i was always told that going on the pill would make your period stop completely (by freinds, not doctors) and lately i've been seeing a commercial about a pill that can reduce your period to only 3 days?? now, is it true that there is such a thing as a birth control pill that can make your period stop altogether, or is that just a myth?

Laney55 answered Wednesday June 21 2006, 3:53 pm: There's nothing that stops them completely, and even the shots aren't guaranteed- you could have no periods or one long one, unpredictable spotting, etc. But if you take regular BC pills and never take the placebo week you won't have a period. In other words, take 21 pills, move on to the next pack. This knowledge comes in helpful if you're trying to "time" your period (for prom or spring break, etc.). You really SHOULD NOT try to skip all of your periods, especially without a doctor's approval. There simply aren't enough studies to determine if it's safe. Remember how everyone thought the patch was safe? [ Laney55's advice column | Ask Laney55 A Question ]

Tulipg17 answered Monday June 19 2006, 8:23 am: Yes, there is a specific pill type that will reduce it to 3 days and another one that will only give you three periods a year (seasonale). While there is no pill disigned for the purpose of stopping your period all year, any constant dose pill brand, when taken so that you skip the "period week" will keep you from getting your period for as long as you take them is this manner. Also, this will not affect the protection agaist pregnancy factor. Lots of woman do this, but you need to talk to your GYN to get the details on how to do it correctly first. beachpeach answered Monday June 19 2006, 4:16 am: To my knowledge, there is no pill that will make your period stop but there are two brands that are FDA approved (Seasonale and I forgot the other one) that will reduce it to around 3 times a year with some side effects. Talk to your doctor about possible options. [ beachpeach's advice column | Ask beachpeach A Question ]
lulabelle answered Sunday June 18 2006, 10:47 pm: There's a new contraceptive that has not hit the market yet called "Anya" which will put women in control of how often they will have their period or even if they have one at all. It will soon be hitting the American/Canadian markets. Personally I feel very uncomfortable with this concept. I think some point, years down the line; it will be found to be the root cause of uterine cancer. You see our menstrual cycle is a cleansing process that is necessary for good health. I don't see a problem w/taking a pill to keep from getting pregnant, but not having a cycle is another story. It could be 10, 20, 30, years from now, but you heard it from me. This will be found as a cause for uterine cancer. But the good news with this contraceptive is you can choose how you want to use it. You can choose to have a cycle, just not every month, maybe every other month or something. I've heard that some people are going to choose to have a cycle once or twice a year w/it. That's better than not at all, at least in my opinion. I hope this was helpful. Good luck!
Notso answered Sunday June 18 2006, 7:59 pm: there's been huge debate over whether or not it's healthy for women to not have their period at all a year. Some doctors say it is, other's say its not. However, at the moment there is no birth control pill avaliable that stops your period (although depo vera the shot, does stop some women from menstruating).
You can use a regular birth control pill to skip your period if you're going camping, or on a trip or something. Seasonle is a birth control pill that claims to only give you four periods a year. However, what they don't tell you is that for one week of every month the hormone dosage is lower so some women will spot.
Some women just have naturally short periods. And when they go on the pill, they may menstruate for less time. It all depends on strength of the pill, and what kind of period you've had before going on it. For example if you've always had a heavy 7 day flow, chances are you won't be able to reduce it to three days. [ Notso's advice column | Ask Notso A Question ]
DancinCutie08 answered Sunday June 18 2006, 7:01 pm: That is completely untrue that the pill makes your period stop.. it regulates it and you get to pick when it happens sorta. what it is is you are on a pill for like 25 days that makes your body think that you are pregnant(you really aren't of course) and then for like 5 days you take a sugar pill which makes your body have your period. the one with the 3 day period is similar you just only have 3 days of sugar pills
and if you skip the sugar pill (which you can do safely for only a month or 2 in a row) you can skip your period for that month
darkblair771 answered Sunday June 18 2006, 6:29 pm: i take the pill and there will be some months my period only lasts like 2-3 days and some motnhs i dont even have a period. but it doesnt altogether stop it. [ darkblair771's advice column | Ask darkblair771 A Question ]
xostarbrightbaby answered Sunday June 18 2006, 6:17 pm: No, the birth control pill won't stop your period it just regulates it. I did see a commercial too about like 4 season period. It just regulates your period, and you only get it 4 times out of the year. You can probally try googleing it or going to a gyno. ♥ [ xostarbrightbaby's advice column | Ask xostarbrightbaby A Question ]
karenR answered Sunday June 18 2006, 5:44 pm: I'm sure if there was everyone would be on it.
You have your period in order to shed the lining of your uterus. I can't imagine doctors prescribing something that would cause that not to happen. 3 days would be OK. I don't think anything makes it stop completely. :) [ karenR's advice column | Ask karenR A Question ]
