new goth in town {flames get ones}

Question Posted Tuesday November 29 2005, 4:47 pm

Hey peeps. I am thinking of becoming a goth. But I have some dilemmas.

1 my mom wont let me be what I wanna be. I know the consequences. I told me mom that I wanted to dye my hair black, and she freaked.
2 I cant get past the metaphores. To goths, gothic sayings may have a meaning but when I hear or see gothic sayings or quotes or whatever, all I see is stuff about blood, guts, and death.
3 Idont know any chain stores that has a lot of gotic clothing and silver jewelry with the gothic sighns.

Help.

I don't belive that if some one is a goth he has to wear a spasific kind of clothes and jewelry.
I think being a goth means having a very spasific world prespective, wich is I belive is:
"Life is worthless and death is inevedable"
Some people choose to let everyone know that they are goths by wearing black wearing black makeup or any thing else and some just don't.
And if you turn in to a goth for no reason you will be just folling yourself.

Wow. I'm really surprised at a lot of people's answers here and I wanted to comment on that. As I read through the answers people gave you I noticed that every single one of them was chock full of sterotypes and no one tried to understand you. I think it's awesome that you want to try a new style. You don't have to worship the devil, be depressed, and want to commit suicide to be goth. Goth and all other social classifications, in the end, are based on how you dress NOT on your personality. You don't have to have the attitude, you don't have to believe what "all other" goths believe because truthfully they don't all feel the same way as the stereotypical goth person does.

I don't think I can help much with your question, but I know they sell a lot of goth clothing at Hot Topic. I don't know much about goth stuff otherwise, sorry. Maybe you can convince your mom to let you try a non-permanant black hair dye. Talk to her about everything and tell her that you're not the stereotypical goth person, you just like the style and want to try something different. I hope I helped and good luck!

ok first of all no offense but that is just retarded. why do people label themselves? its just gay. and do you know what goth means?? it mean you worship the devil and if you do go ahead try to be goth. but then youd be a poser. no offense but dont try to be someone your not. go with the flow be your self even if that doesnt mean being gothic. i know alot of people try to but their all just posers dont follow them

Saynotogymclass answered Tuesday November 29 2005, 7:09 pm:
In my opinion you can't just become goth one day. That sounds so dumb for some reason! You just are what you are. "Goth" is the way you want to express yourself. This sounds like when my little sister was 10 she came up to my mom and said "Mom guess what im goth!" It doesn't happen over night. First of all, try to understand the beliefs of the people who choose to express themselves such. Maybe something triggered their sudded need to wear goth type glothing and makeup.

About the hair situation..you don't need back hair to be considered "goth" looking. I've seen many who have blonde, brown, or red hair! Maybe start by asking your mom if you could get red or black hilights. If that isn't allowed, don't sweat it!

About the gothic sayings, maybe try listening to some songs that have them in it. Look deeper into what the syaings are trying to tell you. Things may not appear to be what they really are! A murder may symbolize a break-up with a boyfriend. Blood might represent tears from the "murder". Things like that may be hidden inside these violent sayings.

Goth clothing can be found anywhere you look! Mostly Hot Topic though. I'm not positive but i think Spencer's might have some stuff too. Hot Topic is definately the place to go!!

I hope you consider some of the things I said. I don't usually give such long answers but i felt it was worth it ;-)

First of all

are u sure its goth that you want to be and not punk because Goth is a religion not a dress code. Personally i dont think being punk is that great they're always stuck in depressing moods. i think you should stay how you are.

just a suggestion.

ok i know this isn't advice. But you can't just decide to become goth. If that's not something you just DECIDE. And why do you want to become it anyway? b/c it's COOL? b/c it's ALL THE RAGE? Well i guess you're just a fake like everyone else. Why do you want to be labeled? People like you get labeled as POSERS so
GOOD LUCK

well i dont know if you want to turn goth. goths are people who worship the devil and do sacrafices and things like that. you can wear all black and stuff but not be goth. people who dont really know what goth is classify people who wear all black goth, when theyre not. SOO. just wear all black if thats what you really want. and you can buy all the stuff your talking about at hottopic. which isnt a goth store even though people say it is. but anywho. i know im not really helping i just wanted to put my input on this. so, if thats not really who you are dont do it. but if its what you feel is right then go for it. good luck. and sorry i wasnt really helpin. :[

Okay, well first of all...why do you want to become a goth? If it's for the right reasons..then go for it. If you're changing to becoming a goth because your friends are doing it or it's considered the "cool" thing. Just don't change who you really are. But if you're really into it, you can find that kind of jewelry online, I can almost guarantee you that you won't find it in any stores..Hot topic has some but mostly just kiddie stuff...Gothic clothing can be found on the internet as well...As for the hair dying thing..if your mom won't let you....You need to talk to her about it. Sit her down and give her the reasons that you want to dye your hair.

Tell me how it goes.

Ivy921 answered Tuesday November 29 2005, 5:27 pm:
Goth was initially more of a way of thinking and feeling that translated into music, poetry (often bad poetry) and fashion. Don't be 'goth' if you don't believe it. That's like being a poseur and who wants to be that. If you like the music and the look, do it a little bit, to the amount you like and just enough to bug your mom a little bit but not too much... and also find things that you like that isn't all goth. as for finding the clothes, ask the people whose clothes you like.

AgonyAnt answered Tuesday November 29 2005, 5:24 pm:
While I will say that becoming a goth is not all about appearance, but is also about the attitude, I will answer your question in regards to style.
First, if your mother balks at the idea of seeing her precious child having a radically different hair color, you could always threaten to have your hair shaved and spiked into a mohawk. Then threaten to become a 'Punk' (a style trend all the rage in the 80's). This frightening prospect will trigger something inside her old-fasioned style sense, and she will most likely give in to a relatively small request like dying hair.

Secondly, study poetry. Poetry tends to be the origin of "Goth Sayings". If possible, study Poetry with an veteran Goth, or be taught the art of poetry by a goth. If you hate poetry, or simply dislike the sayings, discard them, as they aren't a staple of the Goth Diet, despite many assurances you may get from the new 'Trend Goths' - those who become Goth because it's what they feel is 'cool'.

Three, the internet is a wonderful source of gothic store names. Google "Goth Merchandise", and prepare to view websites with many stores in all sorts of back-woods towns, or large cities. Once you have a name with an address near you, search on Google's "Search Local" for said address.

I hope you are successful, and congratulate you for not choosing the 'Emo' life-style...

1. your hair doesn't have to be black if you have the attitude.
2. If they don't have meaning to you, don't go by them. a lot of them are from songs by the way.
3. hot topic is a chain store all over the us and jewelry comes from orginal places like flea markets.. the whole point is to be yourself/different.
anything else, lemme know. <3

EDIT!! ouch, a 4.. that hurts! then i missed that...about your mom.. don't go extreme at first. most parents are like that at first, trust me. most get over it tho. just take it one thing at a time. first the music...then the clothes (gradually!) then add some jewelry.

BrokenWings answered Tuesday November 29 2005, 4:59 pm:
To be perfectly honest, i think deciding to be a goth is a strange idea, you should be who you ARE, not what you think is cool. If you dont know what the goth sayings or whatever are, or know where the stores are because you are interested, you arent going to make a very convincing goth even if you do try to look like one.

Anayway, labels are stupid and real people dont need them, think about that.

Take care xx
