Foods.

Question Posted Saturday August 19 2006, 1:47 pm

Are there any foods that are impossible to get food poisonign from, and foods that are really hard to get it from? If you could list them in two different categories that would be great. :]
Thanks!

You can get food poisening from any food that is contaminated, that's why everything has to either be washed completely or cooked completely through. Even then there are still risks, but our body is designed to kill bacteria in the stomach. Sometimes the bacteria is just too strong though, so be careful and safe.

"if you never cook with or eat meat or dairy or eggs, you will probably never get food poisoning. yet another reason to be vegan."

This is wrong. It is possible to get salmonella from unwashed salads and other vegetables if not washed/prepared properly.

It is possible to get food poisoning from any food, either directly or indirectly.
Directly would be due to things like being past the expiration date, not cooked properly, not refrigerated at the correct temperature, defrosting and freezing again etc. Indirectly would be through cross contamination, so a food that would not normally be associated with food poisoning, eg fruit or vegetables, coming into contact with a contaminant like uncooked chicken.
If you want to avoid getting food poisoning, always ensure that you wash your hands before touching food, after touching raw meat and before touching anything else, it is also a good idea to have separate (and different coloured) chopping boards for raw meat, and food that does not need to be cooked. Always check expiry dates, ensure food is cooked correctly and hot all the way through, no blood visible in 'danger' meats, like chicken or pork, keep raw meat on the lower shelves of a fridge and cooked meats above, NEVER the other way round. Make sure the fridge is at the correct temperature. Never allow something to defrost and then refreeze, particularly important with meat, fish and icecream. Never defrost, cook, then refreeze, then reheat anything. Always follow manufacturers guide lines for cooking food. Wash fruit and vegetables before eating them, particularly salad items.
If you go abroad, always follow the health and safety advice for that country.
Hope that helps.

there are no foods that are impossible to get food poisoning from, except for water, but that has to be purified.

foods that are easy to get food poisoning from are basically foods that have short expiration dates, like best used before a weeks over. also foods that are refrigerated are likely to give you food poisoning.

foods that are really hard to get food poisoning from are ones with late expiration dates, like one that might say 2007 (as of now)

if you avoid meats and dairy you have a much smaller chance of getting food poisoning. veggies are safe to eat at any temperature while meats and dairy have to be thoroughly cooked and kept at a constant temperature that's safe for them.

if you never cook with or eat meat or dairy or eggs, you will probably never get food poisoning. yet another reason to be vegan.
