I am in 7th grade and I am in level math... Next year I am skipping Pre-Algebra and taking Algebra.. can any1 give me any expectations or any math tips? Thanks a bunch!
OrangeChikn answered Wednesday May 18 2005, 10:50 pm: My only tips are to do your best and if you are struggling ASK YOUR TEACHER FOR HELP. I know it may seem uncool, but it really can do you, your grade, and your classmates a world of good. :) [ OrangeChikn's advice column | Ask OrangeChikn A Question ]
augustagurrl answered Wednesday May 18 2005, 5:58 pm: im in 7th grade and in algebra. i luv it and it is soo much fun but i can tell you right now. youre gonna have a lot of good days and a lot of bad days. if it doesnt come naturally to you, then its gonna be really hard to learn. if it does..you're really lucky.
you learn how to factor and quadratic functions etc. its not like pre algebra that much but its really fun.
ps if i completely got you stressed..dont worry. its really fun!
hope i help

mellophones_rock_77 answered Wednesday May 18 2005, 4:07 pm: well if you're smart enough to be skipping pre-algebra then you'll probably be fine...but if you end up needing help, just ask questions in class or go in to school early or stay late...or if worst comes to worst...get a tutor [ mellophones_rock_77's advice column | Ask mellophones_rock_77 A Question ]
SoNuLiCiOuSsS answered Wednesday May 18 2005, 12:39 am: Algebra isnt that different from pre-algebra... it's just a lil bit more advanced... if you do good in pre algebra you'll do fine in algebra... i actually thought it was fun... but that's just me... xo_underneath answered Tuesday May 17 2005, 11:19 pm: Well from my opinion, I don't think you should skip Pre-Algebra. Trust me, I know. I never had it and in 8th grade they sent me straight to Algebra 1. I almost failed because I didn't understand it at all. So I had to take it again my 9th grade year and I passed it. If you want to skip it you can, but I think you might want to try going to a Pre-Algebra summer class or something if you can. It might suck, but you don't want to have to take a class again, lol.
FunnyCide answered Tuesday May 17 2005, 10:04 pm: You'll regret skipping Pre-Algebra. Trust me. I skipped it (long story) and Algebra is so much harder for me. Yeah, I'm not failing, but it's not easy. (of course, the book I'm using doesn't help...)
Just study hard, if you have questions, ask them. If there are two negatives, it makes a positive, if there are three negatives, it makes a negative; if there are four negatives, it makes a positive, if there are five negatives, it is a negative. (etc., etc. if it's an even number of negatives it's positive, if it's an odd number of negatives it's a negative. Confusing, yes. Hard, not really)
Keep your chin up.
If you see a problem that looks like the following, don't be intimidated.
-[-(-{-(-4)})] = -4
If you counted, there are five negative signs. That makes the four a negative. The following problem results in a positive number:
-[-(-{-(3)})] = 3 (or +3 - whichever you prefer)
In algebra, problems look very scary, but they're really not that hard. Take the following problem as an example: (Sorry I can't do the correct symbols.. oops. lol)
mn + m (to the "N" power) = n (to the "M" power) + (the "N" root of) m if m = 4 and n = 2
[Here's how you should write the problem out. "X" stands for multiply or 'times'. when a number has asterisks seperating it from something, it means X number to the x power. Like 4*2* would mean 4 squared]
As you can tell, I continously made the problem smaller by solving one part of it at a time. I never put an equals ( = ) sign. In Algebra, you don't use them. The last number at the bottom of the problem is the answer you're graded on. If you didn't put the answer at the bottom, sorry - it doesn't count.
Another indimitating problem looks like this:
xxyyx*2*y*3*x*3*y*4*
You see, you add the numbers that are next to a certain letter (x or y) and then order the letters next to each other (x's together, y's together) so that the answer looks something like this:
KatLynn answered Tuesday May 17 2005, 10:04 pm: Personally, I thought Pre-Algebra was a waste of time. I took it 4 or 5 years ago but I still remember it. I sat in that class bored to death and learned nothing new all year. Passed the class with a straight 100. I'm sure you'll be fine in Algebra. Just pay attention and get help right when you don't understand anything. [ KatLynn's advice column | Ask KatLynn A Question ]
x0xMrSm answered Tuesday May 17 2005, 9:44 pm: im in 7th grade and i'm in advanced math (aka i do 8th grade math)...and i'm doing pre-algebra now...so i have a preview of algebra...and i think it is oober hard...most if it is kinda easy...but some of it is REALLY confusing...
basically...its math, and math is tough. [ x0xMrSm's advice column | Ask x0xMrSm A Question ]
S_C answered Tuesday May 17 2005, 9:36 pm: Well I took prealgebra and made A+ in that class, and now that I'm taking algebra I'm making an A+ (or whatever a 97 is, maybe just an A)
But I think it was MUCH easier since I took prealgebra. Everyhing in algebra 1a was completely review for me from prealgebra, but algebra 1b, was a little harder. I think it's SOOO easy, but that might just be because I took pre algebra.
Ummm, well I don't really have tips for you. But in my classes we learned lots of songs to help us remember formulas such as Y=MX+B. and y-y1=M(x-x1)... and a lot of other things.
But if you EVER need help on your math homework I will literally completely work it out over the computer but I will NOT go far enough to give you the answer. I'll work it out until the very last step and tell you how to get the answer from there, but won't give you the actual answer because that's technically cheating. But really if you ever need help on algebra ask me and I can give you step by step how to do it. Good luck.
You might want to try and do pre-algebra because it'll make life a whole lot easier, but do whatever you can. [ S_C's advice column | Ask S_C A Question ]
