Yes, you can. I have several friends who use / have used Trillian in order to instant message people over all sorts of different messaging systems (MSN, Yahoo, AIM etc.)

No, they are two completely differnt programs, however there are some programs that merge all 3 major IM software systems (MSN, YIM, AIM) into one, with one screen name, password, sign on, and away message, but these aren't always virus-proof.
