Okay my question is long. This is something I am so confused on. Some people say demons do not exsist, but how can they not? We have reports of actual exorcisms and demon possession. Some people have their doubts and still say it's some sort of mental illness and an exocism drives thaty out of them. I believe demons are real, and if I believe demonic possession is real could a possession happen to myself? Now, I am trying to be rational in all and I know there hasn't been a possession/exorcism reported since the late 1940s. But the cases I have read throughly, they sound like real demonic possession and not just a mental illness. In the cases there was supernatural things going on such as levatation, sexual obsenities, foreign languages going on, self-mutilation, vomitting, moving of furniture, etc etc...now how can that be catagorized as a mental illness? But initially some people still believe it is. As for myself, Im really intrested in this sort of thing, I am also wondering if learning too much and sort of becomming obsessed with this sort of thing could open me up to possession? Sometime possession can occur differently for other people, people say the devil is always with you, and filling your mind with thoughts you can't control. Lately I have been having many of those thoughts, evil thoughts. Contemplating suicide, self-mutilation, alot of anger, could I be getting into this too far or could it be something else like depression etc, I know none of you can give me a straight answer but I would like input on what your beliefs are about this whole thing, it's very very hard to understand and complicated.

You say that the last reported possessions were in the 1940's? Was the evidence at the time properly certified? It couldn't have been without the use of proper scientific equipment. There is always the possibility that witnesses are unreliable, or as you mentioned, mentally ill.
None of these facts have been properly verified, and though there is room for speculation, I feel that it would be unwise to believe everything you read.
From what you said in your question, it could be that you have been looking a little to deeply into this idea and could indeed be developing an obsession. The fact that you have acknowledged that you may well be developing an obsession is a good sign. If you can identify when you are becoming too deeply immersed for your own safety and draw back for a while you would have completed another positive step.
Self-harm, contemplating suicide are quite commonly known symptoms of depression, and anger is a lesser known one. Could it be possible that depression and lack of motivation in life is causing you to obsess to heavily over this particular subject? Take a few steps back, speak to someone you trust or a hired shrink of some description, and re-asses.
I would urge you to think as rationally as possible over the idea of demons.
I tend to think that demons/the Devil are just metaphors for our darker emotions and thoughts, though I wouldn't go quite so far as to say that an excorism could drive them out.
I hope this helped.

i belive in demons ghost witchs ect. i fear the possession of my self to them daily, also contemplating suicide then realizing it and wondering where these thoughts are coming from. i belive they are there but.. (rember this is just my opionion)
i think they will only possess the ones who dont belive so that there ways will not be "found out" like a demon will possess a man who does not belive in anything. so that he will belive it is depression or somthing. and if u belive you will be able to have the power to "fight them off" because u have an advantage. and about the fact that they havent been reported since the 40's i belive that they have just in diffrent more modern ways, Rape, murder, contemplating thoughts until you crack. i say you should read the books not like fact books but like books like ghost hunter and books people wrote about their experiences, get more of an advantage.

AlienHumanologist answered Tuesday October 4 2005, 7:08 pm: If you find yourself in this position ("contemplating suicide, self-mutilation, alot of anger") there are many much more likely explanations than demonic possession.
You mention the late 1940's as the time of the last reported possession/exorcism. If you are thinking of the case that inspired the fictional film, The Exorcist, then I advise you to read the following article with an open mind:
When one researches the subject deeply, some of those 'supernatural' activites seem to evaporate into something much more natural.
Certainly, the boy was very troubled, but it seems likely that his troubles came from within. This does not mean that his experiences were normal or safe, but there is no evidence of any demons in what *really* happened. Other cases from history are just as likely to have been exaggerated by the passage of time. Cases where a normal explanation was discovered would never become famous. The famous cases are famous precisely because they have been exaggerated from what originally happened.
If you fear you may suffer from similar difficulties, then certainly obsessing about demonic possession can be a recipe for a self-fulfilling prophecy, even though there will be no real demons involved.
Human brains are unfortunately very liable to self-delusion. Millions of humans carry out conversations with imaginary beings or have a feeling that they will win the lottery.
Although the concept of demons may be interesting to study or to see portrayed in fiction, one should never lose sight of the fact that they are just make-believe and/or the results of mental illness and centuries of ignorance of human psychiatry.

EvilCheshire answered Tuesday October 4 2005, 3:57 pm: I believe in things like that, some people need to see it to believe it though. You can't really blame them for being skeptical. After all the crap they see hollywood dish out about the supernatural happenings it just makes it out to be an extremely fake and unlikely thing.
I think if you believe in it, you're not really opening up to it. A lot of people that have had supernatural expierences say they've never really believed in anything like that. I think if you believe in something hard enough you mind is actually going to click into thinking something is happening to you.. I don't know if that makes sense.
Tony answered Tuesday October 4 2005, 3:35 pm: Think about it if someone knew everything about demons and they were right do you think they would still want to know the truth or just forget about it. The fact is most people wouldn't want to know the truth because they cant control it. it takes a strong human being to accept the truth rather than hide from it or deny it the question you need to ask yourself is which one am i [ Tony's advice column | Ask Tony A Question ]
mylordwon answered Tuesday October 4 2005, 2:30 pm: The devil is not all present like God. If he was, every plane would be knocked out of the sky. The devil is a fallen angel so the devil himself is not always with you. He has an army; legions of demons (fallen angels that chose to follow him) that work on individuals. The devil uses these demons, and people who are willing to listen to the evil thoughts that are planted in their minds, to plan. However, if his plans are foiled, it's because someone chose to take a stand and said "NO!". He will try and get as many people who are willing to reject the only one who could save them - Jesus. If you have Jesus, the devil has no power over you at all. He can't posess you because Christ is in you. John 8:36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. Are you free? Do you have Jesus? If so, here is what God has to say:
1Pe 5:8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
Jam 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
Phi 4:4-8 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
advicegodesses2 answered Tuesday October 4 2005, 1:27 pm: Hey,
I have the same thoughts that you have. I am also very interested in this sort of thing too. I think that you might a have a slightly bigger chance of getting possessed than everybody else.
SleepyHedgehog answered Tuesday October 4 2005, 12:56 pm: well...personally i woldnt get too involved with this stuff...i'd say reading about it is pretty safe, you know, but going to places and doing things is not. definetly not.
i hope your evil thoughts are something like depression because it can be treated while if it has something to do with your interest in demons...then i see trouble...
i think all the things you wrote about do exist. and to those people who dont i'd give a quote from the movie constantine "you dont believe in the devil but the devil believes in you"
