about

I'm a vegan. I like glam rock and androgynous males. I have two cats. they're mystical beings. I'm going to college in less than a month.

advice

I have recently found a cat and her three kittens living under my neighbors shed. Me and my friends have been feeding them cheese and tuna, but we are running low on that. So I was wondering what other things cats likes to eat other than tuna and meat, is there any type of bread they'll like or vegetable. Anything would work..Also the kittens do approach me but everytime I try to pet them they run away but the mother isnt afraid how do I get them to allow me to pet them?

you cannot feed them milk. ever. and it's probably safe to just let them be because the mother will feed them.

What do I feed cats??????? HELP FAST

around the house items you can feed cats in a pinch:

kittens:

baby food in meat flavors (mashed)
soymilk (do NOT let your cats drink regular milk. cats are lactose intolerant and you'll end up with a pukey cat).

cats:

just about anything.

I am looking for a breed of dog (mixed is fine) that is especially good for children, and it would be great if it did not shed much. Thanks for any suggestions!

this question is sort of like asking, "hey. which race makes a better boyfriend?" there's no clear answer that doesn't contain stereotypes. any dog won't shed much living in a place with one season. it's not in their best interests. and any dog will not be good with children if it's been kicked all day by medical "researchers." go to the local animal shelter. take your kids. have them pick the dog after several visits. unlike cats, older dogs tend to be either much nicer or much meaner than puppies though puppies are "kyooot." they grow up and if not properly socialized they won't be adorable in any respect.

I've completely given up junk food. I don't eat fast food, candy, sodas, french fries, pizza, ice cream, potato chips, donuts, all that stuff. So anyways, today my dad, my brother and I went to McDonalds for lunch and I didn't get anything, I said I'd wait to eat lunch when we got home. Then my bro said "You're just afraid of getting fat. And he waved a french fry in my face." I didn't know what to say... and it was embarassing. I'm not afraid of getting fat. I eat plenty!! Just not junky stuff. I want to live a healthy life. And some of my friends joke that I'm anorexic cause I won't eat popcorn at the movies or drink sodas with them. What do I say when they do that??

as a vegan, I experience the same situations you do, but more extreme. if I'm going to the movies I pack my own popcorn and hide it under a flap in my bag. if we're going out to dinner I suggest an ethnic restaurant (indian food! yay!) so that I can eat something other than salad. at potlucks I bring several dishes that I make sure taste fantastic. I never talk about how I miss anything I used to eat. most importantly, I never look like I'm sad about not eating meat or dairy or eggs. I never portray myself or put myself into situations where I become the sad-looking vegan who has nothing to eat but salad because I know that I eat better food than most people. and I do eat a lot of delicious food. say that it makes you happier to eat healthy because that's probably true.

Okay, I'm scared to tell my mom... I think I might be bisexual.I'm afraid to tell anyone but my one close friend. So what should I do because I know it's a sin. Help!?!?!?

lay low for a while. don't tell anyone until you absolutely know you're bisexual for sure. only hint it if you're around people you've just met and don't think you'll see afterwards. see how interacting feels in that zone and then proceed with caution. my biggest suggestion is not telling your parents until you're out of your home. it will be a lot easier that way.

ok so i am lactose intolerant but i love icecream and chocolate milk and cheese so i have been kinda putting up with the dirreha the farting the sometimes if i eat alot puking and upset stomaches but i realised that it is getting worse as i keep on doing this why?the lactade pills work abit to help but i always forget to take them and also wat are some recipes for yummy snack foodsthat dont involve milk that are realitivly easy thnx=]

tofutti makes an ice cream made of tofu (that tastes more like frozen custard than ice cream). silk chocolate milk tastes a bit more bean-y than regular milk, but it's delicious like chocolate wafers or sugar cookies. and well, I haven't found any good all-purpose cheese substitutes. for general uses in italian food, I use veggie shreds. I've heard that there's an english product called cheezly that tastes remarkably similar. as for cooking without cheese, my favorite cookbooks are Vegan with a Vengeance, Vive le Vegan, and the Ultimate Uncheese Cookbook (which I've never cooked from, but I've eaten from it). These three don't have meat either. vegan cookbooks such as these are probably your best bet.

Are there any foods that are impossible to get food poisonign from, and foods that are really hard to get it from? If you could list them in two different categories that would be great. :]
Thanks!

if you avoid meats and dairy you have a much smaller chance of getting food poisoning. veggies are safe to eat at any temperature while meats and dairy have to be thoroughly cooked and kept at a constant temperature that's safe for them.

if you never cook with or eat meat or dairy or eggs, you will probably never get food poisoning. yet another reason to be vegan.

How could I build up my immune system without getting exposed to germs? I'm germ-phobic, and I want to stay really healty and not get sick. Thanks. :]

living off of local fruits and veggies will help with allergies. especially if you eat local honey. there's not much you can do to boost your immune system, but you can guard yourself against some illnesses by changing your diet. there are tons of books on illness-proofing available at all the major bookstores.

Hi, I was wondering if it hurt when you got your wisdom teeth taken out, like afterward when you woke up? Any info. from the surgery or w.e would be great, thanks.

it really depends on how bad your teeth are growing in. three of mine were impacted, growing into my jaw joints on both sides. so they had to break the teeth to get them out and also go in through the sides. I had extra-big wounds that bled for about an hour afterwards. but it was more uncomfortable than painful. if you're luckier than I was you you'll still have the novacaine and anaesthesia wearing off for the first few hours and you'll sleep through it. I was awake enough to taste the blood in my mouth and the soaked bits of gauze. again, not painful, but extremely uncomfortable. try to be as personable as possible to the staff. the more at-ease you seem the better off they'll treat you. and you can all be calm together. also, make sure you ask for a water syringe before surgery to clean out your wounds. it's a lot less uncomfortable to shoot water into them than it is to swish out your mouth with salt water (which you'll have to do for a period anyway so as not to dislodge stitches). and try not to eat meat or animal products for three or four weeks after you get your teeth pulled. it's more likely to cause infection and it doesn't taste fantastic in shake-form which is how you can expect to be eating.

one final word: pudding.

edit: even if you're told that you may not need them out now, you probably will need them out eventually. this is especially for females. I was told at 12 that I was fine with mine, but ended up getting them out 4 years later after suffering through them coming in and forcing my jaw to lock. I ended up having to have my jaw realigned during my wisdom teeth surgery. I'm all about having them removed.

When they do an IV... does it hurt?

And how long does it take for you to be "put out"

-Wisdom teeth getting pulled out-

I really dont like needles..

you can actually have the anaestegiolist use regular laughing gas to knock you out before inserting an IV and beginning the surgery. that's how I had my wisdom teeth pulled and it was completely painless.

Does anyone know what the name of this song in this video clip is?

http://www.zippyvideos.com/8013955965788276/picture_002/

I really need it to practice to and no one can tell me what it is..and i would appreciate it if the moderators would quit deleting this question. I really need to know and once someone tells me i'll gladly delete the "filth" myself..gosh..could you atleast let one person answer...What good is this site if I cant ask what the name of a song is? Geez...So anyways...if anyone could help i'd greatly appreciate it.

the good of this site is that we can help people out in crisis situations. you're not in a crisis. an average person can figure out the name of a song based on its lyrics and using google provided that they know how to spell.

why don't you try that?

hi once more! if you don't feel like answering my questions you dont have to. thanks so far

do you think people don't need to eat animals at all, that protein can be gained from nuts/tofu even though people have these incisor teeth, i think, that are made for eating meat too since we're omnivores

also what do you think about dairy?

we don't need meat. historically, before the elizabethan age we didn't eat meat. we survived on protein from beans just fine. cats are carnivores. look at their teeth. we do not have crazy sharp teeth like cats. we have teeth similiar to horses. horses are herbivores. meat has only been known to cause osteoporosis, heart disease, kidney disease, colon problems, irregular bowel movements, etc. it does a lot more damage than good.

cow's milk is for baby cows. not humans.

i hope its okay to ask you questions. thanks for answering them!

do you think sometimes umm I'm not sure who, but like companies/farmers/no idea/etc will use an animal for all its parts at least, do you think it's okay?

and it is better for animals to live a happy life even though they will end up dying. i read on PETA that KFC abused their chickens, which saddened me and I did a speech on it in SS class last, last year. They should be treated well, no matter what.

there is this park with potbelly pigs. there are houses in the fenced area for them and mud but no water, which my mom says they need to keep cool. is that bad-no water in the mud for them to roll around in?

and are circuses cruel?

also, what is your stanceo n keeping pets?

I do not think it's right to use any parts of an animal. it's more respectful to do it that way, but no company does.

all animals that end on your plate have in some way been abused at one point or another. I'm for the minimalization of that abuse.

they should have water. at least they have room and mud. factory farmers don't give pigs any room to do anything.

I don't like circuses. zoos are better in most cases. it's case by case, though.

I don't have pets. I have two extra-furry family members. house animals are the greatest link between humans and compassion for animals. I think in most cases dogs and cats are the human ambassadors to the animal world.

about being a vegan, that means not using or eating animal/animal-related products, right? how do you know your products dont contain umm animal stuff if like you're not sure if a toy you buy.. well i guess itll be made of plastic so..but like in any instance where youre not sure? and if you dont know if animal labor went into making the product. sorry im in a hurry and cant type right now thanks

do you know the levels of vegetarianism? iread somehwere then forgot..octo-something

I generally don't buy food if it's not grown fresh locally. I don't buy from businesses that aren't completely vegan-friendly. if I'm not sure I won't buy it or I'll write the company. I do wear leather and silk if bought second-hand. I'll also wear wool if it's from farms outside of austrailia that don't practice mulesing. I also own one pair of leather shoes that I bought new, but a non-leather counterpart doesn't exist and it's a one-time purchase that will last me ten years. they're tap/character shoes that I use very seldom and only for performances.

lacto-ovo vegetarians drink milk and eat eggs and dairy.
vegans live to the greatest extent possible to protect animals.
strict vegetarians are vegans who aren't activists or vegans for dietary purposes.
flexitarians are shitheads who eat meat once in a while.
those are the big ones, wikipedia the rest.

I'm 16, 5'3" and weigh 152 pounds. I just moved to a new state and am going back to visit my friends in 2 months. I'd like to drop 20-30 pounds before I go back, and also slim down my thighs and butt. I'm a vegetarian, I don't eat fast food, and I don't drink soda. But with 6 AP classes and a job it's hard to eat right most of the time. I barely even have time to workout but I do what I can at night and on the weekends. Is there anyway that I can drop the weight?

don't just eat celery. ever. that is not a good plan.

it sounds to me like you're a junk food vegetarian. the key to a healthy diet (and weight maintenence) for a vegetarian (or a vegan) is vegetable variety. if you eat a lot of cheese and chocolates, cut down on them and eat a lot of hearty bean soups and tomato-based soups. a lot of milk and cheese isn't good for you if you don't have the time to work off the fat they contain. go for vegetables and plenty of variety in them. it really depends on what your diet is like now. there are many types of vegetarians. my choir teacher is a vegetarian and eats lots of cookies and cheese. he has a belly accordingly. I, however, am a vegan and I eat mainly beans and rices and various seasonal vegetables. I'm not by any means fit, but I'm healthy.

killing animals, then skinning them for furs/coats/jackets etc. is wrong. is it still considered wrong if you keep the animal until it grows old and dies and then you skin the animal to make a new jacket/coat/etc. ? i'm really curious.

fur and leather in general is unneccesary. there's no reason for it other than style. also, it's unneccesarily cruel towards animals. even old ones. such a utopia you created in your question where the animal lives a long and happy life doesn't happen in real life. in real life most leather comes as a by-product of the dairy industry. new-born male cows are routinely slaughtered for veal just days after birth. their skin is used for leather because it is the freshest available. old leather from cows that can no longer produce milk can only be used to create suede which is demanded in smaller quantities. and these cows do not die naturally.

I want to get started in animal activism and PETA isn't the right way to start, correct? Can someone point me in the right direction?

If someone would give me names of books for other activism things that would be cool as well.

are you a vegan? if not, then you probably should be. animal rights starts with the individual. as a vegan myself, I listen to the vegan freaks podcast (www.podcast.veganfreaks.com). they generally have interviews with big names in the animal rights movement which can help you become more aware of the suffering of animals. as well, they occasionally address teens wishing to help animals and talk with a lot of organizations.

what is a great smoothie recipe? i want a healthy lean slenderizing smoothie. if you have any great recipes, do tell. thanks

I don't know a thing about smoothies, but I have tried almost every available soymilk on the market. a good soymilk depends on your needs and personal tastes. my favorite is silk's low-fat plain soymilk fortified for vegans. I am a vegan. it has my B vitamins. I like the slightly nutty taste of most soymilks, not the covered-over vanilla.

try getting a few from the store made by different brands in different flavors (plain, vanilla, very vanilla, etc.) and testing them out.

soymilk fun factz:

soymilk doesn't come from cows. it comes from soybeans grown from the ground. because it doesn't come from cows drinking it or cooking with it doesn't harm any animals. it also doesn't contain fun things like casein (which is addictive and has morphine-like addictive properties) and puss from the udders of cows that have mastitus from improper care. the legal limit for puss in cows' milk is 200 parts per million. even organic milks contain well over 400 parts per million in most cases. you'd be hard-pressed to find puss-free milk. I'm a huge advocate for soymilk and the utilization of soybeans in general. I like to leave milk to the baby cows because really, I can do without all that puss.

ok so ya kno tha lil cosmetic sponge thingies you put on liquid foundation with ?? ya so like how often should you use one before you throw it out & use a new one ?? thx.

it depends on how clean you want to be (which translates to how clean you want your face and how much acne you want to have). you CAN use the same one for 3 weeks until it starts to crumble apart like tofu, but it's probably not good. if it sits covered in make-up it's a breeding ground for the bacteria you do not want on your face that you probably clean off. so you end up washing your face more often to be safe and getting dry skin which causes you to put on more foundation.

etc.

to be safe, change sponges every single day or every other day or use your hands to apply make-up. you'll be better off in the long run.
