How can I become a better writer? I have trouble starting sentences. I usually use "I, It, the, He/She". I really want to improve my grammar. I want to know how to remember new words easy.
I'm in 10th grade and I don't feel like I'm up to it, even though when I take those tests.. I get above average for english/grammar.
I really like to write but it's no good because I don't know how to describe something well.
Is there any books for me? Any tips?

This means that you will be able to avoid repeating a word if it crops up several times in succession. e.g. succession - consecutively, one after the other, on the trot etc.
Another way to improve grammar, is to read good books like the classics. This will improve your vocabulary and grammar at the same time.
With the writing, if you have an idea, try putting it on paper first so you don't stop the flow, then go back and check for any errors or better ways to express yourself. Remember that people like descriptions, it makes them feel part of the story.
Hope that helps and good luck. [ isis's advice column | Ask isis A Question ]

Also, read more books. Trust me, it really helps. From a collection of the books, you can develop your own style and you can really get kicking!
You can also ask help from a teacher you trust. When I was younger, I thought I was a bad writer, but others disagreed with me. They said I was really good and didn't have critics about my works. When I reached 1st year high school, though, a teacher told me something along the lines of, "You're good, but I'm not saying you're great. What I am saying is that you can be better, and I'll help."
With her guiding me, I became more descriptive and less long-winded and all those things.
By the way, just because you're good in english in school doesn't necessitate that you're good in grammar so don't feel the pressure. Just read a lot and you can learn from others.
Also, from the previous adviser's post, I have to disagree when s/he says that you have to use new vocabulary words. It's not really necessary. For example, if you say something like, "A tall perennial woody plant with its color of nature moves back and forth or sideways in the quasi-horizontal movement of air that is neither warm nor very cold." instead of saying "A green tree sways in the breeze." If you want to make it more interesting, though, you can say, "A verdant tree sways gently in the soft breeze."
There are limitations to how much you can "spice up" your words. There has to be a balanced mix of words so as not to confuse the reader or make the passage boring.
By the way, as for books, read anything. If you can stand it, read encyclopedias. They're interesting (for me) and they're stated in correct grammatical form. Or you can read something as trite and seemingly useless as "The Baby-sitters Club" because those books actually have correct grammar.
Just eat up all the books and I'm sure somehow you'll get better. I'm a writer and an editor and it helps me (even till now!) so I hope it'll help you too.
xojessicaax answered Saturday November 11 2006, 9:05 am: well you should get a writers journal. and just write in it for like 5 minutes straight. dont think just pick a topic say christmas, then you should get off topic and do that for 5 minutes.
if you do that everyday you should get better. you`ll get ideas for writing and stuff..
you can also go to a book store and look for books on writing, it depends on what you want to write.
GrandmaBettyLouis answered Saturday November 11 2006, 12:23 am: I don't know how you can get better at grammar, that just takes practice. But I do have some tips on making your sentences more creative and interesting.
*Show don't tell. If you are talking about somebody being angry say, "She balled up her fist and her face reddened." instead of "She was mad."
Ya know. Along those lines.
*Don't use "be" verbs like was, is, am, etc. Use exciting verbs like 'stroll' instead of 'walk.'
*Use new vocabulary words. If you ise a word 18 times its a permanant part of your vocabulary.
*Read books by David Sedaris. He's a brilliant writer and is very descriptive, funny, loveable.
Plus he is a friend of mine.
