Deciding Where to Go and What to Study

Question Posted Wednesday August 18 2004, 1:30 pm

I'm going to be a junior in high school and I have no idea what I want to major in, where I want to go, or even what I really want in a college. How can I start narrowing down the search and decide where I want to apply??

Think about what kind of things you enjoy doing. Write down a list of jobs you think you would enjoy doing. Research these jobs and then hopefully narrow down your choices. Then, it should be easier to decide on the type of college you would like. There are also many sites on the internet to help, like collegeboard.com.

I didn't even know what i wanted to do when i applied to universities. I just applied to a few i liked and finaly i chose the local university because if i was wasting my time doing something i didn't want to do, i'd at least be spending less money. So i'm in my 2nd year here and i've finaly decided i want to be a teacher...but i only decided that this past summer. It's so hard to chose what you want to do for the rest of your life...you've just gotta kind of narrow it down to the things you love the most and work from there.

Haha, I don't have a clue what I want to do // where I want to go, and I'm going into my senior year. You don't have to know what you want to major in until you're already in college, so don't worry about that just yet =) But anyways, go to college fairs + stuff and talk to the reps. Start looking around on the internet + requesting information from different places. If you talk to your school guidance counselor, they can help you out, too.

I still haven't decided what I wanna do yet. You do have to decide in about a year and a half where you wanna go. And if you're interested in something, find a college that's good in that area.

Well, you don't need to be to stressed right now. I am a sophomore in highschool and I have no idea what to major in or where to go or what I want in a college. One way you can narrow down your possibilitys is by finding what you really love to do. Some people love teaching; so they search for a good college that can get you your degree in that. Some people love to dance; so they search for a college that offers a major in dancing. So first decide what you want to do, and then start searching for colleges that offer that major. I hope this helps. Good luck! And remember: DONT STRESS!!

Go talk to your guidance counselor (sp? lol) at your highschool, normally they can either 1) help talk to you about your interests, and then narrow it down from there, or 2) refer you to a person that can.

Otherwise, what i would do is a huge web type thing. Mentally or draw it out on paper. Think about the things that really interest you, like sports, reading, psychology, art, acting, singing, playing an intstrument, math, science, etc. and then think about all the jobs that go along with those and decide if those are subjects in any courses you'd be interested in.

Then, decide what you want in a college. Do you want to have a degree from an Ivy League school? or does that not really appeal to you? If money is an option, decide on whether to go to a nearby school or what not.

Junior year in high school is when the pressure can really build up - suddenly, all anyone talks about is college, you'll probably start applying to schools soon, and your teachers will be stressing the importance of your grades.

The key thing to remember is that you don't have to make every decision now. Most people go into college without a declared major, and those who DO pick a major beforehand often change majors by the time they graduate.

I think one of the best ways to get to know colleges is by visiting them and getting a feel for the place. Ask the college to set you up for a weekend visit, and they'll pair you with a student. Or just go for the day and observe - ask people how they feel about the school, sit in on a class, walk around campus. Seeing places in person will give you a much more accurate idea than the brochures which are probably flooding your mailbox.

College will be a fun time of life when you'll learn a lot about yourself and the world; if you're getting stressed, talk to your friends...they'll relate. Bottom line, pick a place you feel suits you - small/large, private/public, city/country - and the rest will follow.

Good luck.

You don't have to choose a major right away. Most people change their major at least once during college, anyway! If you can answer any of these questions it might help you narrow things down:

Would you prefer small or large classes?

Big city or small college town?

How far from home do you want to be?

What extracurriculars are you interested in (including fraternities/sororities)

Oh, and take the PSAT.

hey, i'm gonna be a senior this year so i kno what you're talking about completely! lol, i finally kno which schools i want to apply to! the first thing to do is decide how far away you want to go and then you'll have an area to look in...then use your estimated sat scores to decide what league of colleges you qualify for...and, of course, money is an issue and private schools cost more so unless ur parents have money or you may get a scholarship, you may want to look at public schools - then again, don't rule any school out based on cost! cuz u can always do work-study and stuff like that...look at which schools have good reputations, especially in the areas taht interest you ~ in most schools, you can go in undecided so definitely don't stress about not knowing what you want to major in...other factors include size, location (urban, rural...), single sex or coed.,sports teams............

really, tho you shouldn't be worrying just yet, cuz i definitely didn't know this time last year ~ this summer i went to visit schools for tours and that helped me a lot cuz u can see the campus and ask questions...my mom helped me a lot by going onto collegeboard.com and you can compare colleges and find colleges similar to the ones that interest you....it'll all come together!! and don't be shy about talking to your guidance counselor ~ that's their main job!
