about

I've been away for a while due to a serious illness and subsequent health issues.

Favourite quotes of the moment:

The children of Israel wandered the desert for 40 years - Even in biblical times men wouldn't ask for directions!

Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. whatever we do to the thread, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect. - Chief Seattle.

We spend the first 12 months of a child's life teaching them to walk and talk. We spend the next 12 years telling them to sit down and shut up!

As you slide down the bannisters of life, may the splinters never be pointing the wrong way.

May you be in Heaven half an hour before the devil knows you're dead.

I've been very happily married since August 1980 to a wonderful man and have beautiful twin girls, now aged 31. Both are married to wonderful young men and one of our girls has recently made us grandparents to a beautiful, smart and feisty granddaughter. I studied geology with the Open University. I am retired from being a manager in a large UK based insurance company which I actually quite enjoyed. (How sad is that?). I love anything to do with the environment and wildlife and try to do my bit for preservation and conservation. I would like there to be a decent world for our grandchildren to inherit. I also have CFS so find life a bit of a challenge at times but always hope for better health in the future.

I have a deep interest in the spiritual and the paranormal worlds, having experienced several incidents myself, and have been involved in meditation groups and groups that (safely) explore the paranormal. There is more to this life than we would normally credit, so an open mind is always the best option. You're not so likely to get caught by surprise!

I have a deep fascination for anything to do with Ancient Egypt, as you can probably tell by my name. I have statues and paintings all around the house. As my hubby has a similar interest in Native Americans, we tend to have a lot of unusual wall decorations, like a tomahawk.

I love cars, especially vintage ones, but my all time favourite has to be the Bugatti Chiron, what a car!

I have had a lot to do with animals over the years. I have fostered many, helped to set up a wildlife charitable hospital and raised a diverse range of young animals from bats to fox cubs and different species of birds, even a baby deer! I have had great pleasure in sharing my life and home with a number of animals over the years, most of them rescues. I am currently sponsoring an Amur Tiger, they are such beautiful cats and desperately need help, there are so few of them left. I was lucky enough a couple of years ago to meet some Aye-Aye's and Livingstone's Bats, a truly wonderful experience. We now have three cats, Oliver and Mollie, a brother and sister, he's a ginger and she's a tortoiseshell and a black and white called Daisy. She arrived in a taxi and was left on our doorstep in a cat carrier with the message that 'they knew we loved cats and would be good to her'. She has settled down well and gets on wonderfully with the other two.

If you have a pet that is showing ANY signs of illness or distress, please, please, please take it to a vet! Even if finance is an issue, work that out later. It is cruel to leave an animal suffering for any reason. Most animals do not show signs of illness until they have been ill for some time, basic instinct tells them it is a display of vulnerability, and certain death in the wild. Their instincts have not caught up with domesticity.

I do feel that we should all treat others as we would wish to be treated. Bad karma comes back to haunt us.

advice

I'm trying to write a paper in spanish on Microsoft Word, however those little green and red lines are driving me crazy! How do I turn them off?

This is the advice given in microsoft word help:

Turn on or off automatic spelling and grammar checking.

Some of the content in this topic may not be applicable to some languages.

On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Spelling and Grammar tab.

Do one or both of the following:
To turn on or off automatic spelling checking, select or clear the Check Spellng as you type check box.

To turn on or off automatic grammar checking, select or clear the Check Grammar as you type check box.

However, as it does say that it may not be applicable to some languages, I guess the only way to find out if Spanish is one of them is to try it.

Hope that helps and good luck.

Is it normal for girls to have hair on their back and front like men? My sister's only 11 and she has hair everywhere but when I see girls at the beach they don't have hair (And I looked really close at the blonds because their hair is see through). My friend doesn't think so but just to be sure.

If she really is excessively hairy she could have something called Hirsutism. There are a few causes of this so I have included some websites to give you more information.
It can be dealt with in a number of ways depending on the severity. She would need to see a doctor to have this confirmed.
If she fits the descriptions you will need to talk to your mother about this so that a visit can be arranged. If however, she does not fit this pattern, it may just be how her body is going to be. But as I said, only a doctor will be able to tell for sure.

I have always wondered this, when a dog looks in a mirror can they see their reflection? My dogs never react and just look like they are staring at a wall.

Thanks ! :)

Dogs have monochrome (black and white) vision and their eyesight is not as good as a cats. Their heritage in hunting is to rely more on scent to track and catch their prey. Therefore, it will not be so bothered about a mirror image of itself, as there is no scent to suggest it may be of interest. A puppy may get excited initially but it will soon become bored and then ignore the mirror. However, there are always exceptions! :)

I have a male dachshund 3 yrs old (yes the the that pees in the house ) I just had my female fixed 8 days ago. And My puppy(her son) nine month old Piebald, got ran over yesterday ( still crying)I need to know if i can breed the dad with his daughter? As i have 2 of his daughters in the area. And life isnt the same without a puppy ! And hoping for another Piebald.
Thank you N Wade

I'm so sorry to hear about your puppy, that's really awful. I totally understand why you want to consider breeding in this way but there are a few things you need to take into consideration.

A small genepool is at risk from many problems.
It can limit the puppies abilities to produce some types of antibodies, making them more susceptible to some illnesses. When they are closely related, any genetic problems are more likey to show.

Some of them have lower birth weights and/or puppies with less energy, slower or stunted growth, more still births and abnormal puppies, higher losses due to illness and birth defects. There is also the chance of temperment problems etc.

Having said that, a great many breeders, in an attempt to 'improve' a breed will use inbreeding to some extent, but they generally ensure that the dogs involved are free from any hereditary problems and they don't go beyond one or two generations.

Hope that helps and you feel a lot better soon.

Okay,
so i have super thin hair, it's hard to do things with it, like even in a ponytail because then it looks stupid. Any tips on how to make hair thicker?

A good quality volumising moose sprayed into the roots can help with this problem. I have included a couple of websites to give you more ideas.

i really want to find inner peace but i have no idea how to go about it. im always impacient, stressed out, and rushy. is there any websites that can give me really good ways to find inner peace?

Meditation is a great way of destressing. You need to find a time when you can relax and not be interrupted, switch the phone off and ignore the door.
Sit in an upright chair with feet flat on the ground and shoulders relaxed with your hands placed comfortably on your thighs. It also helps to close your eyes during the meditation. I have included a couple of web sites to get you started.

Hope that helps and good luck with the destressing.

Hey i would like to know something about hamsters like how much do you have to clean there tanks?..and what does bedding mean they said put bedding under like 2 inch bedding im not sure what they mean what does that mean..is it hard to take care of them? and should i get one im not sure im researching about them..please give me as much as information as you could about them..like bad things i dont want to buy a hamster and not like it like i want to know like would it be to cold if i put it in a hallway or would it be safe because my parents are strict with pets but they said i could get a hamster but it has to like stay in the hallway where they wont make a big mess and my hallway is like really big plus has a door so like yeah ..i hope you help please..thank youu..bye

Hamsters make good pets if you are prepared to handle them regularly, if not, they are likely to bite when you do try to pick them up. They are best kept in a warmish place with no drafts as they are suseptible to them and can catch cold easily. Not pleasant!

Their urine has quite a strong smell so you need to clean them out a couple of times a week, one of them as a small clean of bedding and one as a big clean out with washing everything in there. If you have a cage set up so that they don't get bored, it takes a long time to clean it out properly so that it doesn't smell.

For the bottom of the cage you could use hay, straw is a bit too hard for them, or shredded paper, but not printed paper as the print can be toxic. For the bedding, you can get special soft wool from a pet shop, don't use cotton wool as it gets hard and is not suitable for them. You will also need hamster friendly disinfectant for cleaning the cage.

They need extras like salt licks, fruit flavoured wood chews, hamster food and you can buy them hamster treats. They also like bits of carrot, celery, apple and raw cabbage (the crunchy stalk part). Don't give them too many treats and never give them lettuce as it can give them diarrhoea, very messy. You could hide the treats around the cage to give them something to do, they hunt for their food in the wild.

They are also nocturnal and very active, so they need tubes and toys for them to play with or they get bored and nippy. If you are going to be disturbed by the sound of a wheel going round all night, maybe a different animal would be more suitable.

They are not very high on the cuddle factor but they are cute. I have had 3 of them and whilst I loved them and enjoyed having them I would not get another.

They usually only live 2-3 years, so if you are looking for a short term pet and don't mind the work involved, a hamster could be the right pet for you.

However, please keep in mind that a pet is a big responsibility, you will need to factor in vets bills if it gets ill. An ill hamster will not generally last long without seeing a vet. They tend to cover illness for quite a while, as it's a show of vulnerability that could be the end of them in the wild.

I realise that most of this is on the negative side of owning a hamster, but if you feel that you would be able to take care of one, keeping all of this in mind, go for it.

Hope that helps some and good luck.

if i have suppperrrrr curly hair like this
http://s109.photobucket.com/albums/n78/BizDontQuit/?action=view¤t=curly.jpg
(not me)
would a ghd give me pin straigh amazingly gorgeous hair and is it easy to use i mean my last straitener didnt do anything about the bumpieness in the back of my head that i cant get??? please help!

My hair is like that picture if I don't use GHD's. But now my hair is wonderfully straight and it doesn't even go curly if it's a windy day. Just a couple of things you need to be careful of with them though, they do get VERY hot, so you need to pull them through your hair quickly or you will burn it, don't leave them near your scalp or you will scald yourself. Always use a hair protector, GHD do one of their own which is very good, otherwise you could damage your hair and it will break off. Don't use it on damp hair and if your hair is thick, section it to straighten, it will be easier to manage, especially on that tricky back area.
Hope that helps and good luck.

How can you tell if a product is not tested on animals? Will it always say it on the bottle (*Not Tested On Animals*)? And if it DOESNT say that on the bottle, does that mean they DO test on animals?

Companies that do not test on animals and use products that have not been animal tested do tend to advertise that fact on their products, so the chances are, that if they do not say this, they either do or have tested in the last five years.

There is, however, something called the Five Year Rolling Law, where if a product has not been tested or retested on animals in the five years, it can be used by non animal testing companies. This law is not supported by some animal friendly organisations like the BUAV, as it means that they can change their minds about it from one year to the next. They may not use the product this year, but they may next year. It allows the manufacturers to avoid making a clear commitment to non animal testing.

There is also FCOD, This is a Fixed Cut Off Date, meaning that a manufacturer will not buy finished products or ingredients from their suppliers that have been animal tested after a fixed date, for example 1995. They can be from any date though. This rule draws a clear line under animal testing and is one of the only ways they can give the message to their suppliers and consumers that they are no longer prepared to profit from animal tested ingredients. If a company does not use a fixed cut off date for these ingredients, even if they claim to not animal test themselves, they are still profiting from suffering by buying in tested ingredients.

Be aware that labels that say cruelty free are not always as animal friendly as they like to make out. They could include ingredients that have been recently tested on animals, they have to abide by the FCOD rules to be truly cruelty free.

This whole subject, as I'm sure you realise, is a bit of a mine field but I have included some websites that should give you more information, but I warn you that a couple of them may upset you, so don't look at those if you feel you won't be able to take it.

I am only 6wks preg. with my 2nd child, with my 1st I was so sick, adn didn't show until 6months or so. with this one, I am already pudging in my tummy, and you can tell. Is this because I am so little, to is it normal? Its so weird I figured it would be like my 1st pregnancy. PLEASE HELP ME

Every pregnancy is different, from symptoms, size, duration, moods, things you want to eat, things you don't etc. You really can't judge one pregnancy by any that came before. This time you could be carrying more water, a bigger baby or more than one baby. Your small size will also make a bump look larger. Without wanting to freak you, I had twins and was in maternity wear at 12 weeks as nothing else fitted me.
If you are that concerned I would suggest you have a chat with whatever doctor is looking after you. They will have seen it all before and should be able to reassure you.
Hope that helps and all goes well for you.

Ok soo theres this guy and i guess he likes me,ALOT! But i've known him forever and i dont want to ruin our frinedship over it. My friend said he was going to ask me out like soon, and i don't know what to say i don't know if i should go out with him, or if i should tell him no, but if i tell him no what should i say?? please help! =]]

If you once cross that boundary it can be very difficult, if not impossible, to go back to how things were before should anything go wrong. That said, if the two of you are meant to be together, it could be worth taking that chance. You really need to decide which is more important to you, the friendship or a relationship and go from there.
Weigh up what feels right for you, no one will be able to tell you this, it has to your decision. You are off to a good start as you have known him for so long, there shouldn't be too many nasty surprises! If he is willing to give it a try, listen to what he has to say, then make your choice.
Maybe your doubt is trying to tell you no. If you do turn him down, be careful not to hurt his feelings or you could lose him to embarrassment. Tell him that you value him too much to want to jeopardise your friendship at this point in time. Let him know how important he is to you and perhaps, some time in the future, you will get together, but not just yet.
Hope that helps a little and the best of luck.

About a month ago I found out that my boyfriend's mom is pregnant! :) I'm so overjoyed, as is everyone else. At first it was a little secret, so I couldn't tell anyone. My boyfriend finally asked his mom if he could spread the word and she gave him the a-okay. This happened a week ago. I'm no longer happy. Everytime I try to tell my parents she's pregnant I feel sick. Not disgusted, literally sick to my stomach. I also feel embarrassed and ashamed and a bit hateful. Not at all hateful towards the baby or his mom but me. I chicken out. Now my boyfiends starting to get a little annoyed with me, as you can imagine. Just writing this makes me feel sick. WHAT SHOULD I DO?! Please, any advice would help Thanks. 13/F

You've just had the realisation hit you that your boyfriends mum is a sexual being with all that that entails. That then transfers to your own parents, which is a difficult concept for most people to grasp, worse when you're just starting to develop in that direction yourself.
You have a lot of emotions whirling around in your head and it's difficult to deal with. Feeling bad about the way you've reacted is not surprising, but give yourself a break. Take some time to come to terms with it all first, then, if you can cope with it tell your parents. Try out different ways to tell them, see what feels more comfortable. Maybe something like, "........'s going to have a baby brother/sister". You then don't have to say pregnant, or having a baby.
Once the baby arrives, if not before, you should be fine with the situation and be on hand with lots of cuddles.
Hope that helps and all goes well.

What does 'Love knows no boundary' mean?

Thanks

You can't put limits on love, it happens where it's meant to and you accept someone regardless of everything. People place boundaries, love doesn't.
Hope that helps. :)

What happened to the little faces on the top right hand corner of questions? I noticed that they disappeared.

If they are not there, moderators have to use their own judgement on what rating to give, rather than follow what others have done before them. This should give a more accurate rating for each question.
I didn't notice to start with that they had gone but I think it is a good idea. :)

ive always been unhappy about my nose. i think its kinda big and i dont know! i know i have to live with it but its something ive always been self-conscious about. and it made me even MORE tonight. you see there is this adorable kid and hes really sweet and hes always thought i was hott my cousin said. but then tonight he came up somehow and my cousin was like he said you werent so hott anymore and because you had a jacked up nose or something. this made me feel really bad about myself because i thought people were getting past seeing my nose. everyone thinks im soo pretty but i just cant get over my nose and sometimes i just think im overreacting but then when people start saying stuff i know its true. i just dont know what to doo.. =(

That is a really awful, shallow thing to say about anyone. If he can say that do you really want to be with him? He obviously lacks any sensitivity as well.
Whilst self confidence should be able to overcome any 'defects' we see in ourselves, there are ways to help. I have included a couple of websites that give you some camouflage ideas. However, if you can love yourself for who you are, most people won't even notice the things you don't like about yourself. They are too busy worrying about the flaws they see in themselves.

I just had the coxsakie virus,
and I still have the 'rash' (kind of like hand foot and mouth, slightly different spots)

the spots look scabby now sorta,
I'm just wondering if anyone knows
how long they will stay?

and how long it takes them to go away?

The best information I have been able to find is that they can last for 7-10 days.
However, the scars from the scabbing can last longer. You could try something like a rich cocoa butter cream to treat any scars you may be left with.
I have included a couple of websites to give you more information, but they do not give a lot of detail about the rash.

Hope that is of some help and that you recover soon.

My dog never stop following my mom, he never wants to go out. he sard some reason. everywhere she goes my dog follow her.. she hase no idea why eather

Dogs are essentially pack animals, so the family they join become their pack. Each pack has its leader, the alpha dog, and it sounds as though he has acknowledged your mother as his alpha dog.
In the wild, the alpha dog is the one who makes decisions and protects the others. If your dog is feeling nervous he could be looking to your mom for protection, or if he is confident, he could be acting as a guard dog or 'back up'. It's your mom that will have the biggest impact on him. If she is the one that usually feeds him, try taking it turns to do this. If she is the one that normally walks him, let others take a turn. If this already happens, he has just decided that she is foundation of the 'pack'.
Getting him used to the idea that it is ok for him to go outside in the garden or backyard by himself is not easy but it can be done slowly. Take him outside, but stand a little distance from him. As he gets used to this, gradually get nearer to the back door so that eventually, you are not outside with him at all.
However, your mom will not be able to stop him following her. It's in his genes and he has chosen her. My dog follows me everywhere in the house, but he will go outside by himself. It's a compliment to your mom actually that he regards her in this light.
Hope that helps and good luck.

Will eating LOTS of carbs in one day cause diabetes? Usually, I watch my carbs pretty closely except probably one day a week. I don't exercise too much. I'm 16 year old female, and my parents or siblings don't have diabetes.

Diet in itself does not cause diabetes, however, if you eat to the point of obesity, this can be one of the factors in developing it.
I have included a website for you to read more information on this.

Hope that helps.

How can I become a better writer? I have trouble starting sentences. I usually use "I, It, the, He/She". I really want to improve my grammar. I want to know how to remember new words easy.

I'm in 10th grade and I don't feel like I'm up to it, even though when I take those tests.. I get above average for english/grammar.

I really like to write but it's no good because I don't know how to describe something well.

Is there any books for me? Any tips?

A thesaurus may be of some help to you, it will give you alternate words for ones you already know. This means that you will be able to avoid repeating a word if it crops up several times in succession. e.g. succession - consecutively, one after the other, on the trot etc.
Another way to improve grammar, is to read good books like the classics. This will improve your vocabulary and grammar at the same time.
With the writing, if you have an idea, try putting it on paper first so you don't stop the flow, then go back and check for any errors or better ways to express yourself. Remember that people like descriptions, it makes them feel part of the story.
Hope that helps and good luck.
