, like half the people living in Canada, somehow want to change the world. I particularly want to find a cure for poverty, corruption, cancer, AIDS and George Bush because honestly, I think those are the biggest problems we have right now. I have decided that maybe I should take the time to live a little before I start though because I have a good fifty years ahead of me to fix all the issues there are. Currently my life consists of: studying, working, socializing, eating and ocassionaly sleeping. I spent practically all of my high school life being a delinquent and partying to huge extents until I discovered my brain sometime in the middle of my senior year. I still like to have a good time every once in a while but you always need to find that balance (I haven't exactly found it yet but I'm getting close). Unfortunatley, a habit that has stuck with me from school is my obsessive gossiping. I just can't stop and you know, an article in Cosmo says that gossipers are healthier people because they bond over it? Who would have thought? Anyway, I do have my limitations and I don't condone nasty, brutal gossiping and I don't gossip about anything my friends have told me in confidence or something about someone else that they have slipped to me, however, if I find you in a washroom at a random party making out with my bestfriends's boyfriend, a few people are probably going to hear about it. Actually, more than a few people will hear about it because one of my absolute pet peeves is parties where the all the bathrooms are occupied due to sexual activity or... puking activity. Sooooo what else is there to know about me? My favourite thing in the world is shopping and my worst fear is existantialism. I am OCDey in a clinical way so you can ask me questions about that. You can ask me practically anything you want except for dumb questions but I'm not going to answer them in my little column here because it's a huge waste of space when I could be writing about myself (Click 'LookIt' on my menubar for answers to dumb questions so you don't have to embarass yourself asking them and getting bitched out from me). What I can do, is offer you three pieces of truly inspirational advice. Firstly, never live your life by what others want of you, cherish yourself and everyone around you, and never beat yourself down about anything you couldn't have avoided. Secondly, donate at least ten percent of the income you earn in your life to someone who needs it. Lastly, never get into a bulldozer when you're under the influence and start driving it towards a poor freshmen (I am never going to another kegger ever again... ever). Ok, I'll shut up now. You can start asking me stuff, if you haven't hit the back button already.

Ok I kinda have a strange question, but I'm going to ask anyway. If you did butt excercises every day, would that make your butt get any bigger? Like, would it build up the muscles in your butt, so that it would appear bigger? And if that's true, what kind of excercises could I do to do that? Thank you soooo much!
Doing butt exercises will firm your butt but if you're looking for a nice bubble butt or a jiggly butt, you won't get it there.
If you have a little bit of flab in your butt and do excercises, you might end up making it smaller.
If you want to exercise anyway, the best way is to climb stairs. Start going up and down your stairwell or find a tall building with an elevators and get on it.

i want to know how to make my bottom eyelashes look pretty.. like when i put mascara on but usually it doesnt look right and it gets all globby and stuff.. any tips?? i rate high
You need a new mascara. Anything that goes on your eyes need to be replaced once every 4-6 weeks.
You also need to do steady strokes when you apply and don't put on more than two coats.
Make sure your mascara wand has longer bristles for sheer, natural looking lashes.
I recommend Maybelline New York Great Lash Mascara. It works great for me and it's curved brush fits the shape of your eye.
Try lining your inner eye with white eyeliner if your eyes are small, or black if you have big eyes. It makes your eyes and your lashes POP.

I have had braces for the past three years and I -never- have asked for a colour. I always go with silver.
Don't try using clear ones because they stain easily and look yellow.

hey there!
im a girl scout and im at the point where i have to start thinking of ideas for my gold award. for those of you who dont know what the gold award is .. its a project that takes 65 hrs to complete(including planing, and actually doing it). it needs to benefit the community in some way. does anyone have anyideas what i could do?
p.s. the people participating are going to need some kind of motivation to do this.
Well, you could always do basic fundraising ideas. Donate the proceeds to a local charity:
- Hold a clothing drive or a food drive.
- Hold a walkathon.
- Hold a concert and have some local bands play.
- Hold any kind of event.
Usually you can talk to your city's Recreational services and they can loan you a park for a day if it's for a charitable service. You can ask local shops to donate prizes so you can have a lottery during your event too.
Another idea is to hold a Senior's Day where you have various activities that Seniors can do. It's a good way to involve the youth and get them to connect with an older generation because Seniors these days are pretty afraid of "young people".
You could also do something like a Clean-Up-A-Creek Project. Band together and pick a littered part of your city/town and clean it up. It doesn't have to be a stream or a park. You could chose a soup kitchen and try to repaint it and do some minor repairs.

hey i'm a guy and have a girlfriend, i love her and everything. i was wondering...i havn't asked her yet, but would it be a bad thing if i sent valentines day cards to my friends that are girls? some of them i'm really good friends with and i wouldn't want to do it if it offended my girlfriend or let her think the wrong idea. should i just ask her about it, or am i over-analyzing things? i am getting my girlfriend a gift, but would it be wrong to send a few cards to my friends as well? what do you think, thanks in advance.
Of course it's for friends too. You have to remember that Valentine's day wasn't meant to be a couple's day. The couple-y part is just commercial.
My best friend's boyfriend gave us all flowers for Valentine's day. Of fourse, he got his girlfriend a present but he acknowledged us too.
I dont think you have to explain anything to your girlfriend. She'll probably understand. If she doesn't, just explain to her that you want to show -all- your friends some appreciation.
It's nice that you're thinking of other girls. I've been single on Valentine's day too and I know how good it feels when someone random just decides to share the love :)

so i got my boyfriend some gifties for vday. but i wanna know what are some cute things i can do for him during the school day (between periods).
i'm thinking maybe putting a sticky note in his locker for every period. but idk. i'm a lame idea maker.
Well, it all depends on what kind of guy he is but if you want an idea, this is what I did last year with my boyfriend:
After he parked his car, I left him a white rose on his windshield that symbolized "loyalty" and "innocence".
I left a yellow rose in his binder that symbolized "friendship".
I put a pink rose in his locker that symbolized "happiness".
And during study hall, I gave him a red rose that symbolized my love.
I'm not sure he understood the exact meaning of them but I'm sure he knew they meant -something-. Plus, if you're doing this you might want to plan it better because he didn't find the white rose till the end of the day lol.

Usually they're in denial and don't realize that they're depressed.
Or they don't have anyone to reach out to, which could be part of the depression.
If you know anyone who is depressed, you should probably try to help them out even if you don't know them that well.
From first hand experience, it's always better to go through something like that and know that someone out there cares anyway.

I am currently in grade 9 and next year we get a choice of one or two math classes out of 3. Since I was very good at math I am thinking of taking IB Precalc and Applied. What I hate though is that we only get to choose 2 classes and there is also consumer math on the list. I will not take it because its basic but its basic stuff I need to know! Anyways does anyone know a website that contains all the information on grade 10 consumer math? I really want to take the other 2 classes but I also want to know about consumer math.
We have consumer math here, it's called Applications of Math 10.
Honey, don't bother taking this course.
Applications/Consumer math is for people who have no sense of math (fractions, graphs et cetera) and just need to be taught basic mathematics (and be able to graduate).
We call it "stupid" math here. It's just an excuse for a person (such as me) who isn't any good at math, to get a graduating Math 10 credit. Since you're good at Math, stick to the advanced placement Mathematics.
The stuff they teach us in Applications is dummy math. Taxes and balancing a checkbook are simple arithmetics and any idiot could figure it out. The teachers are just easy going and let you do whatever they want. I spent half of the course playing poker.

I am looking for a religion but I want one thats right for me. Can someone tell me every religion out there and what its about? Also for religions that require you to go to church is it possible to just stay home and do what you would at a church and still have it not be a sin?
Converting one's religion is a very important life decision and needs to be taken seriously. You can't run around changing your religion every week.
A religion also needs to be more about belief than convenience. If you convert to Taoism, for example, you need to -believe- that there are many gods. Don't try to convince yourself of anything or else you aren't being true to yourself.
You don't always need a religion. Many friends of mine don't have a religion. They're not anarchists or satanists, they just don't care about religion and just want to dismiss it all. That's their own choice.
Before you make the switch, I recommend that you make an informed decision by researching the religion of your choosing thoroughly.
Stay away from cult websites or any other religion that asks you for money or your soul :s

every now and then, I get these truly awful headaches that dont go away for a few days. Theyre really annoying becuase they interrupt my whole life...I cant do anything becuase even the slightest noise makes my head pound and bright lights make my eyes sting. Could it have anything to do with the computer? and is there anything I could do (besides aspirin or any medication) to make them stop happening or make them less intense? thanks so much ♥
Sounds like a case of Migraines, honey. Don't take my word for it though, go see your doctor.

No, that's not exactly true.
However, you might find that the menstrual cycles of close female friends, and women you live with will probably match yours.
My best friend, my mother, my sister and I all get our periods around the same time and I have heard of many other instances of this happening.

No, it is not possible to grow black roses. Many scientists are trying to cross-breed them to find the 'black' rose though because there is such a demand for them.
For the meantime, you can try a dark purple rose. Those are always hanging around in flower shops sometimes.

Chances are that the boys are intimidated by you. You're blonde, skinny, tall and popular, why would a girl like you ever be interested in a guy like them?
That's why you have to put yourself out there and go after them. If you think you see a guy you like, you need to be the one who makes the first move because he'll probably be too scared to ever come around to it.
This is also why you need to be wary of guys who approach -you-. They're probably cocky arses who think a lot of themselves... i.e. jerks. And you know you want to stay away from that.
I know it sucks to always have to go get the guy but it's the price of beauty ;)

Since I'm a level II mod, I was able to see your username and respond to your feedback.
The reason why I thought you might want to keep them on for a few more months is because I generally trust my doctors, and it seems like a better idea to try and get as much work done as possible before you take the braces off forever.
I did say in my answer "Or whatever month you want them off by," so if you wanted to get them off ASAP, I wasn't going to tell you not to. I didn't think it was that urgent though, because in your last year in high school, you won't be known as "the girl with the braces," if that's what you're fearing.
But once again, if you want them off immediately, then just tell your doctor. You might want to ask him, realistically, how much he can get done in a month. If his answer isn't impressive, then you can just have him take them off right there and then.
I won't lie to you, having the braces taken off was a damn good feeling, which lasted for at least a week and a half. It's like... "holy crap, I can feel my teeth with my tongue!"

Honestly, I don't like the guy and the work -isn't- being done. Even if I switch doctors, I still probably won't have it done by May.
I know people at my school don't really notice I have braces but I do and I think I'll feel a lot better with my braces off. I'm sick of not smiling because everytime I start, I remember my braces and stop.
I want them off now especially since the chances of him fixing these little spaces by Grad is nil.
Yeah, I know getting them off is probably a good feeling but if I take them off and there's still a problem, I'll be more like, "Yay I can feel my teeth... and several gaps that should have been fixed two years ago"

I was getting into my car today and my friend was doing something weird in my yard so I turned to look at him while opening my car door and hit myself right in the face with it. Right on my cheek bone. It hurts like crazy but what's worse it that now it's swollen and purple. Tomorrow I have an awards night to go to and my powder isn't doing much to help. I need things I can use to cover it up with good. I'm icing it hoping to at least get rid of the swelling. I can go out and buy stuff tomorrow but I really need it to work! Price isn't an issue.
Stick a spoon in the freezer and buy some aloe vera (this reduces the swelling). Cover the spoon with aloe vera and rub it across your cheek. It works like a charm whenever I get a hickey. I always keep a spoon in my freezer just in case.
Other than that, get some cover up pronto. Use a nice brand (ask the sales lady to help you). If it's a -huge- bruise, it might turn yellow and start oozing. Typically there bruises will last from five days to two weeks.

In your opinion (meaning that if you tell me what you think you'll get a 5), do you think that people should miss out on church in order to do yardwork, study for an exam, play in a soccer tournament, etc? I just want to know what qualifies as an acceptable excuse for not going to church. What other good reasons are there for missing church? -no I'm not trying to avoid going to church-

I think it varies depending on your religion and the type of people who go. Technically (in the eyes of God), Sunday is the day of rest so there is NO EXCUSE for opting to do work instead of go to Church but I know my friend, who is an Anglican, misses it sometimes and doesn't think it's a big deal, while my boyfriend, who is a Catholic, would rather get run over by a bus than miss Church.
If you're doing it for appearances, the people who go to your Church will be the deciding force on the matter. Do they go to Church all the time, are they strict, et cetera?

My friend has being going out with her boyfriend for two years now - she's just turned 16 and he's just turned 18. They've always got on really well, and he's always been a really good boyfriend, but lately he's been pressuring her for sex.
She's really not comfortable with this and is happy to carry on as before, but he's been saying how selfish she is.
He also spoke to one of his girl mates about it (someone my friend doesn't even KNOW), and this girls said very nasty things about her.
How can I help my friend? What should she do?
Ok well first of all, I know that in mags and on TVs they tell you that boys should NOT pressure you for sex and any guy who does this is a jerk, but let's not antagonize guys this quickly, ok?
So this boy started going out with her when he was 16. He has been good and faithful to her for two years and he is a boy. He is a boy who hasn't gotten any for two years. Don't you think he has at least a little bit of a right to want it? Not that your friend should give in, but you can't blame him so much. Chances are that all his friends are sexually active already and he's still waiting for his girlfriend to come around.
So your friend doesn't want to have sex? Well, that's fine. She shouldn't if she doesn't want to but she's at that age now where she's more mature and needs to start being an adult about things. She needs to make it clear to the guy that she's not going to have sex yet and ask him to wait for her if he can. If he can't, she needs to let him go without any misgivings. I know it seems harsh but there are really just three options in this scenario. A. Ask the boyfriend to wait and hope he does. B. Put out for him even though she doesn't want to. C. Break up with him so he can satisfy himself elsewhere. It's a difficult decision and it was wrong of the boy to call her selfish, but in the end, you know it would come down to this.
As for the girl, tell the boyfriend he shouldn't have revealed his personal life to anyone else. Other than that, ignore her. She's probably a jealous bitch with no life. She isn't worth a though.
