Straightening is going to be worse for the hair as you are using more heat and in a more concentrated area. If you want to straighten it, use the protein conditioner after washing your hair and as you straighten each section spray it with a good hair protector like GHD. Good luck. Vikki27 answered Monday April 24 2006, 3:24 pm: As far as I know, the only damage that might be caused to your hair through gel would be possible slight chemical damage. However, any damage would, I imagine, be very light and I don't think this would be much of an issue.
Straightening on the other hand, is a lot more damaging. It looks REALLY nice afterwards but straightening your hair on even a semi-regular basis can cause terrible damage over an extended period of time.
For example, I straightened my hair twice a week ever week for 2 and a half years. I had to stop straightening it in October last year because my hair was actually getting shorter where the ends were so badly damaged!! I still can't straighten my hair now because the ends are recovering. It's getting better but it will be a year or two before I can do anything proper with my hair again.
The best things you can do with your hair if you want to style it without a lot of damage are moussing, gelling and perhaps putting it in some rollers or a similar natural curling tool and leaving it to dry naturally. You can blow dry your hair if you must but do so on a low or medium setting. Blow dry it hot for a few minutes to stop it from being soaking wet but as soon as it gets to a damp stage, switch to a low setting.

Notso answered Sunday April 23 2006, 7:19 pm: if you use the proper prodcuts, split ends won't be a huge issue.
Use a moisturizing shampoo, I find Dove works really well but shop around to find what you like (not Pantene though, as that puts a waxy coating on your hair). Gently pat your hair dry when you get out of the shower, and COMB it, use a detangler if you're prone to tangles. Do not brush your hair when it's wet unless you want really bad breakage. If you don't have to, don't blow dry your hair. Then style whatever way you want. If you are using a proper straightener, like a CHI, split ends won't be a huge issue. Just make sure your hair is really dry when you straighten it.
If you decide to crunch your hair, when you put the product in your hair wet, comb it through. Otherwise you will just have build up in several random areas. [ Notso's advice column | Ask Notso A Question ]
itsz_JESS answered Sunday April 23 2006, 7:11 pm: straightening your hair will give you more split ends so try not to straigten it every day cause then youll get more split ends and then your hair will get all dry and ickkky. well good luck! [ itsz_JESS's advice column | Ask itsz_JESS A Question ]
NinjaNeer answered Sunday April 23 2006, 7:04 pm: Well, your hair will grow at the same rate, whether you straighten it or scrunch it or not. Once your hair has left the root, it is not a living tissue, and so anything you do to it will have no impact on speed of growth.
LondonScene answered Sunday April 23 2006, 6:44 pm: oh my god. that crisis happens to me to! EVERY DAY. what i prefer is to straighten it almost once every two weeks. I find right after turning the water off on my shower not drying it but to brush it. soaking wet. There's a rumor that if you brush your hair in the shower soaking wet then put it in a tight ponytail it will become straighter. Also, there is another which works- where all you have to do is dry your hair with a towel then brush it-until it becomes dry. It is very beneficial AND it keeps your hair healthy. loves2shop86 answered Sunday April 23 2006, 6:41 pm: hey! haha i have always wondered the same thing. i've found that the best thing to do is vary it... straight for a few days, and then scrunch it for a few. variety is probably best, because both gel and heat are bad for your hair, but they are bad for it in different ways. but what you can do to help your hair grow faster and be stronger is wash and condition it, but skip a day every now and then because washing your hair every day strips it of its natural oils! also, deep condition it once or twice a week, and always cut it every 3 to 4 months to get rid of dead ends and help it grow faster! hope that helps! :) [ loves2shop86's advice column | Ask loves2shop86 A Question ]
