Swallowing pills

Question Posted Tuesday August 2 2005, 3:42 pm

I have the weirdest phobia (Well to me) I can not swallow pills. My sister used to have trouble with it too, but she eventually got over it. My younger brother has ADD so he has to have pills so he it's no problem for him. But when I was little I had choked on something and I blacked out before it was dislodged, and even though I know it's not going to happen just because I try swallowing a pill, I still have a "pill phobia". Anyway is there anything I can do that will help me get over it. Or just ways to make swallowing pills easier? I'm almost 15, and a sophmore in high school, and I'm still telling doctors when I'm sick that I need a liquid or chewable, I don't want to be an adult doing the same thing. It's embarassing. I have friends that won't swallow a pill unless they have to, but even if it was the only way, I'd rather just be sick. So if you have tips on making swallowing pills easier or just getting over the phobia, please let me know!! Thanks in advance!

I was always told that you weren't allowed to break open or cut up any form of pills and that they would only work if you swallowed them whole. Is that true? Or was it just ways to get me to swallow them?.

My dad used to have the same problem and a lot of people do. But he tried sticking the pill in his food and then swallowing water down after. And another way you can try is chewing up food and then putting the pill in your mouth so you swallow it with the food. About the additional information I have no clue about that!

Hope I Helped :)

My sister has this same problem and she's 22; it can take time to get over. It is true with most pills that you're not supposed to break or crush them, sometimes they have a time-release coating on them that releases the medicine gradually into your system, and you can overdose if you crush it and lose the time-release coating. I don't think it's too big of a deal if you ask for liquid or chewable when you're an adult, but if you really don't want to do that, then you just have to set yourself to getting over the phobia. Just get a big glass of water or milk, put the pill in your mouth, and wash it down. If the pill isn't huge, just tell yourself that you've swallowed food chunks bigger than that, and that it's not going to get stuck, and you'll be fine. Just remember not to panic or freak out as you're swallowing it, because that makes your throat contract and you'll feel like the pill is getting stuck. Just relax, and it'll slip right down. Oh, yeah, one more thing, don't take the pill with orange juice or grapefruit or anything citrus, because it lessens the effectiveness of most medicines, and in some cases can cause dangerous interactions. Hope this helps! Good luck!
Love,
Nevaeh

Don't worry, I used to have a sort of pill phobia as well. It used to be pretty embarrassing to say "Oh no, I can't take pills!"

I think the best way is to take pills every day because it makes you find a technique to get it down you're comfortable with and you start getting used to it. It might be a little hard at first, but you'll get it. Dear gosh no! I don't mean you should take any old pill every day so you can "practice". You can take a vitamin pill and other pills that will help your body. That way you can kill two birds with one stone! I think that partially helped me get over being afraid of pills. I took them everyday and I still am.

For everyday during the first week or more when I was taking the pills, I would be afraid of swallowing. Sometimes I'd have it sitting in my mouth with the water but I couldn't make it go down. And when I did try to swallow sometimes the water would go in before the pill did, oops! lol.

Anyway, here are some more tips. Place the pill at the back of your tongue. Not so that you gag, just so that when you drink water it will go right in. Don't worry if it gets caught in your throat because you can always drink down as much more water as you need and the pill WILL go down. That's why you should fill your cup with lots of water.

This is common sense, but if the pill is ovalish, make sure the pill will go down the slim way and not the other way around. It'll make it easier to swallow.

Good luck!

Hello there,

I have never had any trouble with pills, so I don't know what to say about that that hasn't already been suggested.

IMPORTANT: You must NEVER break open medications, especially timed release ones.

There are pills that have one kind of medicine on one end of the capsule, and anoth ot the other.

They are meant to be released at a certain point in your digestive tract and can be really harmful if you take them any other way.

I cannot tell you enough about how important it is that you take anything like that in its whole and complete form.

Whomever told you that you shouldn't break these things open was definitely on your side.

Try swallowing it with something to drink [like a slushie or pop] or maybe try food. Another good idea is always to get some kind of beverage in your mouth then put the pill in, that SHOULD help you to swallow it. You can always cut the pill up into smaller pieces.

It's natural to for some people to have problems swallowing a pill no matter what their age.

Try starting out with smaller pills that are coated. They tend to go down easier. Place the pill as far back on your tongue as you can and wash it down with lots of water.

i know somebody who puts pills in water and lets it dissolve, but i can assure you that tastes SO BAD. its not really that strange that you are scared cause there is a phobia about peanut butter getting stuck to the roof of your mouth...
the second the pill goes in make sure to drink water cause that will make it go down easier. when youre nervous about something like doing a flip off the diving board, the first time you do it (and make it) you feel really great and it makes you wanna do it again. then it gets easier and easier everytime. im not saying you will ever enjoy taking pills, but you should just try it sometime and have someone there just incase you do choke, which is very unlikely if you swallow with water. thatll make it easier each time. after a while it shouldnt seem like anything to you.
hope i helped!

Don't be embarrassed by asking doctor for liquid medicine when available. Many adults have trouble swallowing pills for one reason or another. Putting them as far back on your tongue, or putting them in chocolate syrup might help....but bet you've already tried those. Just know you aren't alone and don't fret over it :)

I used to be scared of taking pills too, but there were some medications that I could not get in any form BUT pills. The way I learned to take pills, and the way I still do, is this: Put the pill on the VERY back of your tounge. Then take a big gulp of water, hold it in your mouth for a sec(your cheeks should be puffed out - thats how much water you should have in your mouth) and then just swallow. You wont even notice that you swallowed a pill. If its in caplet form, and you can't just take it regular by mouth, break it apart and put it on something like ice cream or pudding, and then just eat it. If it is in a regular pill form - something such as asprin, ask the doctor if it is okay to crush it up, and if so, crush it and put it in some food to eat. That should work for ya!

I don't really see this as an overly embarrassing thing. I mean.... I can't imagine someone actually making fun of a person because they chew their pills instead of swallowing them. A teenager maybe, but not as an adult. It just doesn't seem like a big deal.

But, anyway, here's a few things you could try. I used to have trouble swallowing pills, but, after getting sick for a few years, taking daily birth control, and other things, I got used to it. When I was younger, and I first started to take pills, I would get the caplets. When you tear the caplets apart, inside is the medicine part. You can sprinkle it over ice cream or whip cream and take it like that.

That seems like a nice alternative to asking for chewable tabs. Just ask for caplets. You can get anything in this form, like painkillers, vitamins, etc.

Until you get used to swallowing pills, you can do that. But, if you want to "practice" you should try something small, like a tic tac. Fill your mouth with water, put your head back, and put the pill towards the back of your throat. This seems to sort of help me get the pills to go down faster, or smoother.

Maybe you could also practice with something that dissolves quickly, or something soft. This could help you get over your fear.
