Being emo is NOT a bad thing. It is just a phase that comes and goes before you know it. Just make sure he doesn't cut him self because that's what the traditional emo does. Since your a mother you should just go along with it and make sure he doesn't go too far.

There is nothing wrong with emo. I am not emo, but I do like the style. I think it is more goth to only wear black. Emo to me is about the music. They are sometimes(most often) bi. I find nothing wrong with that. I personally think emo boys are very good looking. Here are some pictures you may find interesting about emo boys.

This is sort of a revival of what the 'alternative' crowd in the 80's did.

I think a lot of kids that get into it feel like they don't relate somehow to the other crowds- for whatever reason- and so they've sort of made their own crowd that's pretty easy to join because you basically just throw on some black clothes, a little attitude....and there you go!

Sometimes it's because their not interested (or great at) sports, in some ways they're more mature than some of the kids that only care about the superficial things- the latest this and that and who's hotter...

So there are lots of reasons. I would want to know why he's joined. And keep an eye on him to make sure it doesn't go too far, like into self-destructive behavior. But you probably have nothing to worry about- this may be just where he feels welcome and like he fits in.

black and eyeliner are a part of emo which by the way stands 4 emotional. but there is one thing you need 2 keep him away from: cutting. sometimes emos are known for cutting their wrists. talk 2 him about the topic "emo" and tell him that there are things your fine with and things that you arent(like cutting). i know a lot of people who are emo and some of them have gotten into cutting. and it leads 2 completly mutilating your body. i have also seen a lot of scars(physical and emotional)

Alright, in my opinion emo is just another stupid stereotype. Emo is short for emotional, usually people labled emo are depressed and have a negative outlook on life. Most people say that being emo means you get depressed and cut yourself, but in reality, people who are emo, are afraid of pain. Make sure your son isn't self mutalating. Based on his age, I think it's just a phase and it will soon pass.

Although ViLily has a point about releasing emotional pain through physical pain or by using drugs and alcohol to numb the pain, not all 'emo' kids express pain in that way. Some release emotion through music, art, writing, etc. Emo is an 'in' trend right now, what with all the new emo bands, and also revived bands such as the Cure. But to be sure that he doesn't fall into that pit of Van Gogh-ness, let him know that you're always there if he needs to talk and if he can't talk to you about something, to find someone who he can.
Hope I told you what you needed to know.

Emo stands for emotional. When emo people feel depressed they cut theyre wrist or try and hurt themselfs in any way to release or ease pain. It becomes addicting after a while and you can't stop. so while your son is still just getting into it try and convince him to not go emo. or sit down and talk to him about if hes depressed or is anything happening that you dont know about. it can change your childs mind about becoming emo and possible make your relationship stronger with your kid.

Basically, if I was his mom, I'd support him, but I'd also try to have him make some friends. or you two need to be like super close. i remember when I was 11, i needed friends, i still do. you dont want him to be antisocial. that can end up making him depressed. he could end up like cutting himself and junk like that. so, basically, if your not like super close to him, i'd try to help him make friends, like just say stuff like.."soo, why don't you ever invite anyone over.. i'll take you guys too..[some like cool amusement park or someting]" Its good that he is himself, and isn't easily influenced. but, 'emo' kids are usually depressed, lonely, when he talked about becoming emo, it could have been a cry for help. and those kids in the future, usually end up doing pot or something.

they don't have the greats reputation in the world, so to speak. i mean i'm not saying for you to go and like change him. because sometimes my mom trys to make me do that. and its just really annoying. but like, give him ideas on other colors to wear or something like that.

if you need any more help, just leave me a message. (:

All emo is, is short for emotion.

It's punk music and an emtotional attitude.

He is no different than any teenage generation before him. They all had their "fashions" and "causes" and this will pass as all teenage fads pass.

It's not goth and it's not dangerous. It's an attitude of "emotions"...

I wouldn't worry and I wouldn't talk much about it as it'll take it's couse and pass soon enough.

Emo is just a harmless fad. Not all emo people cut their wrists or are antisocial, and it's not dangerous. Emo originally stood for emotional rock/pop music, but that is irrelevant now, and emo people are rarely more sensitive/emotional than normal. You'll like:

if his life consists of music and computers, dont you think there's something wrong with that? sure he's 11, and he's got time to change, but ask for him to have some friends over, or get invlolved in school yourself to meet some parents and in the long run get your kid a best friend, or someone else to talk to except you....no offense. :)

Okay well first of all, your son really isn't at the "emo" stage. Emo is the first 3 letters in emotional. Someone who is "emo" usually cuts their wrists because well, theyre emotionally unstable. They feel like hurting their wrists to make the hurting stop inside. Now it sounds like you care for your son a lot, so it doesn't seem like he has many reasons to go emo. To me, I think you are jumping to conclusions. The "emo" style is very popular, but kids can dress and listen to the same music without being emo. {Don't mean to offend anyone with my response}. Hope i've helped!!!

lbwhite89 answered Monday April 23 2007, 6:26 pm:
Well from my understanding emo is short for "emotional" and it's pretty much "sensitive" guys who show their feelings, which are usually depressed.

If you listen to emo music, it's either a bunch of screaming, super depressing, a bunch of whining, or all three put together.

Not to be rude, but it's just a word that guys who think it's cool to hate their life and dress in black but NOT be goth...which is different, sort of.

All the emo kids I know sit at the back of the class and don't talk to anyone. They have that hair that's jet black and covers one or both of their eyes and paint their fingernails and sometimes cry during class. It's very strange. They are also known to self harm (slit wrists).

It's also strange that your son had an "interest" in being emo. Most emo kids would say you don't choose to do that, it's just who they are. It could quite possibly be his 11 year old mind telling him that something is cool when it probably is not.
