Speech

Question Posted Monday May 2 2005, 7:14 pm

I have to give a speech in fron of the whole class next week, and I'm absolutely terrified. I am really bad at speeches. I start shaking and I can't read my notcards. Does anyone have any suggestions to help me get over my fear?

When you look at the people in the clas look over their heads not at them..
try finding a spot to look at where there is nobody there!

I know exactly how you feel. Do you have to show pictures in your speech? If so, you could see if you can use a projector and then you will be in the dark and not have to worry about people looking at you. Otherwise you need a really good nights sleep the night before and take some rescue remedy with you. You could put a sticker on the wall at the back of the classroom so whenever you look up you can focus on that so you won't catch anyone's eye. The worst bit is starting the speech. Once you've started it will become easier and easier and you just have to think that everyone will be worried about giving their own speech than really concentrating on yours. Don't worry and good luck x

Practice a lot. Just go up there and pretend your talking to no one. Pretend that you are practicing. Just don't lose your cool and stay focused.
Hope I helped!

Looks like you have a lot of good advice here already! I don't have much to add to it. I recommend the looking over their heads thing. Thats what I did. I only have one thing to say about looking at your friends. If they are the serious type great. But, If they are goofs that will try and make you laugh...don't look at them.
They will get you going too! :)

I am the same way. I start to speak and my voice cracks, and it's just not good. What I do is just pretend I'm practicing at home in the mirror. If you can, try to have something to do with your hands to keep you "occupied", like making gestures or holding a pen. Practice a lot beforehand so you definitely know what you're reading. Hope I helped. ♥ Kristen

Aha, public speaking is my specialty:-)
When I was giving a speech, you just need to take deep breaths and relax. Look only at the friends that you have in your class, and look at the teacher. Mentally prep yourself- "I can do this" "I am strong" "The audience will love me". Hold your notecards in one hand and use the other hand to emphasize points with light gestures while you speak. Are you passionate about your subject? Let it shine through. Show them why your topic is so captivating and interesting. Make the audience think that you're the best.
Stage fright is one of the most common fears in the world. When you are about to give your speech, remind yourself this- The people in the audience are your classmates and peers. These people know what it's like to stand up and be terrified. Tell your friends that you're worried about this speech, and take comfort in their words. Look at them while you give your speech. That should give you an extra boost of confidence once you commence. Just finally remember this- You are only afraid of public speaking because you tell yourself you are afraid of public speaking. Tell yourself that you love public speaking. Tell yourself that you're fabulous at public speaking. Just pretend to have a conversation with the whole audience, and they will love you to bits and you will be just fine.
Good luck and I hope you do a great job!

Micah answered Monday May 2 2005, 7:38 pm:
dont think about it too much, you will shyche yourself out. study your cards and just relax, dont look at the students.. look aat a stop above them.. but dont just stare, if you stare it will look like you are nervous. i know that you think that everybody will be expecting your best and if they see your nervous then they will make fun of you, but who cares about them first of all. and im sure none of them would be comfortable in doing it so just dont worry about them. if you are shaking wh your taling it will make your voice shaky.. do your best not to chake.. just relax and do your best. youll be fine!

dear speech,
i have the same problem. i hate makind speeches! the best thing to do is study your notes about 10 minutes a day before the speech and then you will pretty much memorize them. also when you do the speech pick a spot on the wall above the kids heads and talk. that way it appears that you are looking at them but you are really not!! lol.

this is what i say...its all in your head (no i dont mean your crazy) I mean, nobody is there to laugh at you or expect for you to be perfect. They are all in the same boat..and nobody really likes to get up and talk in front of a class. Just present your iunformation, get it over with..u wll be fine
