I have recently found a cat and her three kittens living under my neighbors shed. Me and my friends have been feeding them cheese and tuna, but we are running low on that. So I was wondering what other things cats likes to eat other than tuna and meat, is there any type of bread they'll like or vegetable. Anything would work..Also the kittens do approach me but everytime I try to pet them they run away but the mother isnt afraid how do I get them to allow me to pet them?

& Depending on how old they are, if they're newborn, or somewhat newborn, they need to be getting their mothers milk They can get picky if you start giving them human food, rather than their mothers milk or cat food. In my opinion I wouldn't give kittens any dry cat food...& if you're to give them the "wet-soft" kind, add a little bit of water to it.
Also, milk isn't really good for cats, not to mention some can be lactose intolerant.
About the petting situation, slowly reach out to pet them, they may still run off the first couple of tries. Sudden movements scare them. [ Suphunn's advice column | Ask Suphunn A Question ]
Jodieee answered Saturday August 26 2006, 3:02 am: You cant feed kittens alot of cheese and tuna.
Or dry cat food, it will hurt their stomachs..wait til they are a bit older..or you can get some type of dry cat food that was made special for kittens.
Really small kittens need their mothers milk.
And older cats quite enjoy any cat food..lol
Cats will get sick if all you give them is tuna and cheese, you need to give them some cat food, either the dry or wet stuff will do fine.
The mother will probably catch a bird or mouse too, the basic instinct will probably kick in.
Just try every day to pick up the kittens, lure them out with food and try and pet them, be slow though, they dont like fast movements.
I've never heard of anyone getting any deadly diseases from petting a cat..maybe from them scratching you with dirty claws, but even thats rare to get a disease from their claws.
Just be careful, if they cut you deep maybe go the hospital for a tetnis shot..I've handled many farm kittens and i've never gotten a disease from them scratching me.
If you think you want to keep the mother, then thats good..get her spayed and checked out, and try and give away the kittens to good homes.
Even though you probably want to keep the cute little kittens..they do grow up and they will breed with each other..even though it is inbred they will do it and you will have more kittens to deal with.
So try your hardest to give them away..you can probably get away with keeping one or 2 without MUCH hassle but i would get them spayed/neutered too. But that gets costly.

godslildevil777 answered Friday August 25 2006, 5:02 pm: Well if they are really little kittens you don't want to pick them up because they will make them sick (i've had like, 5 liters of kittens born in my house) You should probably call animal control or the humane society so that they can get the care they need so they don't get sick and/or die. and cat food would be sufficient to eat till then. i'm not sure what else they eat i just know they like meat.. a lot lol [ godslildevil777's advice column | Ask godslildevil777 A Question ]
Nallie answered Thursday August 24 2006, 11:10 pm: Cats are carnivores, meaning their main diet is composed of meat. If they are hungry enough they may eat bread, but I doubt if they will eat any veggies. If you don't plan to find homes for the kittens and the mama, you should call animal control who can help do that. You will be doing them a favor because they need their shots and to be checked out by a vet. If the Mother appears healthy, most likely the kittens are healthy too, but once the immunities from the Mother wear off they can get sick. When you feed them, just sit by quietly and watch, that way they associate the presence of a human with food--which is a good thing. Eventually you may be able to get them to come closer and take the food when it is by you. Eventually they may take it from your hand. [ Nallie's advice column | Ask Nallie A Question ]

fairygodmother92 answered Wednesday August 23 2006, 1:09 am: well... first off i would like to tell you that you shouldn't pet the kittens or cats because they could be carrying any sort or spreadable disease.. well i would very much recomend you get some soy milk...they like fish... and um...for the kittens don't give them hard cat food because thats not good for them...until they come of a reasonable age like 1or 2 month if you have anymore questions then write me back...
malibubarbiie111 answered Wednesday August 23 2006, 12:00 am: haha -- it really depends on the cat. one of my cats eats things the other one won't. so, just try different things until you find what they like. i suggest anything fish. you can go to the store and get cheap kitten food. -- the kittens are just scared. sit there with them, and don't make sudden movements. they will eventually come up to you, and let you pet them when they get used to you [just like any other animal] [ malibubarbiie111's advice column | Ask malibubarbiie111 A Question ]
Moop answered Tuesday August 22 2006, 11:59 pm: you cannot feed them milk. ever. and it's probably safe to just let them be because the mother will feed them. [ Moop's advice column | Ask Moop A Question ]
xEVYx answered Tuesday August 22 2006, 10:51 pm: Aww i love kittys! I had a kitty a while back and whenever I would eat olives she would always try to get them, so you could try cutting up some of those for em. Or depending how old they are, just plain milk would be fine if you can spare it.
When you try to pet them, hold your hand out to where your palm is facing upwards, that way they don't think you're trying to hurt them or anything. It works with dogs so I don't see why it wouldn't with kittys.
